News, Notes and Game Recaps from June 29

Myrtle Beach’s Jonathan Martinez fired seven shutout innings and Ian Rice stayed hot with the game’s only RBI. Tennessee, South Bend and Eugene all flew the “W” flag.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa

I-Cubs had the night off and travel to Round Rock for a doubleheader on Thursday with Ryan Williams (4-1, 3.30 ERA) and Mr. TBA scheduled to start.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 4, Jacksonville (Marlins) 2

Bijan Rademacher knocked in three runs and the Smokies won the series opener.

Hitting Recap: LF Bijan Rademacher (.277) smacked a solo homer in the 2nd and added a two-run double in the 6th. C Victor Caratini (.295) launched his second homer, a solo shot over the right-field wall, in the top of the 4th for a 2-1 Smokies lead. CF Jacob Hannemann was 2-for-4 and stole his 26th base while  RF Billy McKinney (.277) added a multi-hit game and is batting .371 over his last 10 games (13-for-35). 2B Ian Happ was held hitless but walked twice and swiped his first base in AA. 

Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng (4-3, 2.85 ERA) went five innings, getting charged with two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk. The 21-year-old fanned four in the 88-pitch outing and has allowed one run or less in each of his last five starts since coming off the DL. Josh Conway worked around two hits in the 6th and R.J. Alvarez fanned three in 1.2 innings, surrendering three singles. Jose Rosario got the final four outs, one on strikes, for his third save.

Smokies News: Duane Underwood (0-5, 5.44 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 1, Salem (Red Sox) 0

Jonathan Martinez blanked Salem for seven innings and  Ian Rice produced the game’s only RBI.

Hitting Recap: SS Gleyber Torres (.258) extended his on-base streak to 13 games with a single to lead off the 4th and scored on Ian Rice’s fourth double since joining the Pelicans last week. Torres finished 2-for-4 and Jeffrey Baez (.226) aded two singles. 

Pitching Chart: Jonathan Martinez held the Red Sox to three hits over six shutout innings, fanning four while walking two. Michael Wagner retired all six hitters he faced. Ryan McNeil made it seven straight appearances with a save stranding the bases loaded in the 9th.

Pelicans News: Jeremy Null will get the start on Thursday after Erick Leal’s start was scratched.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 8, Lake County (Indians) 2

Cubs used a five-run 4th to pull away from Lake County.

Hitting Recap: RF Eddy Martinez (.238/.312/.363) ripped a pair of doubles, one clearing the bases in the Cubs five-run 4th. A quick look at the stat line for Martinez may have you shaking your head, but the more I watch the 20-year-old Cuban, the more I see why the Cubs anted up $3 million for his services. Martinez has opened his stance during the delivery and added a leg kick after struggling to start his pro career.....DH Eloy Jimenez (.341) got a gift RBI double when the left fielder misplayed a fly ball to extend his on-base game streak to a team-high 20 games. Donnie Dewees reached base in 19 straight games earlier this season. 3B Jesse Hodges (.279) went 2-for-4 and Sutton Whiting (.231) scored twice and knocked in a run.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (3-4, 3.40 ERA) gave up two unearned runs over six innings on five hits. The lefty fanned two, recorded 10 ground ball outs, and threw 85 pitches, 54 for strikes. John Williamson tossed two shutout frames and Pedro Araujo fanned two in the ninth.

SB-Cubs News: Preston Morrison (7-3, 2.97 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night against Lake County.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 9, Boise (Rockies) 7

Emeralds used a four-run 7th to get past Boise as M.T. Minacci earned his first win as a pro.

Hitting Recap: Cubs gabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when CF D.J. Wilson reached third on a error by the first baseman and scored on RF Kevonte Mitchell’s sacrifice fly. 2B Trent Giambrone slugged his first pro homer leading off the third for a 2-0 lead. The Ems upped their advantage to 4-0 on a RBI double from DH Wladimir Galindo and a RBI single from Alex Bautista in the 4th. SS Yeiler Peguero singled to lead off the 5th, took second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a fly ball to right and scored on a RBI single from Chris Pieters. Four hits and an error broke the game open in the 7th as Pieters, Tyler Payne, and Giambrone all drove in runs. Pieters finished 3-for-4 while Peguero, Galdino and Giambrone all had two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease held the Hawks to one hit over the first three innings but Boise scored three times in the 4th on a walk, a wild pitch and three hits, including a two-run double. M.T. Minacci worked a scoreless fifth but gave up two runs in the sixth and another run in the 7th.  The 21-year-old earned his first win as a pro and finished with a line of 2.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. Mark Malave got the final out of the 7th but loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 8th. He fanned the next two hitters and got a ground out to end the threat. Michael Knighton gave up back-to-back doubles and had the tying runs on but got the final hitter to pop out to short for his second save.

Emeralds Notes: Eugene has not named a starter for Thursday night.

Arizona Rookie League—Mariners 5, Cubs 4

Dimas Ojeda hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 6th to give the M’s the win.

Hitting Recap: Cubs had nine hits and drew three walks but fanned 13 times and were just 2-for-14 with RISP. C Gustavo Polanco has hit in all seven games he’s played, going 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored, his fifth multi-hit game. The 19-year-old Venezuelan debuted last year in the VSL (.282/.332/.333, 0 HR, 23 RBI, 53 games). 1B Kevin Zamudio and LF Yohan Matos both collected two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Starter Andin Diaz only got one out, allowing a run on three hits. Andry Rondon fanned six over 2.2 innings but got charged with two runs on three hits and a walk. Yapson Gomez tossed two scoreless frames and gave up a two-run homer in the sixth as the M’s took a 5-4 lead. Gomez took the loss and finished with  a line of 4 IP, 2 H 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K. Tanner Griggs fanned one in a scoreless 8th.

Dominican Summer League— Mets 1 (11), Cubs 1 (2) 

Mets pounded Cubs pitching for 15 hits and drew six walks in the win

Hitting Recap: RF Jonathan Sierra (.194) scored both runs, reaching on a single and a walk. C Franklin Tineo (.149) and LF Moises Colasante (.179) got credit for RBI

Pitching Chart: Andres Bonalde (1-2, 7.04) got tagged for six runs on 11 hits and two walks in 3.2 innings. Edison Novas allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over 2.1 frames. Juan Rengifo walked four and surrendered an unearned run in the last two frames. 

Dominican Summer League—Game 1—Cubs 2 (3), Orioles (1); Game 2— Orioles 2 (2),  Cubs 2 (0)

Cubs (15-6) took the opener but the Birds (8-12) got revenge in the night-cap.

Hitting Recap: GAME 1—RF Fidel Matos (.148) plated a pair of runs and 2B Luis Diaz (.242) was 1-for-2 with a RBI. LF Abraham Rodriguez (.328) collected two hits, including a double and scored once. .....GAME 2—Only four hits for the Cubs, two from Rodriguez, including a triple. C Miguel Amaya (.274) doubled and Fernando Kelli  (.286) had a single. 

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Carlos Ocampo earned his first pro victory, tossing five innings while allowing a run on three hits and two walks. The 17-year-old Columbian fanned four and had a game score of 61. Luiz Escanio blanked the Birds over the final two innings for his second save.....GAME 2—Emilio Ferrebus (0-3, 6.00 ERA) fanned five over four innings but gave up two runs on four hits and three walks. Omar Ventura tossed two scoreless frames.
