News, Notes and Game Recaps from June 17

Eugene won their debut and both DSL squads won but it was a rough night for the rest of the affiliates as three losses ended via walk-off

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Memphis (Cardinals) 7, Iowa 6

Iowa battled back from a 7-1 deficit but fell short.

Hitting Recap: SS Munenori Kawasaki knocked in two runs with a double while 2B Logan Watkins (.252) and 3B Kris Negron (.268) both had two hits. C Cael Brockmeyer went 2-for-4 with a double in his season debut for the I-Cubs. Jeimer Candelario (.345) added a sacrifice fly as a pinch-hitter in the 8th. 

Pitching Chart: Another rough outing for Aaron Brooks, making his second rehab start. He surrender a pair of homers and allowed seven runs on seven hits and a walk over three innings. Miguel Mejia fanned two in two shutout innings and Giovanni Soto added two more shutout innings. Armando Rivero blanked the Red Birds in the 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa has not named a starter for Saturday night....1B Daniel Vogelbach leads the PCL with 43 walks as he added two more to his total on Friday night. John Andreoli is third with 39 but leads the PCL with 91 strikeouts.

Southern League—AA—Game 1—Jackson (Mariners) 2, Tennessee 1—9 innings; Game 2—Jackson 1, Tennessee 0

Smokies lost the opener on a walk-off sacrifice fly and got walked-off again for the sweep.

Hitting Recap: GAME 1—Smokies collected nine hits but could only push one runs across when CF Jacob Hannemann (.237) scored 3B Daniel Lockhart (double) on a ground out.  RF Bijan Rademacher (.289) and 1B David Bote (.267) had two hits each.....GAME 2—Smokies were held to two hits, a single from 2B Chesny Young (.295) and a double from Victor Caratini (.296).  

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Duane Underwood threw 79 pitches over four innings and gave up a run on four hits and two walks. Juan Paniagua blanked the Generals for two innings and the only base runner reached on a walk. James Farris tossed two shutout frames but a walk, a double, an intentional walk and a sac fly ended the game....GAME 2— Starling Peralta made a spot start and blanked the Generals over four innings, allowing one hits while fanning four. Nick Sarianides thew a scoreless 5th and David Garner fell to 1-5, giving up the winning run in the bottom of the 7th on a walk with the bases loaded. 

Smokies News: Tyler Skulina (3-4, 3.67 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night.

Carolina League—High A—Game 1—Potomac (Nationals) 4, Myrtle Beach 2—8 innings; Game 2—Potomac 4, Myrtle Beach 3

The P-Nats used a walk-off two-run homer to win the first game and a four-run 3rd in the nightcap to complete the sweep. 

Hitting Recap: GAME 1—Five hits for the Pelicans, all singles. 2B Ian Happ and LF Charcer Burks delivered RBI singles......GAME 2—Pelicans grabbed a 2-0 lead on a RBI double by 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.226) in the 1st and a sacrifice fly from SS Andrew Ely (.143) in the 2nd. Happ doubled home a run in the 9th with two outs but Balaguert flied out to center to end the game with runners on 2nd and 3rd. 

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Jonathan Martinez went 5.1 frames, allowing two runs on two walks and five hits, one leaving the yard. He fanned two and threw 80 pitches. Tommy Thorpe (2-3, 4.02 ERA) got the final two outs of the sixth and worked a scoreless 7th but surrendered a walk-off two-run homer......GAME 2— RH Zach Hedges (6-5, 2.47 ERA) went five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. The Carolina League all-star fanned five, threw 74 pitches, and recorded seven ground ball outs for a game score of 44. Dillon Maples retired all three hitters he faced. 

Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (4-3, 2.21 ERA) and Erick Leal (8-3, 3.55 ERA) start the twin-bill on Saturday.

Midwest League—Low A—Lake County (Indians) 4, South Bend 3

Lake County scored three times with two outs in the top of the 8th to keep South Bend from clinching a playoff spot.

Hitting Recap: Eloy Jimenez extended his hit streak to 13 games and collected his fourth straight multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with an intentional walk. DH Ian Rice knocked in two runs, one coming on his 8th homer. 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.307) went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. 

Pitching Chart: Casey Bloomquist retired the first 11 hitters he faced before a two-out single in the 4th ended the perfect game. He tossed a career-high seven innings, allowing a solo homer—the only run he allowed. Bloomquist fanned one, threw 76 pitches, and had the Captains pounding the ball into the dirt with 15 ground ball outs. Craig Brooks got the first two hitters of the 8th but an error by SS Bryant Flete opened the door to three runs on two hits and walk. Tyler Peitzmeier worked a scoreless 9th in his South Bend debut.

SB-Cubs News: Carson Sands (5-1, 3.72 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night against Captains.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 6, Boise (Rockies) 1

Dylan Cease fired four solid innings and Matt Rose smacked a two-run bomb as the Emeralds won the season opener.

Hitting Recap: Matt Rose set the tone in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer that gave the Ems the lead for good. Rose finished 1-2 for 2 and walked twice. LF Kevonte Mitchell had a pair of singles, one driving in a run,  and walked once. Leadoff hitter CF Darryl Wilson drew three walks, scored twice and swiped two bases. SS Andruw Monasterio was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and RF Robert Garcia collected two hits.

Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease made his NWL debut and lasted four innings, allowing a solo homer, one of two hits. The right-hander threw 58 pitches, 33 for strikes, and coaxed six ground ball outs. He fanned two and had a game score of 55. RH Enrique De Los Rio fanned three in two shutout frames and RH Jared Cheek put up two more zeros on the board in his two innings of work. RH Mark Malave worked a 1-2-3 9th to nail down the win.

Emeralds Notes: Cubs 2015 3rd round pick Bryan Hudson makes his NWL debut on Saturday night against the Hawks.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (4), Mets 1 (3)

Cubs (6-6) scored three times in the 5th to down the Mets (5-7).

Hitting Recap: The Cubs took advantage of two throwing errors in the 5th that plated runs and SS Rafael Narea  (.171) added a RBI double. LF Samir Lara (.286) laced a two-out RBI single and finished 2-for-4. RF Moises Colasante (.250) went 2-for-3, stole two bases and scored twice. 

Pitching Chart: Part of the Cubs 2015 International class was on display Friday. Brailyn Marquez (1-0, 3.00 ERA) won his first professional game as the 6-foot-4 lefty went five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks. The 17-year-old fanned four and recorded eight ground ball outs. Edison Novas (1-0, 1.64 ERA) tossed four one-hit innings and earned his first save, fanning three. In 11 relief innings, the 19-year-old has a 0.55 WHIP.

Cubs Notes: Cubs (6-6) face first-place Rangers 1 (9-2) on Saturday. 

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (9), Giants 6

Cubs (7-5) took advantage of seven errors to down the Giants (6-6).

Hitting Recap: RF Tony Rijo (280) smacked his first homer, a two-run shot, and 3B Fidel Mejia (.389) added two RBI. 2B Luis Diaz (.300) was 3-for-3 and plated a pair of runs  and 1B Abraham Rodriguez (.282) had two hits, including a double. 

Pitching Chart: Emilio Ferrebus only surrendered one run over five innings an delft in line for the win.  The 18-year-old right-hander allowed four hits, walked four and recorded four strikeouts. Sucre Valdez gave up three runs over 2.1 frames and got charged with a blown save but ended up with the win. Omar Ventura allowed two runs in 1.1 frames and left with the bases loaded in the 9th. Jhon Romero got the only hitter he face dot fly out to center and picked up his second save.
