Jake Stinnett fired seven shutout innings and fanned seven one of his best outing since being selected second by the Cubs in 2014.

Draft Update

Early indications are several players drafted late by the Cubs will head to college. That list includes RHP Montana Parsons (30th round-Baylor), RHP Brenden Heiss (31st Round-Arkansas), RHP Davis Daniel (34th Round-Auburn), 3B Ryan Kreidler (35th Round-UCLA), SS Jake Slaughter (36th Round-LSU) and RHP D.J. Roberts (40th Round-South Florida) will all head to school this fall. 

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, Colorado Spring (Brewers) 5

Cubs pounded Sky Sox pithcing for 15 hits in the win.

Hitting Recap: Cf John Andreoli, RF Mark Zagunis, 3B Jeimer Candelario and 2B Logan Watkins all had three hits in the 15-hit attack. C Willson Contreras extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a RBI single in the first.  

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny (2-1, 5.14 ERA) only gave up three hits but lasted five innings as the lefty threw 95 pitchesHe walked five, got charged with three eared runs and recorded 12 ground ball outs. Game score 44. Armando Rivero gave up two hits in the 6th but fanned two and kept the Sky Sox off the board. RH Dallas Beeler surrendered two runs in the 7th. Carl Edwards, Jr. worked a scoreless 8th and Spencer Patton earned his 7th save, fanning two in the 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: Jake Buchanan (5-4, 5.02 ERA) gets the ball on Thursday night against the Sly Sox.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee @ Jackson

Wednesday night’s game at Jackson was rained out and will be made up as a twi-bill on Friday with first pitch at 6:05 EST. Brad Markey (5-2, 233 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night at Jackson.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 1, Frederick (Orioles) 0

Jake Stinnett fired seven shutout innings and Ryan McNeil finished off the Keys.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans scored the only run of the game on a wild pitch in the 4th. Yasiel Balaguert drew a one-out walks, advanced to second on a throwing error, took third on a walk, and scored on a wild pitch with Daniel Spingola batting. Rashad Crawford went 2-for-4 as Myrtle Beach only had five hits.

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett set a career-high with seven shutout innings and fanned seven in the 94-pitch gem. The right-hander allowed eight hits, walked two and recorded 10 ground ball outs. The game score of 66 was Stinnett’s 4th best of his career. Ryan McNeil is getting comfortable in the closer’s role. The 3rd round pick in 2012 notched his third straight save,  retiring all six hitters he faced. 

Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (3-4, 5.08 ERA) takes the mound Thursday night in Potomac.

Midwest League—Low A—Dayton (Reds) 3, South Bend 2

South Bend dropped the finale at Dayton but still hold a one-game lead over West Michigan with four games remaining in the first half.

Hitting Recap: Cubs were blanked the first five frames but got on the board in the 6th on Ian Rice’s 7th homer. Eddy Martinez ripped a double in the 8th to put runners on second and third. Jesse Hodges grounded out scoring Eloy Jimenez but Josh Silver rolled out to end the threat. Cubs had nine hits as RIce, Jimenez, Martinez, and Roberto Caro all had two.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (2-4, 4.01 ERA) turned in a solid outing, working 6.2 innings and throwing 82 pitches. The left-hander allowed three runs on seven hits and fanned six. Scott Effross tossed 1.1 scoreless relief innings.

SB-Cubs News: Preston Morrison (5-3, 3.76 ERA) toes the rubber on Thursday night against Lake County at Four Winds Field. The Captains are 1.5 games out with four left in South Bend. 

Dominican Summer League—Yankees 1 (11), Cubs 1 (3)

Cubs (4-6) pitching walked 12 hitters as the Yankees (7-3) won easily.

Hitting Recap: Only three hits for the Cubs. 1B Luis Hidalgo went 2-for-3 and hit a solo homer in the 7th. DH Henderson Perez singled while Jose Jules and Rafael Narea both knocked in runs in the 9th.

Pitching Chart: Riger Fernandez (0-2, 6.35 ERA) gave up two runs over 3.2 innings, allowing two hits and five walks. Miguel Estevez got charged with four runs (4 walks) and Juan Rengifo walked three and surrendered five runs. Aneuris Rosario retired all six of the hitters he faced over the final two frames. 

Cubs Notes: Cubs face Mets 1 on Thursday.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (14), Twins (4)

Cubs exploded for 14 runs after trailing 3-0 after four innings. 

Hitting Recap: CF Yovanny Cuevas (.313) tied the game with a bases loaded triple in the 5th but was thrown out at home trying to stretch it into a grand slam. The 17-year-old second year pro finished the day 2-for-4 with 4 RBI. 2B Ronaldo Lopez (.063) and RF Tony Rijo (.333) both knocked in a pair while DH Miguel Amaya (.308) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. 3B Henrry Pedra  (.316) scored three times as he reached on a single and two walks.

Pitching Chart: Carlos Ocampo, a 17-year-old Columbian signed last summer, made his second start and surrendered three runs on three hits and three walks over four innings. Ivan Medina (3-0, 1.00 ERA) allowed a run over four innings, recording two punchouts. Sucre Valdez threw the ninth.

Cubs Notes: Cubs battle the Giants on Wednesday.
