Big night for young arms as Jen-Ho Tseng, Erick Leal, Preston Morrison, Bryan Hudson, and Javier Assad all had strong outings stateside as well as Brailyn Marquez and Hector Garcia in the DSL.

Ian Rice, Gioskar Amaya promoted

Ian Rice hit his way out of South Bend and is off to Myrtle Beach. The Cubs 29th round pick last June out of the University of Houston batted .310/.417/.587 in 39 games and led the MWL first -half champs in HR (9) and a 1.004 OPS. He was second with 26 walks in 39 games and knocked in 27. The 22-year-old Alabama native played two years at Chipola Junior College and then transferred to Houston, helping the Cougars to a conference title and a #1 seed in the regionals. Rice made his pro debut last year in Eugene and hit .252/.375/.340 with 2 HR and 19 RBI in 47 games.

The Cubs also promoted C Gioskar Amaya to AA Tennessee. After a slow start to the season, Amaya heated up with the weather, especially in June. In 17 games during the month, he hit .321/.415/.736 with five doubles, one triple, five home runs and 11 RBIs, drawing 10 walks against 12 strikeouts. On the season, Amaya .245/.335/.427 with nine doubles, one triple, five homers and 17 RBIs. An infielder-turned-catcher, Amaya will be appearing in his first stint with Tennessee.

Cubs draft picks

I’m just gonna go ahead and blame the College World Series for only one guy officially signing after the draft—7th rounder Michael Cruz. Top-pick Thomas Hatch, a right-hander from Oklahoma State, is still racking up wins for the Cowboys, and holds the key to how much the Cubs will be able to hand out to their picks. However, per website Chicago Cubs Draft Tracker several announcements will be coming soon as RHP Stephen Ridings (8th round-Haverford College), LHP Wyatt Short (13th round-Mississippi), RHP Matt Swarmer (19th round-Kutztown), C Samuel Tidaback (21st Round-North Georgia), and Connor Myers (Old Dominion) have all indicated they have signed. Others headed to Mesa include RHP Tyson Miller, (4th round-California Baptist), RHP Duncan Robinson (9th-Dartmouth), RHP Dakota Mekkes (10th-Michigan State), RHP Michael Ruckerr (11th-BYU), RHP Holden Cammack (16th-Oral Roberts), SS Zack Short (17th-Sacred Heart), LHP Colton Freeman (20th-Alabama) and RHP Tyler Peyton (29th-Iowa).

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 7, Nashville (A’s) 4

Cubs pounded Sounds’ pitching for 14 hits including a 4-for-4 night from Logan Watkins.

Hitting Recap: Iowa took advantage of five Nashville errors and collected 14 hits in the win. 2B Logan Watkins (.265)  led the offense with four singles and two runs. SS Munenori Kawasaki was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and LF Matt Murton had three hits, including a double. 3B Jeimer Candelario and CF Juan Perez both had two doubles and a RBI.

Pitching Chart: RH Drew Rucinski (5-6, 5.82 ERA) lasted five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks. He fanned three and threw 97 pitches for a game score of 45. Armando Rivero fanned four in three shutout frames and Joel Peralta worked a scoreless 9th for his second straight save. 

I-Cubs Notes: The Iowa Cubs have placed RHP Pierce Johnson on the 7-day DL retroactive to June 20......RH Starling Peralta was promoted from Tennessee to Iowa and got the start in the second game of the DH on June 23.....Cubs have not named a starter for Saturday night’s tilt at Oklahoma City.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 4, Pensacola 1

Jen-Ho Tseng tossed six solid innings as the Smokies evened the series with the Blue Wahoos.

Hitting Recap: LF Kelly Dugan (.206) smacked his 6th homer of the season, as solo shot in the 8th and his first since May 10. RF Billy McKinney (.258) and 1B Benjamin Carhart (.250) delivered RBI singles in the first and Chesny Young’s sacrifice fly scored CF Jacob Hannemann (.243), who tripled. 2B Ian Happ went 2-for-4 with a run scored in his first AA start.

Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng only allowed one run over six innings, his fourth straight start of only allowing one earned run or less (23 IP). The 21-year-old gave up six hits, walked three and fanned four in the 81-pitch outing. Game score 59. R.J. Alvarez, Josh Conway and Jose Rosario all three a scoreless innings with Rosario earning his second save.

Smokies News: Duane Underwood (0-4, 5.12 ERA) is still looking for his first AA win as the right-hander takes the mound on Saturday night against Pensacola.....A few transactions to catch up on. RH Joe Nathan has been assigned to Tennessee to start his rehab. Nathan was signed by the Cubs last month and has been recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 41-year-old is a veteran of 777 big league games has 377 career saves......C Alberto Mineo has been assigned to AA to provide catching depth. Mineo signed as a free agent back in 2010 out of Italy.....Smokies placed RH Nick Sarianides on the 7-dayDL and activated RH Josh Conway from the DL. The Smokies also sent OF Alex Bautista to Eugene.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 4, Carolina (Braves) 3

Charcer Burks’ RBI double in the bottom of the 8th gave the Pelicans the win over Carolina.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd on back-to-back RBI doubles from SS Gleyber Torres (.256) and 3B Jason Vosler (.273). Myrtle Beach tied the game in the 6th when LF Charcer Burks (.224) reached on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored on a wild pitch. With one out David Bote ripped a pinch-hit single and scored from first on the Burks game-winning double. Burks, Vosler and 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.226) all finished two hits.

Pitching Chart: Erick Leal went six innings in his 99-pitch outing, allowing three runs, two coming on a homer. The 21-year-old gave up five hits, walked one, fanned six and had a game score of 55. Daury Torrez worked a scoreless 7th and Tommy Thorpe (3-4, 3.98 ERA) got the win with 1.1 shutout frames. Ryan McNeil fanned the final two hitters of the game for his second save.

Pelicans News: Jeremy Null (2-3, 3.66 ERA) takes the mound Saturday night against Carolina.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 4, Dayton (Reds) 0

Preston Morrison tossed seven shutout frames as South Bend beat the Dragons for the second straight night.

Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the 5th on a RBI triple by Bryant Flete, who scored when Carlos Sepulveda grounded into a double play. They added two more in the 8th on RBI groundouts from Eloy Jimenez and Josh Silver. Jimenez went 0-for-3 to snap his hitting streak at 15 games. P.J. Higgins went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to up his OBP to .395.

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (7-3, 2.97 ERA) blanked the Dragons for seven innings, allowing three hits and a walk. The right-hander coaxed 10 ground ball outs, fanned six and only needed 85 pitches. Game score 80. Scott Effross and Craig Brooks both tossed a scoreless frame.

SB-Cubs News: Casey Bloomquist (4-3, 2.56 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 6, Spokane (Rangers) 0

Three Emeralds pitchers combined to blank Spokane. 

Hitting Recap: Ems scored four times in the 3rd, two crossing home on a single from SS Andruw Monasterio (.351). 1B Chris Pieters (.269) followed with a RBI double and 3B Wladimir Galindo (.276) knocked in the final run of the frame with a single. 2B Yeiler Peguero (.333) singled and scored on a throwing error in the 4th and LF Kevonte Mitchell (.133) walked to lead off the 7th, stole second, and scored on two wild pitches. CF Darryl Wilson went 2-for-5, scored once and stole his third base.

Pitching Chart: Bryan Hudson pitched one-hit ball over five innings, issuing two walks to go along with four punchouts. The 19-year-old  lefty got 11 ground ball outs and had a game score of 68. RH Michael Knighton blanked the Indians over two innings, working around a bases loaded jam in the 6th, to extend his scoreless streak to 8 IP. Tommy Nance got the final six outs, four on groundouts.

Emeralds Notes: Jose Paulino (0-0, 0.00 ERA) gets his second start of the season.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 4, Angels 3

Cubs (3-1) built a 4-0 lead and hung on for the win. 

Hitting Recap: CF Jose Gonzalez (.154), C Gustavo Polanco (.417) and 3B Rafael Mejia (.357) all had two hits. RF Luis Ayala (.368) got credit for the Cubs only RBI.

Pitching Chart: Javier Assad made his professional debut and the Mexico native fired five shutout innings, working around three hits and three walks. The right-hander fanned four and had a game score of 62. Yapson Gomez worked two scoreless frames, gave up three runs in the 8th, and worked a 1-2-3 9th for the four-inning save. 

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (5), Indians 4

Cubs built a 5-0 lead and hung on for the win.

Hitting Recap: LF Jose Jules (.268) gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the 1st with a two-run double, scoring 2B Orian Nunez (.216) and SS Rafael Narea (.235). Nunez added a sacrifice fly in the 2nd. A wild pitch and a RBI single from C Franklin Tineo (.158) put the Cubs ahead 5-0 in the 6th. DH Jose Rojas (.308) reached on two singles and a walk.

Pitching Chart: 17-year-old Brailyn Marquez (2-0, 1.93 ERA) mowed down the Indians hitters, fanning six and holding the Tribe to a hit and three walks over five shutout innings. Elvis Diaz threw three frames and got charged with four unearned runs in the 8th. Aneuris Rosario worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.

Cubs Notes: Cubs have signed free agent pitchers Fernando Calderon, 19, a righty from the Dominican Republic, and Luis Silva, 19, a left-hander from Venezuela.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (3), Dodgers 1 (0)

Three Cubs hurlers blanked the Dodgers on three hits.

Hitting Recap: RF Luis Ubiera (.160) was 2-for-2 and delivered a RBI double in the 8th. 3B Richard Nunez (.265) had two hits while DH Fidel Mejia (.393) and RF Abraham Rodriguez (.291) added singles.

Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia (1-0, 2.08 ERA), 18, fanned six over six shutout innings, limiting the Dodgers to two hits. Fauris Guerrero struckout three in two frames and Luiz Escanio worked around two walks a hit in the 9th for the save.
