News, Notes and Game Recaps from June 18

Myrtle Beach earned a sweep, Eugene won on a walk-off and South Bend faces a “winner goes to the playoffs” in the first-half finale.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Memphis (Cardinals) 6, Iowa 4

Memphis (31-35) used a five-run 3rd to down the Cubs (31-35) for the second straight game.

Hitting Recap: CF John Andreoli (.235) went 2-for-5 with two knocked in. 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.310) and LF Matt Murton (.318) both had two hits and a RBI. Kris Negron had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Drew Rucinski (4-6, 5.84 ERA) got the start and gave up six earned runs over five innings. Felix Pena fanned three in two perfect innings and Carl Edwards, Jr. fanned the side in a scoreless 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: Pierce Johnson (1-2, 5.23 ERA) gets the start on Sunday.

Southern League—AA—Jackson (Mariners) 9, Tennessee 8

Jackson (45-24) scored seven times in the second and hung on for the win over the Smokies (28-41).

Hitting Recap: RF Billy McKinney (.255) was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI. DH Bijan Rademacher (.287), 1B Victor Caratini (.299), and Benjamin Carhart all collected two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Rough night for Tyler Skulina (3-5, 4.48 ERA) as the right-hander didn’t make it out of the second, allowing seven earned runs on five hits, three walks and two wild pitches. Stephen Perakslis gave up two runs in 4.1 frames of relief. R.J. Alvarez made his Cubs debut and fanned the side in the 7th, Nick Sarianides fanned  a pair in the 8th.

Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng (2-2, 3.56 ERA) get the ball for the final game of the first half.

Carolina League—High A—Game 1—Myrtle Beach 2, Potomac (Nationals) 1; Game 2—Myrtle Beach 4, Potomac 0

Erick Leal blanked the P-Nats for six innings and four Myrtle Beach arms combined for a game one win.

Hitting Recap: GAME 1—SS Gleyber Torres smoked his 8th homer of the year, a solo shot over the right field wall. It was his sixth homer the other way. 2B Ian Happ (.284) made it 2-0 in the 6th when Torres singled and scored from first on a double off the top of the wall. Happ finished 2-for-2 with two doubles and a walk......GAME 2—1B Gioskar Amaya (.259) went 2-for-2 with a RBI and Happ  (.288) had two hits and scored  a run. 3B Jason Vosler (.267) and LF Daniel Spingola (.190) both knocked in runs.

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Trevor Clifton walked the bases loaded in the first, got out of the jam but threw 33 pitches to get out of the frame. The Tennessee native worked 1-2-3 second and left after one out in the 3rd. Clifton’s pitch count was kept down so he can pitch in the Carolina/California League All-Star game. James Pugliese (1-2, 4.50 ERA) worked three frames, yielding a run on one hit and a walk. He fanned one and got four ground ball outs in the 44-pitch outing. Jordan Minch allowed an inherited runner to score and got the final two outs of the 6th.  Ryan McNeil picked up his sixth save with a scoreless 7th......GAME 2—RH Erick Leal (9-3, 3.22 ERA) blanked Potomac for six innings, fanning seven while allowing five hits and two walks. He threw 94 pitches and had a game score of 67. Daury Torrez worked a 1-2-3 7th.

Pelicans News: Jeremy Null (2-3, 3.41 ERA) gets the ball in the final game of the first half.

Midwest League—Low A—Lake County (Indians) 6, South Bend 4—10 innings

South Bend led a 3-0 lead slip away along with first place. The Cubs must win beat Lake County on Sunday in the final game of the first half or miss the playoffs.

Hitting Recap: CF Donnie Dewees smacked a homer in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game at 4-4. DH Ian Rice  (.314) slugged his team-high 9th homer, a two-run blast in the 3rd. 3B Jesse Hodges (.286) went 3-for-3 and C P.J. Higgins (.286).

Pitching Chart: After two straight relief appearances, Kyle Twomey returned to the rotation and dominated the first five innings, giving up a single. In the 6th, the Captains chased the lefty with three singles and a walk, scoring twice. LH John Williamson inherited two runners with two outs and a throwing error by Jesse Hodges tied the game at 3-3. Greyfer Eregua blanked the Captains for two frames but they scored twice in the 10th 

SB-Cubs News: Kyle Miller (1-1, 1.36 ERA) gets the start in the winner goes to the playoff game. 

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 2, Boise (Rockies) 1

Matt Rose delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of he 11th for the Ems second straight win over Boise.

Hitting Recap: Eugene tied the game in the 7th when Matt Rose walked and eventually scored on a ground out by Alberto Mineo. In the 11th, Andruw Monasterio walked, took second on a sacrifice bunt from Kevonte Mitchell, and scored on Rose’s walk-off single.

Pitching Chart:  Bryan Hudson made his NWL debut and the lefty went five innings and coaxed eight ground ball outs. He only surrendered two hits but they both came in the 4th, scoring a run on a double and a single. The bullpen shot down the Hawks. Michael Knighton retired all six hitters he faced and M.T. Minacci followed that up with two more scoreless frames. Tommy Nance got the win, fanning two in the two innings.

Emeralds Notes: Jose Paulino makes his debut in the series finale.

Dominican Summer League—Rangers 1 (7), Cubs 1 (3)

Rangers used two errors and wild pitch on strike three to score five unearned runs in the bottom of the 7th.

Hitting Recap: RF Jonathan Sierra (.256) we on base four times with two singles and two walks. 1B Richard Nunez  (.250) went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI and Jose Jules (.261) singled, scored and knocked in an a run. 

Pitching Chart: Jesus Tejada got the start and went five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks. Bryan Molina got charged with a blown save and took the loss as two hits and a walk led to five unearned runs. Aneuris Rosario allowed both inherited runners to score and threw 1.1 no-hit innings.

Cubs Notes: Cubs have Sunday off.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (5), D-Back 2 (3)

18-year-old Hector Garcia fired six strong innings and the Cubs made the most of their six hits to down D-Backs.

Hitting Recap: DH Luis Diaz (.295), LF Abraham Rodriguez (.279) and 1B Franklin Tineo (.095) all went 1-for-4 with a RBI. 3B Fidel Mejia had two hits and scored twice

Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia spun six solid innings, surrendering an unearned run on six hits with three strikeouts. Fauris Guerrero (2-1, 2.38 ERA) was charged with a blown save but go the win, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over two innings. Jhon Romero fanned two in the 9th for his third save.

Cubs Notes: Cubs have Sunday off.
