News, Notes and Game Recaps from June 11

Zach Hedges pitched Myrtle Beach to a victory but it was a rough night for the rest of the affiliates. Both DSL teams posted victories.

Pacific Coast League—AAA— Round Rock (Rangers) 14, Iowa 9

Round Rock smacked three homers and beat Iowa in a slugfest. 

Hitting Recap: LF Mark Zagunis had his best game at the palet since joining Iowa, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two knocked in. Willson Contreras had two hits while Matt Murton and David Freitas had 2 RBI each.  CF John Andreoli ripped a base-loaded triple and finished 1-for-4 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Aaron Brooks made his Cubs debut and threw 57 pitches in his rehab stint. The right-hander allowed four runs on three walks and four hits, one a homer. Alex Sanabia surrendered a pair of homer and got charged with eight runs in four innings. Armando Rivero fanned the side in the 8th but surrendered a pair of runs in the 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: Drew Rucinski (4-5, 5.35 ERA) takes the mound on Sunday at Principal Park....OF Alex Bautista has been assigned to Iowa form extended spring training.  Bautista was drafted by the Cubs in the 22nd round of the 2015 draft out of Lindsey Wilson College. Last year, Bautista split time between Mesa and Eugene, hitting .255 between the two levels with seven doubles, two triples, three homers and 21 RBI.

Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Lookouts) 8, Tennessee 1

Lookouts (32-30) pitching blanked the Smokies (26-36) for the first eight innings to win for the second straight night.

Hitting Recap: Smokies only run of the night came in the 9th on a sacrifice fly off the bat of C Victor Caratini (.293). CF Jacob Hannemann (.236) walked, took second on a single from 2B Chesny Young (.293), moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on the fly ball. RF Billy McKinney (.257) and Young both had two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood (0-4, 5.40 ERA) gave up 10 hits and the Lookouts scored four times off the right-hander in his ninth start. Underwood threw 97 pitches, 67 for strikes, walked one and fanned six. Game score 41. Starling Peralta gave up four runs in the 7th on three hits and two walks. Nick Sarianides and Jose Rosario both tossed a scoreless frame. 

Smokies News: Paul Blackburn (3-2, 2.40 ERA) makes the start on Sunday against the Lookouts....RHP Tyler Skulina has been added to the all-star game roster for the North Division. The 24-year-old has posted 3-3 record and a 3.59 ERA (25 ER in 62.2 IP) in 12 starts. The Ohio native has struck out 44 batters in 62.2 innings this season.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 2, Lynchburg (Indians) 1

Zach Hedges pitched into the 8th and a Hillcats’ error gave the Pelicans the win.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans made the most of their five hits.  C Gioskar Amaya hit his second homer in the 3rd and finished 2-for-4. Jason Vosler doubled and scored in the 7th when the first baseman missed a throw to first from the pitcher. Jeffrey Baez doubled and Yasiel Balaguert singled. Daniel Spingola went 0-for-3 with a walk in his Carolina League debut.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges worked a season-high 7.2 innings, holding the Hillcats to one run on five hits and a walk. He fanned four, recorded 12 ground ball outs and threw 82 pitches, 52 for strikes. Game score 68. Tommy Thorpe got the final out of the 8th and the first two of the 9th. Ryan McNeil retired the only hitter he faced for his 4th save.

Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (4-3, 2.08 ERA) gets the start Sunday afternoon at Lynchburg.

Midwest League—Low A—Bowling Green (Rays) 7, South Bend 4

South Bend (37-24) scored four times in the first but couldn’t stop the Hot Rods (30-31).

Hitting Recap: DH Donnie Dewees (.276) opened the scoring with a RBI single and LF Eloy Jimenez (.322) followed with a a two-run single to left. 1B Tyler Alamo (.294) plated the 4th run with a sacrifice fly. Jimenez added a double in the 9th but left the game when he slid awkwardly into second. He left under his own power. CF Roberto Caro was 1-for-2 with a walk in his MWL debut. 

Pitching Chart: Casey Bloomquist went four innings but an error in the second led to four unearned runs. He gave up four hits, walked one, and matched his season-high with seven strikeouts. Bloomquist threw 72 pitches and had a game score of 48. John Williamson surrendered two runs over two innings and Pedro Araujo blanked the Hot Rods for the final two frames, extended his scoreless streak to 13 innings.

SB-Cubs News: Carson Sands (50, 3.30 ERA) gets the start on Sunday night at Bowling Green.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (3), Indians(0)

Four Cubs pitcher blanked the Indians on three hits, two coming in the 9th. 

Hitting Recap: RF Jonathan Sierra (.182), 1B Luis Hidalgo (.125) and DH Herson Perez (.500) all knocked in runs. Perez had two hits and all six Cubs hits were singles. They were caught stealing four times. 

Pitching Chart: Pablo Ochoa got the start but only threw one inning, issuing a walk. Edison Novas fanned three over four shutout frames and earned the win. Miguel Estevez tossed three no-hit innings and Juan Rengifo earned his first save, allowing two hits in a scoreless 9th. 

Cubs Notes: Cubs and the rest of the DSL have Sunday off. 

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (8), Orioles 2 (5)

Cubs used a five-run 7th to rally past the Orioles.

Hitting Recap: Cubs tallied five runs in the 7th. 1B Abraham Rodriguez (.174) knocked in the first run with a single and DH Tony Rijo (.357) and C Daniel Diaz (.250) followed with two-run singles. LF Yovanny Cuevas (.318) went 3-for-5 while SS Aramis Ademan (.261) was 2-for-4 with a RBI. 

Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia got the start and allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks. Deibi Torres kept the O’s off the board for 1.1 frames of relief. Ivan Medina (2-0, 0.00 ERA) got the win twirling three shutout innings of one-hit relief, allowing a hit and two walks.

Cubs Notes: Cubs and the rest of the DSL have Sunday off.
