News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 3

South Bend rallied in the bottom of the 8th for the Cubs only win on Sunday. Clayton Richard was solid in a rehab start for Iowa and two more draft pics made their pro debuts.

Tideback and Myers make pro debuts

C Samuel Tidaback and CF Connor Myers made their pro debut on Sunday night for Mesa in the Arizona Rookie League......Drafted in the 21st round, Tidaback went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. After spending two years at Ball State, heattended North Georgia where he hit .332/.408/.549 with 20 homers in two years......Myers, who went 0-for-4, was selected in the 27th round out of Old Dominion and is known for his defense and speed. He hit.310/.379/.472 with 6 HR and 19 stolen bases his senior season and is the Monarchs all-time leader in game splayed with 224.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock (Rangers) 3, Iowa 2

Round Rock rallied late to take the final game of the series from Iowa.

Hitting Recap: Cubs too a 1-0 lead in the first when CF John Andreoli (.236) singled, took second on a ground out, and scored on a RBI single from 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.301). LF Matt Murton (.323) smacked his second homer of the year over the let-field wall in the top of the 9th. Murton and Vogelbach both finished with two hits.

Pitching Chart: Clayton Richard made his second rehab appearance since the Cubs put the lefty on the DL with a blister. The 32-year-old struggled in his 22 games with the North Siders, posting a 7.30 ERA and a 2.19 WHIP in 21.1 innings after going 4-2 with a 3.83 ERA last year in 23 games, including three starts. Richard blanked the Express over four frames, allowing a hit and two walks. He fanned three, got six ground ball outs, and thew 62 pitches, 37 for strikes. Game score 61. Giovanni Soto fanned four in two shutout innings. Gerardo Concepcion  (1-2, 4.43 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss, allowing a run in the 7th and two more in the 8th.

I-Cubs Notes: No starter has been announced as the I-Cubs return home on Monday against Omaha. 

Southern League—AA—Jacksonville (Marlins) 9, Tennessee 2

Suns battered Smokes pitching for 15 hits and salvaged the final two games of the series.

Hitting Recap: Smokies scored both of their runs in the 6th when 1B Benjamin Carhart (.240) walked and scored on a double from Bijan Rademacher. A Chesny Young (.284) single moved Rademacher to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly from Ian Happ (.441). Rademacher finished 3-for-4 and SS Carlos Penalver (.204) added a single as the Smokies were held to five hits.

Pitching Chart: RH Tyler Skulina (3-7, 4.93 ERA) battled through four innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. Skulina threw 69 pitches, fanned three and had a game score of 42. RH Juan Paniagua surrendered four runs over two frames and RH R.J. Alvarez gave up his first runs since joining the Cubs, two in the 7th. RH Nick Sarianides worked a scoreless 8th.

Smokies News:  Jen-Ho Tseng (4-3, 2.85 ERA) is on the mound Monday night as the Smokies return home against Jackson....The Smokies activated RHP Nick Sarianides from the DL and placed RHP Josh Conway on the DL.

Carolina League—High A—Potomac (Nationals) 5, Myrtle Beach 3

Potomac scored two times in the first and hung on to beat Myrtle Beach and split the four-game series.

Hitting Recap: An RBI single by 2B David Bote (.339) and a two-run double from 3B Jason Vosler (.263) pulled the Pelicans to within 4-3 but they couldn’t get any closer. Vosler finished 2-for-4 and 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.226) added two hits.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (4-5, 2.76 ERA) gave up two runs in the first on three hits and walk but never got back to the mound as a rain delay of 90 minutes ended his night. James Pugliese got charged with two unearned runs over four frames while Tommy Thorpe gave up a run in three innings. Daury Torrez worked a scoreless 9th.

Pelicans News: Zach Hedges (6-6, 2.61 ERA) gets the start Monday night in Winston-Salem.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Lansing (Blue Jays) 3

South Bend scored four times in the bottom of the 8th to take the series from Lansing.

Hitting Recap: Cubs tied the game in the 2nd on a RBI single from 2B Sutton Whiting (.247), scoring RF Eddy Martinez (.244). Cubs were held scoreless until the 8th when C Tyler Alamo (.266) delivered a two-run double to knot the game at 3-3. Martinez followed with a RBI single and before the frame was over, DH Adonis Paula (.250) added a sacrifice fly. Martinez finished 3-for-4 while CF Donnie Dewees (.270) extended his hit streak to eight games with a single. Whiting and Alamo both finished with two hits and Paula had his hit streak snapped at eight games. 

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay retired 14 in a row at one point but came out on the short end of a pitcher’s dual, yielding three runs on six hits over seven innings. Alzolay gave up two solo homers to Max Pentecost, fanned three and threw 96 pitches, 61 for strikes. Game score 52. Dillon Maples made his South Bend debut after being assigned from Myrtle Beach on June 30. Maples worked a 1-2-3 8th, fanning a pair, to earn the win. RH Craig Brooks struckout the side in the 9th for his 5th save.

SB-Cubs News: Carson Sands (6-1, 3.25 ERA) gets the start in the series opener at Fort Wayne. 

Northwest League—Short-Season—Salem-Keizer (Giants) 3, Eugene 0

Four Volcanoes pitchers combined to blank the Ems.  

Hitting Recap: LF Kevonte Mitchell (.232) extended his hit streak to  10 games with a triple with one out in the 5th but was stranded. Mitchell finished 2-for-3 while CF Darryl Wilson (.180), SS Andruw Monasterio (.299) and 1B Chris Pieters (.327) all singled as the Ems were held to five hits.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Castillo (1-2.2.40 ERA) kept the Volcanoes in check the first three frames but three straight singles to start the 4th loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly plated a run and the fourth single of the inning made it 2-0. Another walk loaded the bases but Castillo worked out of the jam without any more damage. He finished the night with a line of 5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. M.T. Minacci gave up a run in three innings of relief and Scott Frazier worked a scoreless ninth.

Emeralds Notes: Ems send Pedro Silverio (1-0, 5.19 ERA) to the mound on Monday night at Everett....The Cubs have released Eugene outfielders Alex Bautista and Ricardo Marcano. Bautista was the Cubs 22nd round pick last June out of Lindsey Wilson College and spent his first pro year between Mesa and Eugene. Bautista played in Iowa and Tennessee before being assigned to Eugene in late June, appearing in two games for the Ems. In 52 minor league games, he hit. 247/.302/.362 with 3 HR and 22 RBI. Signed as part of the IFA 2011 class for $400,000, Marcano played five seasons in the Cubs system and never made it above Eugene—batting .260/.335/.375 with 6 HR and 95 RBI in 212 minor league games.

Arizona Rookie League—A’s 4, Cubs 3

A’s (7-4) downed the Cubs (6-5) for the second straight game.

Hitting Recap: 1B Kevin Zamudio (.250) and 3B Rafael Mejia (.273) knocked in runs as the Cubs were limited to six hits. RF Luis Ayala was on base twice with a single and a walk and DH Gustavo Polanco (.395) extended his hit streak to nine games.

Pitching Chart: Andin Diaz got the start and only went one inning, allowing a single to go along with two punchouts. LF Jack Leathersich had problems finding the strike zone, allowing a run on a hit and three walks in ? of an inning. Erling Moreno (1-1, 2.70 ERA) stranded the bases full in the second as he got a fly ball to center and Connor Myers, making his pro debut, doubled off the runner at second. Moreno retired the next eight hitters he faced but back-to-back extra base hits in the 5th and two more doubles in the 6th plated two runs. Moreno allowed a solo homer in the 7th and finished with a line of 5.2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. Eugenio Palma worked a scoreless 8th.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs

Cubs 1 (11-14) and Cubs 2 (16-8) had Sunday off along with the rest of the DSL.
