Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa, Colorado Spring (Brewers)
Game was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader on Tuesday. Pierce Johnson (0-2, 5.17 ERA) and Rob Zastryzny (1-1, 5.09 ERA) are scheduled to start the twin-bill. Johnson was activated from the DL on Monday and has been sidelined since May 5 with a lat strain. The Cubs assigned RHP Joel Peralta to Iowa and RHP Alex Sanabia was released.
Southern League—AA— Chattanooga (Twins) 4, Tennessee 2
Chattanooga beat the Smokies for the third time in four games.
Hitting Recap: Smokies only runs came in the third on a two-run homer by CF Jacob Hannemann (.241), his 7th of the season. Hannemann added a double. LF Bijan Rademacher (.275) doubled and walked as the Smokies were held to five hits.
Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina surrendered two homers and took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings. He fanned six and had a game score of 50. David Garner gave up a run over two frames and James Farris tossed a scoreless 9th.
Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng (1-2, 4.07 ERA) makes his second start since coming off the DL.
Carolina League—High A—Frederick (Orioles) 7, Myrtle Beach 3
Pelicans hit two homers but it wasn’t enough as the Keys scored in each of the first four innings, including a three-run 4th.
Hitting Recap: C Gioskar Amaya (.265) homered for the third straight game and now has five homers over his last six games. Amaya walked twice. DH Charcer Burks hit his 5th homer, a solo blast in the 7th, and finished 2-for-4. 2B Andrew Ely went 2-for-4 for his first hits in the Carolina League. LF Daniel Spingola added a sacrifice fly for his first RBI since joining the Pelicans.
Pitching Chart: Rough night for Erick Leal (8-3, 3.55 ERA) as the right hander surrendered six runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings. He allowed six hits, walked two, and threw 83 pitches for a game score of 32. James Pugliese turned his best outing of the year, tossing four no-hit innings. He walked one, fanned two and got seven ground ball outs.
Pelicans News: Jeremy Null (2-2, 2.45 ERA) gets the start Tuesday night against Frederick.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 6, Dayton (Reds) 1
Eddy Martinez had a career-high four hits to help South Bend remain in first place.
Hitting Recap: Adjustments at the plate made by RF Eddy Martinez are paying results. Using a leg kick and more of an open stance as the pitch is delivered, the Cuban delivered a career-high four hits on Monday night, besting his career-high three hits he set on June 10. Martinez is hitting .367 (11-30) over his last 10 games. All four of his hits were singles, scoring once and knocking in a run. DH Ian Rice (.327) had three hits and launched a solo homer in the first, his sixth. SS Josh Silver (.286) had two hits and knocked in a run while 1B P.J. Higgins (.281) added two hits and a RBI.
Pitching Chart: Making his second start, Kyle Miller (1-1, 1.36 ERA) tossed a career-high six innings, surrendering an unearned run on four hits and a walk. The right-hander fanned three and had the Dragons hitting the balls in the dirt with nine ground ball outs. He only needed 68 pitches, 46 for strikes, and had a game score of 64. Miller was the Cubs 19th round pick last June out of Florida Atlantic and stared the year at extended spring training in Mesa before joining the SB Cubs on April 26. He made 11 appearances out of the bullpen before joining the rotation......LHP Kyle Twomey, moved to the bullpen after starting the year in the rotation, fanned six over three shutout innings for his first save.
SB-Cubs News: Adbert Alzolay (4-5, 3.92 ERA) gets the ball on Tuesday night against Dayton......LHP Tyler Peitzmeier was added to the South Bend roster and RHP James Norwood was placed on the DL. Peltzmeier was the Cubs 9th round pick last year and spent his first pro year between Mesa and Eugene. Norwood leads South Bend with five saves.....South Bend is one of the Top 10 merchandising teams in the minors per a release on Monday from the team.
Eugene’s season begins on Friday and the roster has yet to be announced but you can expect RHP Dylan Cease to headline the roster when its announced. A 6th round pick in 2014, Cease had Tommy John surgery after the draft and has been consistently in the upper 90s in Mesa this spring. Other notables likely headed to the Northwest League include LHP Bryan Hudson (3rd round-2015), and OF Darryl Wilson (4th round-2015) as well as international prospects 3B Wladimir Galindo, IF Yeiler Peguero, and P Pedro Silverio.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (9), Indians (2)
Cubs (3-5) used a six-run fifth to win their third straight.
Hitting Recap: Big day at the plate for Venezuelan Jose Gutierrez (.267) as the 17-year-old went 3-for-5 with a pair of triples and two runs knocked in. C Henderson Perez (.105), another 17-year-old Venezuelan, went 1-for-4 and knocked in two runs while 3B Jose Rojas (.278) had two hits, scored twice and plated a run.
Pitching Chart: Jesus Tejada (1-0, 1.80), 19, won his second start, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk in six innings. He fanned four, recorded eight ground ball outs and had a game score of 59. Freddy Tineo was perfect over two frames and Aneuris Rosario fanned the side in the 9th.
Cubs Notes: Cubs face Yankees 1 on Tuesday.
Dominican Summer League—Orioles 2 (3), Cubs 2 (2),
Orioles 2 walked off with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the 9th.
Pitching Chart: Alfredo Colorado made his second start and gave up two unearned runs over five innings. He gave up two hits and fanned four for a game score of 63. Fauris Guerrero (1-1, 0.96 ERA) blanked the Orioles for three innings and got the first two outs of the 9th but back-to-back doubles ended the game.
Cubs Notes: Cubs (4-4) battle the Twins on Tuesday. SS Yonathan Perlaza, the 17-year-old Venezuelan who received a $1 million bonus last summer, was hit by a pitch in the first and left the game in the top of the third of Saturday’s game. He didn’t play on Monday so hopefully he’s okay and won’t miss much time due to the HBP.
