Kyle Miller fired a gem and Eddy Martinez ripped a two-run homer to lead South Bend to a win. Myrtle Beach erupted for 11 runs and Eugene wins again.

While the Cubs have only made the signings of C Michael Cruz (7th round), SS Zack Short (17th round) and 2B Trent Giambrone (25th round) official, they’ve also agreed to term with many other draft picks. July 2 IFA news

For the second time in three years the Cubs are in the penalty phase of the July 2 International Free Agent signing period. Cubs are only allowed to sign players for a maximum of $300,000 for the next two years. No Cubs signings were reported but you can expect several deals throughout the summer.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Game 1— Suspended from April 18—Round Rock (Rangers) 3, Iowa 2; Game 2—Iowa 4, Round Rock 1

Hitting Recap: GAME 1—2B Kris Negron (.250) got Iowa on the board in the 8th with a RBI single and DH Tim Federowicz (.300) smacked a solo homer in the 9th......GAME 2—Cubs took a 1-0 lead in 1st on a leadoff homer from CF John Andreoli (.236), his 11th. Andreoli walked with one out in the 3rd, stole second and third (18), and scored on a double from 2B Logan Watkins (.280), who eventually scored on a sac fly from DH Daniel Vogelbach (.298). Cael Brockmeyer (.185) delivered a RBI single in the 4th, scoring Federowicz, who doubled. Watkins finished 3-for-3.

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Jake Buchanan only allowed one run, working 6.2 innings. The right-hander gave up five hits, walked two and fanned four in the 94-pitch outing. Armando Rivero (0-1, 4.26 ERA) allowed an inherited runner to score in the 7th and the Express added two more runs before Rivero struckout the side....GAME 2— Pierce Johnson (1-3, 6.92 ERA) fanned six in 3.2 innings, allowing a solo homer, one of two hits, and walked two in the 63-pitch outing. It was his 8th start and his second since coming off the DL with a blister problem. C.J. Riefenhauser (1-1, 6.00 ERA) fanned two in 1.1 scoreless innings for the win. Felix Pena struckout four over the final two frames for his third save.

I-Cubs Notes: Clayton Richard will make his second rehab start on Sunday night at Round Rock.

Southern League—AA—Jacksonville (Marlins) 7, Tennessee 2

Suns ended the Smokies five-game win streak.

Hitting Recap: Smokies took a 1-0 lead in the 1st on a ground-rule double by LF Bijan Rademacher (.280) and a RBI single from 2B Ian Happ (.484). In the 6th, Rademacher singled and scored from second on a ground out as it looked like C Victor Caratini (.297) was safe at first on the play, and while they waited for the umps signal, Rademacher scored. Rademacher, Happ and Caratini all finished with two hits. 

Pitching Chart: RH Brad Markey (6-4, 2.78 ERA) didn’t have it on Saturday night, giving up a pair of homers and needing 67 pitches to get through the first three innings. He finished with a line of 4 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, game score 23. Markey has allowed 11 homers in 80 innings, tied with teammate Tyler Skulina for most in SL. Josh Conway walked four in a third of an inning, allowing one run, and David Berg gave up a run in 1.2 frames. Joe Nathan worked his second straight 1-2-3 inning and Jose Rosario retired all three hitters he faced in the 8th. 

Smokies News: Tyler Skulina (3-6, 4.83 ERA) gets the start on Sunday night in Jacksonville.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 11, Potomac (Nationals) 9

Pelicans raced out to a 11-2 lead and hung on for the win.

Hitting Recap: 2B David Bote (.346) had three hits, scored twice and knocked in a run to pace the 10-hit attack. LF Charcer Burks (.229) and CF Rashad Crawford (.232) both went 1-for-5 with 2 RBI. C Ian Rice (.355) hit his third homer,a solo shot, and SS Gleyber Torres (.264) had two hits, scored once and drove in a run.

Pitching Chart: After two straight starts without allowing a run (15 innings), Jake Stinnett (7-3, 3.81 ERA) made it third straight but got charged with six earned runs in 5.2 innings. The former second-round pick threw 98 pitches, allowed seven hits, walked three and had a game score of 43. Michael Wagner allowed two inherited runners to score and gave up three more in 1.1 innings. Jordan Minch worked 1.2 scoreless frames and Ryan McNeil got the final out for his 10th save, and 8th straight.

Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (4-4, 2.66 ERA) takes the mound Sunday night against Potomac.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 3, Lansing (Blue Jays) 1

Homers from Eddy Martinez and Bryant Flete, and the right-arm of Kyle Miller led South Bend to a win.

Hitting Recap: RF Eddy Martinez (.236) gave South Bend a  2-1 lead  in the 6th with his 7th homer, a two-run shot. SS Bryant Flete (.205) slugged his first homer, a solo bast in the 7th. CF Donnie Dewees (.270) went 3-for-4 and has an eight-game hitting streak (12-30). 1B Tyler Alamo (.261) had two hits as every starter except LF Eloy Jimenez (.332) had a base knock. 

Pitching Chart: RH Kyle Miller (4-1, 1.24 ERA) fanned a career-high seven hitters over six innings, allowing two hits and an unearned run in the 92-pitch gem. Miller had a game score of 76. LH Tyler Peitzmeier fanned four over the final three scoreless frames, earning his first save.

SB-Cubs News: Adbert Alzolay (5-4, 4.39 ERA) toes the rubber on Sunday night vs. Lansing.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 4, Salem-Keizer (Giants) 3

Ems (12-4) used a three-run third to beat the Volcanoes (6-10). 

Hitting Recap: Ems scored three times in the third as C Tyler Payne led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from RF Kevonte Mitchell. CF Darryl Wilson walked (11) with two outs and scored on a double to the right-center field wall off the bat of SS Andruw Monasterio, his 12th RBI. After 1B Taylor Davis walked, Matt Rose singled home Monasterio. Eugene added an insurance run in the 7th as Mitchell walked, stole second and took third on a throwing error from the catcher, and scored on a passed ball. Mitchell went 1-for-2 to extend his hit streak to nine games. Payne finished 2-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Manuel Rondon lasted four innings in his third start, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk. The left-hander fanned five and recorded five ground ball outs. RH Michael Knighton (1-0, 1.29 ERA) got a double play grounder to end the 5th, and retired the side in order in the 6th and 7th. Alex Santana gave up a run in the 8th and Mark Malave got the final three outs for his second save.

Emeralds Notes: Jesus Castillo (1-1, 1.80 ERA) makes his third start on Sunday night.

Arizona Rookie League—A’s 9, Cubs 5

A’s (6-4) scored six times in the top of the 9th to knock off the Cubs (6-4).

Hitting Recap: Cubs cut the lead to 3-2 in the 4th on two errors and a wild pitch. They added three runs in the 9th as CF Jose Gonzalez and 2B Zack Short plated runs. Short and LF Ruben Reyes both had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Former Baltimore Oriole Brian Matusz made his Cubs debut after signing a minor league deal on June 15. The 29-year-old left-hander retired six of the seven hitters he faced, fanning two and allowing a single. Pablo Ochoa got charged with three unearned run in the 4th after a scoreless third. Tanner Griggs threw three shutout innings, his best outing, but Jose Leidenz got charged with six runs in the 9th, three earned.

Dominican Summer League— Pirates (2), Cubs 1 (1)

Pirates (9-16) scored two times in the bottom of the 8th to down the Cubs (11-14). 

Hitting Recap: Only five hits for the Cubs, all singles. They scored in the second when C Franklin Tineo (.154) singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a RBI single from 3B Orian Nunez (.254).

Pitching Chart: Jesus Tejada tossed five shutout innings, allowing five hits while fanning four. Game score 64. The 19-year-old right-hander pitches to contact and has a 1.66 ERA over 70.2 innings in his two-year pro career in the DSL. Juan Rengifo blanked the Pirates for two innings but a single, a walk, an error and a wild pitch led to two runs. Aneuris Rosario got the final two outs.

Dominican Summer League— Giants (2), Cubs 2 (1)—Suspended in 4th inning—Rain

Giants held a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning when play was suspended. The game will be finished on Monday and a second seven-inning game will be played.
