News, Notes and Game Recaps from June 3

Iowa made it seven in a row as Willson Contreras slugged a three-run homer in the win. Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend all lost.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 7, Oklahoma City 5

Iowa (26-26) made it seven straight and completed the sweep at Oklahoma City (26-26). 

Hitting Recap: C Willson Contreras (.335) smacked his ninth homer, a three-run shot in the 6th that gave Iowa a 3-0 lead. CF Juan Perez (.259) had the big hit in the 8th, a two-run double that gave Iowa the lead for good. Arismendy Alcantara was 2-for-4 with a RBI double and RF Albert Almora (.320) finished 2-for-3.

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny tossed five shutout innings but ran into problems in the 6th, getting charged with three runs. The left-hander fanned five and allowed seven hits in the 85-pitch outing. Giovanni Soto got charged with a blown save, allowing two inherited runner and another un to score in the sixth. Dallas Beeler made his season debut and got the win, allowing a run on a hit in two innings. Jean Machi recorded his first save with a scoreless 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa hosts Memphis on Friday night and no starter had been named.

Southern League—AA—Jackson 2, Tennessee 1

The Smokies dropped their fourth straight to the Generals.

Hitting Recap: Smokies only run scored in the 4th when CF Jacob Hannemann (.248) doubled and eventually scored on a throwing error by the first baseman. C Cael Brockmeyer was 2-for-3 in his second start behind the plate and Mark Zagunis (.310) added a double. 

Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina (2-3, 3.88 ERA) only allowed two hits over four innings but six walks cut his night short. He fanned three and threw 77 pitches, only 38 for strikes. Starling Peralta blanked the Generals for three innings while David Garner (3 K) and Corey Black each threw a scoreless frame. 

Smokies News: Brad Markey will be looking to end the Smokies skid when he toes the rubber Friday night against Jackson. 

Carolina League—High A—Salem 11, Myrtle Beach 10

Myrtle Beach blew an 8-2 lead and lost to first-place Salem for the third straight game. 

Hitting Recap: 3B Jason Vosler (.283) went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI while C Gioskar Amaya (.222) had three hits and knocked in three runs. SS Gleyber Torres (.265) had three doubles, scored three times and knocked one in. 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.232) scored three times and 2B Ian Happ (.269) finished 1-for-5 with a RBI. 

Pitching Chart: Jonathan Martinez surrendered two runs over the first four frames but never made it out of the 5th, ending the night with a line of 4.2 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. Daury Torrez (0-1, 4.21 ERA) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over two innings. Jordan Minch worked 1.1 scoreless frames, giving up a hit and a walk.

Pelicans News: The Pelicans return home on Friday night and send Zach Hedges (4-4, 2.35 ERA) to the mound against Potomac. 

Midwest League—Low A—West Michigan 2, South Bend 1

South Bend (31-22) dropped their fourth straight and fell behind West Michigan (32-19) by two games. 

Hitting Recap: Cubs only had one hit over the first six innings against right-hander Beau Burrows. They scored a run in the 7th when CF Donnie Dewees (.276) doubled and scored in a single from C Ian Rice (.391). South Bend loaded the bases in the 8th but Dewees hit into a double play to end the inning, 

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (4-3, 3.61 ERA) tossed six strong innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits. He fanned four and threw 77 pitches, 54 for strikes. Kyle Miller gave up a run in the 7th for the first time in seven appearances, working two innings. Greyfer Eregua retired all three 

SB-Cubs News: Cubs and West Michigan play a twin-bill on Saturday night with Carson Sands (5-0, 2.91 ERA) and Casey Bloomquist (3-2. 2.95 ERA) getting the start. It will be Bloomquist’s first start of the year after 14 relief appearances.
