Cubs sign Matusz to minor league deal
The Cubs continue to collect arms. On Tuesday they announced a minor league deal with 29-year-old Brian Matusz. If he reaches the majors, the left-hander will be used out of the bullpen like he did his final four years in Baltimore after starting his career as a starter. Matusz began the year on the DL with Baltimore with a left intercostal strain and after five rehab games in the minors, joined the O’s. He appeared in seven games for Baltimore (0-0, 12.00 ERA, 6 IP, 11 H, 7 BB, 1 K) before being traded to the Braves for two minor leaguers. Atlanta released Matusz on June 1. Making 68 starts during his eight years with the Orioles (279 G, 525.2 IP, 4.85 ERA, 1.451 WHIP), the former 1st round pick made his debut in 2009, his first of eight season. He throws a fastball in the low 90s, a slider and a change-up.
Cubs 7th round pick, Michael Cruz, a catcher from Bethune-Cookman, has reportedly signed for $75,000, well under the slot value of $186,000 for the 224th pick.

Cubs hit five homers in the night-cap to earn the split.
Hitting Recap: Game 1—C Willson Contreras (.354) extended his hit streak to 19 games, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and one knocked in. RF Mark Zagunis had two hits while 3B Jeimer Candelario, 1B Daniel Vogelbach, 2B Juan Perez and SS Munenori Kawasaki all collected RBI. . .....Game 2— CF John Andreoli (.219) led the offense with a pair of homers (8-9) and finished the night 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and 4 runs scored. Candelario (.273) smacked his first AAA homer and went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI. SS Logan Watkins (.231) was a homer shy of the cycle, going 4-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored. Vogelbach (.313) slugged his 11th homer, a two-run shot in the 1st. C David Freitas (.292) smacked a two-run homer and Zagunis (.375) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one knocked in. Contreras didn't play in game 2.
Pitching Chart: Game 1— Michael Wagner only lasted 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on fie hits and three walks. Corey Black retired all four hitters he faced, on eon strikes. Felix Pena allowed four runs in 1.1 innings, giving up six hits and a walk. Miguel Mejia got the final two outs......Game 2— Pierce Johnson (1-2, 5.23 ERA) saw his first action since May 2, throwing 79 pitches over five innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Joel Peralta made his Cubs debut with a scoreless 6th and Giovanni Soto allowed two runs in the 7th.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 4, Chattanooga (Twins) 1
Jen-Ho Tseng tossed six solid innings to help the Smokies salvage the final game of the series.
Hitting Recap: 2B Chesny Young (.296) went 3-for-4 and one of the hits plated a pair of runs in the 5th to give the Smokies a 2-1 lead. Jacob Hannemann (.241) hit his team-leading 8th homer in the 7th, a solo shot. 1B Cael Brockmeyer (.317) and RF Bijan Rademacher (.282) both went 2-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng (2-2, 3.56 ERA) had his best AA outing, allowing a run on five hits and a walk over six innings. He fanned two, recorded nine ground ball outs and only needed 76 pitches. Game score 59..... Stephen Perakslis worked a scoreless 7th and Jose Rosario earned his first save, recording the final six outs, one on strikes.

Carolina League—High A—Frederick (Orioles) 5, Myrtle Beach 4
Pelicans couldn’t overcome a 5-0 deficit and dropped their second straight to the Keys.
Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null (2-3, 3.41 ERA) yielded five runs as the Keys collected nine hits off the right-hander in five innings. Null fanned one and threw 90 pitches, 58 for strikes. Daury Torrez worked 2.1 shutout innings and Jordan Minch fanned two in 1.2 scoreless frames.
Pelicans News: Jake Stinnett (4-3, 4.24 ERA) gets the ball on Wednesday night in his 11th start. The 24-year-old has struggled in his last three outings, allowing 24 hits and 13 earned runs over 17.1 innings.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 7, Dayton (Reds) 2
South Bend moved a game closer to a playoff bid and a first-half title with a seven-run sixth to down Dayton.
Hitting Recap: A double by 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.318), a single from C P.J. Higgins (.284), a RBI double from DH Ian Rice (.321) and a RBI single from LF Eloy Jimenez (.326) opened the 6th and chased the starting pitcher. An error scored the next run and 1B Tyler Alamo (.275) added a sacrifice fly for the fourth run. A two-run single by Sepulveda and a wild pitch made it 7-2. Jimenez finished with three hits and RF Eddy Martinez (.243) was 1-for-3 with two walks.
Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay (5-3, 4.15 ERA) went seven solid innings, only allowing a two-run homer in the second. He gave up three hits and fanned five in the 78-pitch outing. Game score 68. John Williamson and Craig Brooks both tossed a scoreless frame.

The Chicago Cubs and the Eugene Emeralds have announced a two-year player development contract extension through 2018. The Cubs moved from Boise to Eugene in 2015.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (4), Yankees 1 (1)
Three Cubs pitchers held the Yankees to one run while the offense erupted for 11 hits.
Hitting Recap: DH Jose Gutierrez (.314) and CF Jose Jules (.278) both collected three hits to lead the offense. Cubs grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Gutierrez tripled home a pair of runs. Gutierrez scored on an error and the Cubs added another run in the 6th on a throwing error by the catcher with Jules at third. Cubs were thrown out all five times they attempted to steal.
Pitching Chart: Eury Ramos made his second start and went four innings, allowing a run on four hits and four walks. He fanned two and faced the first two hitters of the 5th. Jose Mac Donna stranded both inherited runners and tossed four shutout frames, recording four strikeouts in his first win. Elvis Diaz got the final three outs for his first save.
Cubs Notes: Yonathan Perlaza returned to the lineup on Tuesday after being hit by a pitch on Saturday and went 0-for-4. One of the Cubs top prospects signed last summer handled all five chances in the field without a miscue....The two teams play again on Wednesday.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (5), Twins (3)
Cubs (5-4) jumped out to a 5-0 lead and hung on for the win over the Twins (5-4)
Hitting Recap: C Miguel Amaya (.273), signed last summer out of Panama, smacked his first pro homer, a two-run shot in the 3rd the give Cubs a 5-0 lead. RF Luis Ubiera (.091) ripped a two-run double in the second and 3B Fidel Mejia (.464) added a RBI single. Mejia and Amaya both finished the game with two hits.
Pitching Chart: Mexico native Faustino Carrera won his first professional game as the 17-year-old left-hander fanned eight and allowed one unearned run over six innings. He gave up three hits, walked one and had a game score of 71. Omar Ventura threw two shutout innings and Jhon Romero allowed two unearned runs in the 9th.
