Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock 11, Iowa 4
Round Rock (32-27) pounded Iowa (29-29) pitching for 17 hits.
Hitting Recap: Any problems with C Willson Contreras (.349) were put to rest as he went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Contreras left the June 6 game and missed another game but is 4-for-8 in the series. DH Matt Murton was 1-for-4 with a double and a RBI.
Pitching Chart: The Express didn’t care that Jake Buchanan was the PCL Pitcher of the Week as they greeted the right hander with a five-run first. He allowed seven runs on 12 hits over four innings, including a pair of homers. Giovanni Soto gave up two runs in 1.2 frames while Felix Pena surrounded two runs in 1.1 innings. Corey Black worked a 1-2-3 8th in his AAA debut and Spencer Patton fanned the side in the 9th.
I-Cubs Notes: Aaron Brooks will make his Iowa and organization debut on Saturday night at Principal Park. Brooks, a member of the Cubs 40-man roster, was acquired from the A’s for Chris Coghlan and started the season on the DL.
Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Twins) 6, Tennessee 2
The Lookouts (31-30) made the most of their six hits and took the series opener over the Smokies (26-35).
Hitting Recap: RF Billy McKinney (.251) went 2-for-4 with a RBI double in the first. McKinney got off to a slow start, hitting .206 in April, but continues to bring his average up. 3B Daniel Lockhart (.286) went 1-for-3 and knocked in his first AA run in the 9th. C Benjamin Carhart (.237) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Pitching Chart: Brad Markey (5-2, 2.33 ERA) worked six innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks. He threw 86 pitches and had a game score of 58. Stephen Perakslis surrendered four runs in two innings and David Berg worked a 1-2-3 9th.
Smokies News: Duane Underwood (0-3, 5.30 ERA) will be seeking his first AA win on Saturday night against the Lookouts.
Carolina League—High A—Lynchburg (Indians) 7, Myrtle Beach 1
Lynchburg (39-21) scored early and often and beat Myrtle Beach (32-28) for the second straight night.
Hitting Recap: Pelicans only run scored in the sixth on a RBI single from RF Jeffrey Baez (.242), who finished 2-for-4. CF Rashad Crawford (.263) and C Erick Castillo (.211) both had two hits as the Pelicans were held to six hits.
Pitching Chart: Tough outing for Jonathan Martinez (3-4, 5.08 ERA) as the right-hander only lasted four innings, allowing six runs on six hits (three for extra bases) and three walks. James Pugliese allowed a run over three innings in his first action since May 25. Jordan Minch pitched a scoreless 8th.
Pelicans News: With Shawon Dunston being traded to San Francisco, South Bend’s Daniel Spingola was promoted to the Carolina League. Spingola hit .309/.377/.368 in 38 games with South Bend. The Georgia Tech product was actually drafted by the Cubs twice; in the 24th round of the 2014 draft and then in the 31st round in 2015. Following signing with Chicago in 2015, Spingola played in 12 games between Rookie-level Mesa, Short Season Class A Eugene and Low-A South Bend, hitting .314/.375/.543. He was a Second Team All-ACC honoree at Georgia Tech in 2014.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 6, Bowling Green Rays) 4
South Bend (37-23) grabbed a 5-0 lead and hung on to remain in first.
Hitting Recap: RF Eddy Martinez had a career-high three hits to lead South Bend’s 12-hit attack. Eloy Jimenez doubled home two runs while 2B Carlos Sepulveda scored three times with two hits and walk. 1B Tyler Alamo went 2-for-3 with a RBI and DH P.J. Higgins had two hits.
Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (5-3, 3.76 ERA) tossed five shutout innings but the Hot Rods chased the right-hander in the 6th. Morrison finished with a line of 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K in the 83-pitch outing for a game score of 46. Kyle Twomey got the Cubs out of the jam in the 6th and fanned three in his inning of work. Craig Brooks tossed 1.2 scoreless frames and James Norwood earned his fifth save despite allowing a run in the 9th.
SB-Cubs News: The Cubs have sent 1B/3B Matt Rose back to extended spring training in Mesa. In 38 games, the Cubs 11th round pick last June was hitting .178/.252/.304 with 5 HR and 18 RBI......OF Daniel Spingola was promoted to Myrtle Beach and OF Roberto Caro was sent to South Bend from extended spring training
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (4), Pirates (3)
Jose Jules sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth gave the Cubs their first win of the season.
Hitting Recap: With the game tied 3-3, Henderson Perez (.067) singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Moises Colasante, who promptly swiped second. A wild pitch moved him to third and Colasante scored the winning run on a fly ball to center by LF Jose Jules (.182). RF Jonathan Sierra (.150) was on base three times with two hits and a walk, scoring twice. DH Samir Lara (.222) went 1-for-3 with a RBI. 3B Yonathan Perlaza (.304) singled, waked and scored.
Pitching Chart: Brailyn Marquez made his pro debut and fanned three over four innings. The left-hander got charged with two runs on three hits and three walks while coaxing seven ground ball outs. Moises Ramirez gave up a run over three farms and Elvis Diaz got the win, fanning two in two shutout innings.
Cubs Notes: Cubs 1 battle the Indians (2-3) on Saturday.
Dominican Summer League—Rojos (12), Cubs 2 (9)
Cubs (3-3) came out on the short end of a slugfest with the Reds (1-5) affiliate.
Hitting Recap: 2B Luis Diaz (.286) had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. RF Tony Rijo (.400) ripped a pair of doubles, part of his three his day. 3B Fidel Mejia (.524) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while CF Yovanny Cuevas (.235) had three hits, two doubles, and scored twice. SS Aramis Ademan was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Cubs had 15 hits, walked four times and went 4-for-19 with RISP.
Pitching Chart: Emilio Ferrebus took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks in 3.1 innings. Roberto Severino gave up three runs in 1.1 frames, Sucre Valdez surrendered four runs in the sixth, and Yan De La Cruz got charged with a run over the final 2.1 innings.
Cubs Notes: Cubs face the Orioles 2 (2-4) on Saturday.
