News, Notes and Game Recaps from June 9

On the field, South Bend remained in first with a win over Dayton and off the field there were trades, signings, and a flurry of roster moves.

Shawon Dunston traded

The Chicago Cubs have traded Myrtle Beach outfielder Shawon Dunston to the San Francisco Giants for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The 23-year-old was the Cubs 11th round pick in 2011 and played five seasons with the Cubs, reaching High A Myrtle Beach. He hit .262/.324/.372 in over 1,000 plate appearances with the organization. He joins his dad with the Giants.

Cubs sign Joel Peralta

The Cubs have signed 40-year-old relief pitcher Joel Peralta to a minor league deal. The 12-year veteran was recently released by the Mariners, where he went 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 26 games this year for the M’s. Peralta has pitched with the Angels, Royals, Rockies, Nationals, Dodgers, M’s and led the AL with 80 appearances for the Rays in 2013.

Roster Moves

Been a hectic couple of days. Here’s a breakdown of all the latest transactions. 3B Jeimer Candelario, OF Mark Zagunis, RPH Corey Black, and RHP Miguel Mejia have all been assigned to Iowa from Tennessee. Iowa’s Albert Almora was promoted to Chicago and Iowa IF David Bote was sent to Myrtle Beach. OF Trey Martin and 2B Daniel Lockhart have been promoted to Tennessee from Myrtle Beach. Jen-Ho Tseng has been activated off the Tennessee DL and RHP Nick Sarianides has been assigned to Tennessee from extended spring training. 2B Andrew Ely was promoted from South Bend to Myrtle Beach and IF Sutton Whiting was activated from the DL for South Bend. 

Pacific Coast League—AAA— Round Rock (Rangers) 8, Iowa 5

Cubs (29-28) were never able to overcome the three-run first and fell to Round Rock in the opener.

Hitting Recap: 3B Jeimer Candelario ripped a pari of double and scored twice in his AAA debut for Iowa. 1B Kris Negron doubled, tripled and knocked in three runs. RF Mark Zagunis went 1-for-5 with a strikeout in his AAA debut. CF Juan Perez was 2-for-4 with a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny went 5.2 innings, throwing 96 pitches, 56 for strikes. He allowed five runs on five hits and three walks and fanned six. Game score 42. Gerardo Concepcion worked 1.1 scoreless frames and Dallas Beeler followed that up with a scoreless 8th.  Carl Edwards, Jr. allowed three runs in the 9th and Miguel Mejia had to come in and get the final out.

I-Cubs Notes: The I-Cubs have not named a stater for Friday night......Iowa has released right-handed relievers Brandon Gomes and Jean Machi and relievers Corey Black and Miguel Mejia have been promoted from AA Tennessee. 

Southern League—AA—Mississippi (Braves) 3, Tennessee 0

A three-run homer in the bottom of the 11th gave the Braves the walk-off win.

Hitting Recap: C Victor Caratini had three singles as the Smokies only collected six hits in the loss. RF Billy McKinney double  in four trips and 2B Daniel Lockhart went 1-for-4 with a double in his AA debut.

Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng was activated from the DL and got the start on Thursday night. The right-hander left his May 2 start in the third inning with a shoulder injury and has spent the last month in Mesa rehabbing the injury.  Tseng tossed five shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk while fanning five. He threw 59 pitches in his return, 34 for strikes, and had a game score of 67. Juan Paniagua (1 IP), David Garner (2 IP), and James Farris (2 IP) all kept the Braves off the board. Nick Sarianides only got one out in the 11th as he walked two and gave up the walk-off homer in his Cubs debut. 

Smokies News: Brad Markey (5-1, 2.41 ERA) makes his 11th start as Tennessee hosts Chattanooga on Friday night.......The Southern League has announced that right-hander reliever Juan Paniagua has been named to the North Division roster for the all-star game. The 26-year-old is 2-2 and sports a 1.09 ERA and two saves in 18 relief appearances. Paniagua fanned 24 batters in 24.2 innings and, the Dominican native has the fifth-lowest opponent batting average among Southern League relievers (.170). Paniagua was signed by the Chicago Cubs as a non-drafted free agent on July 9, 2012. 

Carolina League—High A—Lynchburg (Indians) 9, Myrtle Beach 3

The Hillcats pounded Pelicans pitching for 13 hits and took the opener. 

Hitting Recap: SS Gleyber Torres smacked his 7th homer, a two-run shot in the 8th, and finished 1-for-3 with a walk. RF Jeffrey Baez doubled and scored while C Gioskar Amaya was on base three times with a pair of walks and a double.

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, one leaving the yard. He fanned six in the 94-pitch outing and had a game score of 48. Daury Torrez got tagged for four runs in the 7th and Dillon Maples allowed an unearned run in the 7th. Daniel Lewis got charged with a run in the 8th.

Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (3-3, 4.66 ERA) gets the ball on Friday night in Lynchburg.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Dayton (Reds) 2

South Bend (36-23) scored three times in the bottom of the 8th to take the series from the Dragons (15-45) and remain in first.

Hitting Recap: With the score tied at 2-2 in the 8th, CF Donnie Dewees ripped his MWL leading 11th triple and scored on a single from LF Eloy Jimenez. Two wild pitches and a passed ball allowed Jimenez to score, and RF Eddy Martinez capped off the frames with a RBI double. Dewees finished 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk while 1B Tyler Alamo added a sacrifice fly in the 4th. Jimenez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. 

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg tossed seven solid innings, his career-high, allowing two runs on five hits. He fanned five, didn’t walk a hitter, and got 10 ground ball outs in the efficient 78-pitch outing. Scott Effross (4-0, 3.08 ERA) got the win, pitching around two hits and walk the final two frames. 

SB-Cubs News: Cubs head to Bowling Green on Friday night and send Preston Morrison (4-3, 3.61 ERA) to the mound.

Dominican Summer League— Pirates 1 (6), Cubs 1 (3) 

Cubs (0-5) dropped their fifth straight to open the season.

Hitting Recap: SS Orian Nunez cracked his first pro homer, a solo shot, and finished 2-for-4. DH Herson Perez had two hits, walked twice and knocked in a run. 

Pitching Chart: Yunior Perez made his pro debut and allowed three runs on two hits and a walk over 4.1 innings. He fanned three and had a game score of 51. Freddy Tineo, a position player last year, made his debut on the mound and allowed two runs in two innings on four hits and three walks. Aneuris Rosario allowing a run over the final 2.1 frames. 

Cubs Notes: Cubs have a rematch with the Pirates on Friday.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (4), Rojos (3)

Fidel Mejia’s walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th gave the Cubs  the win. 

Hitting Recap: With the game tied in the 9th, Henrry Pedra was hit by a pitch and Fernando Kelli reached on an error and Pedra went to third. A walk loaded the bases and Fidel Mejia singled to center to score Pedra. It was Mejia’s second hit and his third RBI of the day. Pedra finished 2-for-2 and scored three times. Luis Diaz was 2-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Andres Bonalde made his first start and allowed a run over four innings. He coaxed seven ground ball outs and fanned four for a game score of 59. Omar Ventura gave up two runs (one earned) in 2.1 frames. Fauris Guerrero got the win, fanning four in 2.2 scoreless innings.

Cubs Notes: Cubs face the Rojos (Reds) on Friday.
