News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 1

Tennessee won its fifth straight, outfielder Darryl Wilson smacked his first pro homer for Eugene, and Myrtle Beach battered Potomac.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock (Rangers) 3, Iowa 0

Four Express pitchers combined for the shutout to make it three straight over Iowa.

Hitting Recap: Only five hits for Iowa, four singles and a double from LF Mark Zagunis (.286).

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny (4-2, 4.98 ERA) went six innings, throwing 96 pitches and striking out seven. He held the Express scoreless over the first three innings but gave up two runs in the 4th and another in the 6th. Zastryzny allowed five hits, walked two, hit a batter, threw a wild pitch, and had a game score of 60. Miguel Mejia worked two scoreless frames.

I-Cubs Notes: RH Pierce Johnson (1-3, 6.92 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night in Round Rock.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 5, Jacksonville (Marlins) 3

Smokies won their fifth straight and made it three in a row at Jacksonville.

Hitting Recap: Smokies faced former Cub Eric Jokisch, who threw a no-hitter for the Smokies back in 2013. The lefty banked the Cubs for four innings, fanning five. Tennesse got on the board in the 5th on a RBI single from 2B Chesny Young (.287) and Gioskar Amaya (.133) ripped a double down the right field line to tie the game in the 6th and the go-ahead run scored on the play after a wild throw. CF Jacob Hannemann (.247) doubled home LF Trey Martin (.121) who led off the 7th with a triple. Hannemann eventually scored when RF Billy McKinney  (.265) beat out a potential double playground ball to second. 2B Ian Happ (.481) went 0-for-5. 

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn (6-2, 2.42 ERA) needed 85 pitches to get through five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits. The right-hander fanned six and got six ground ball outs for a game score of 48. Stephen Perakslis was charged with an unearned run in his two innings of relief. RH James Farris got the final six outs for his first AA save.

Smokies News: Brad Markey (6-3, 2.34 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night in Jacksonville.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 8, Potomac (Nationals) 1

Pelicans scored early and often holding a 7-0 lead after four innings and cruised to the victory to even the series.

Hitting Recap: Five different Pelicans had multi-hit games—SS Gleyber Torres (.261), 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.221), 2B David Bote (.313), RF Jeffrey Baez (.229) and LF Daniel Spingola (.182). C Ian Rice (.370) went 1-for-3 with a two RBI and Baez launched a solo homer deep over the left field wall in the 8th. 

Pitching Chart: Erick Leal(10-3, 3.11 ERA) only went five innings and threw just 57 pitches, 46 for strikes. He fanned seven, gave up four hits and had a game score of 69. Pedro Araujo made his Carolina League debut, working around two hits and a walk over two innings. Daury Torrez worked the final two frames, allowing a solo homer in the 9th.

Pelicans News: Jake Stinnett (6-3, 3.36 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night....RpH Daniel Lewis was activated from the DL and assigned to Eugene.

Midwest League—Low A—Lansing (Blue Jays) 3, South Bend 2

Lansing took an early lead and hung on to take the series opener.

Hitting Recap: South Bend grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when CF Donnie Dewees (.263) singled, took second on a passed ball, and scored on a single from LF Eloy Jimenez (.337), his MWL leading 56th RBI. 2B Carlos Sepulveda  (.306) ripped a RBI single in the 7th but the Cubs left two in scoring position with one out. Dewees finished 2-for-3 and 3B Jesse Hodges (.285) added two singles. Every Cubs starter had at least one hit except 1B Tyler Alamo (.255) and he reached on a walk. 

Pitching Chart: Casey Bloomquist (5-4, 2.51 ERA) got tagged for nine hits over five innings, surrendering threw runs while fanning five. He threw 87 pitches and had a game score of 46. Kyle Twomey tossed three shutout frames, striking out three and Scott Effross worked a 1-2-3 9th.

SB-Cubs News: RH Kyle Miller (3-1, 1.40 ERA) looks to even the series on Saturday night against the Lugnuts.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 7, Salem-Keizer (Giants) 4

Darryl Wilson and Robert Garcia both homered to lead Eugene (11-4) to a win in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: LF Robert Garcia (.317) smacked his first NWL homer to lead off the 3rd and DH Matt Rose (.279) ripped a double to score CF Darryl Wilson (.189), who walked and took third on a single from C Taylor Davis. Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to score RF Kevonte Mitchell (.196) in the 4th and Wilson followed with his first pro homer, a long two-run bomb to right. Ems added a run in the 5th on a wild pitch and 3B Wladimir Galindo (.269) ripped a RBI double in the 7th. 

Pitching Chart: Jose Paulino (1-0, 0.56 ERA) fanned eight over six innings and held the Volcanoes to a run on four hits. The left-hander got eight ground ball outs and had a game score of 73....Coming off the DL and assigned from Myrtle Beach, Daniel Lewis saw his first action for Eugene and was greeted with a three-run homer before he could get an out. Lewis retired the next five hitters without anymore damage. Jared Cheek worked the final 1.1 scoreless frames for his second save. 

Emeralds Notes: Manuel Rondon (2-0, 0.90 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night......C Taylor Davis joined the Ems for a rehab stint for a sore wrist from AAA Iowa.....Eugene has a five-game lead over Hillsboro and Salem-Keizer.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Cubs had the day off and are back in action on Saturday night against the A’s. 

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (5), Rangers (2)

Jose Gutierrez smacked a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to give the Cubs the walk-off win.

Hitting Recap: Receiving a $500,000 bonus last summer, switch-hitting outfielder Jose Gutierrez (.267) made his first pro homer a big one, driving a 10th inning homer over the left field wall. He finished 2-for-4 and scored twice. LF Jonathan Sierra (.211) had two hits and knocked in a run while DH Luis Hidalgo plated his 11th RBI. 

Pitching Chart: Brailyn Marquez didn’t allow any earned runs over five innings but two wild pickoff throws led to two runs scoring in the 3rd and 4th. The 17-year-old left-hander fanned four, walked two and allowed four hits. Bryan Molina worked around four hits and walk in four shutout innings and Freddy Tineo (1-1, 5.68 ERA) earned the win with two scoreless frames. It was the first pro win for Tineo, 18, who made 12 starts last year in the VSL.

Dominican Summer League—Twins 5, Cubs 2 (2)

Twins (12-11) scored five times in the first to beat the Cubs (16-8).

Hitting Recap: A star in Panama’s youth baseball championships before turning pro, Abraham Rodriguez (.368) signed for a reported $250,000 last year and has been the hottest hitter in the class. The 18-year-old went 3-for-4 and knocked in both runs, one on a RBI double. It was his 8th multi-hit game and second time with three hits. SS Fidel Mejia (.345) scored both runs reaching on a single and a walk. 

Pitching Chart: Alfredo Colorado (2-2, 3.52 ERA) got tagged for five runs in the first but blanked the Twins the next three innings. Sucre Valdez tossed four scoreless frames with one strikeout.
