News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 5

Rough night on the diamond for the Cubs affiliates as Eugene and the Cubs 2 DSL squad were the only winners. RH Duane Underwood left his start early with an injury and the Cubs signed two more draft picks.

Zinn, Sweeney sign

According to reports, Cubs have agreed to terms with SS Delvin Zinn (23rd round) and RHP Nathan Sweeney (33rd round). Drafted by Cubs last year, Zinn transferred from Mississippi State and enrolled at Itawamba Junior College, where he hit .411/.464/.457 with 34 RBI and led the team with seven stolen bases. Sweeney prepped at Cherry Creek High School in Colorado and had a scholarship offer from Arizona. Reports have his fastball in the low 90s.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Omaha (Royals) 12, Iowa 4

The Storm Chasers turned a 3-2 deficit into a win with 10 unanswered runs to beat Iowa for the second staring night.

Hitting Recap: Tim Federowicz (3) and 2B Logan Watkins (1) both homered in the 2nd for a 2-0 lead. Cubs had 14 hits on the night but were just 2-for-12 with RISP and stranded 11. SS Munenori Kawasaki (.267), LF Mark Zagunis (.294), DH Matt Murton (.329), Federowicz (.320), and Kris Negron (.250) all had two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Drew Rucinski (5-7, 6.11 ERA) got roughed up for seven runs on 14 hits and walk. He fanned three and threw 103 pitches for a game score of 26. LH C.J. Riefenhauser allowed a run over 2.1 innings and RH Miguel Mejia surrendered four runs in the 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: Cubs have a day/night doubleheader on Wednesday. Rob Zastryzny is scheduled to start the opener and Mr. TBA will be going in the nightcap....RHP Jose Rosario has been promoted from AA Tennessee to Iowa. After missing the entire 2015 season with Tommy John surgery, Rosario started the year in Myrtle Beach and was promoted to Tennessee in late May. The 25-year-old recorded nine saves between the two levels and sports a fastball in the upper 90s.

Southern League—AA—Jackson (Mariners) 6, Tennessee 4—11 innings

Jackson (6-6, 52-30) scored two times in the 9th and then added two more in the 11th to down the Smokies (7-5, 35-47). 

Hitting Recap: Smokies grabbed a 3-0 lead in 1st on a bases loaded triple from RF Billy McKinney (.262), who finished 2-for-4 with a walk. CF Trey Martin (.152) added a RBI single in the 4th for a 4-2 lead. 2B Ian Happ (.452) was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a walk while 3B Chesny Young (.285) added two singles and scored in the first.

Pitching Chart: Not a good night for Duane Underwood He gave up a run over three innings and then left with an injury after facing two hitters in the 4th. He finished with a line of 3 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. Stephen Perakslis allowed one inherited runner to score and tossed three scoreless, allowing two hits and a walk. RH Joe Nathan worked another 1-2-3 inning, recording two punchouts. David Berg threw a scoreless 8th. James Farris got charged with the blown save (two runs in the 9th) and then took the loss surrendering two more in the 11th.

Smokies News: Paul Blackburn (6-2, 2.42 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach @ Winston-Salem (White Sox)—Rained Out

Tuesday night’s game was rained out and will be as a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Pelicans will start RHP Jonathan Martinez (4-5, 4.35 ERA) in the first game and RHP Jeremy Null (2-4, 4.66 ERA) gets the nod in the second game.

Midwest League—Low A—Fort Wayne (Padres) 3, South Bend 1

Fort Wayne’s Jonathan Pena knocked in all three runs as the Tin Caps beat the Cubs for the second straight night.

Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 1-0 led in the first on a two-out single from CF Donnie Dewees (.269) and RBI double from LF Eloy Jimenez (.330). Cubs only had two hits the rest of the night—a single from Jimenez and a base hit from Eddy Martinez (.245), who also walked twice.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (3-5, 3.52 ERA) gave up three runs on five hits and a walk over five innings. He fanned six, threw 79 pitches, and had a game score of 49. LH Kyle Twomey only allowed one hit over the final three frames, setting three down on strikes.

SB-Cubs News: Preston Morrison (8-3, 2.68 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 6, Everett (Mariners) 2

Wladimir Galindo and Chris Pieters smacked homers to lead Eugene over Everett.

Hitting Recap: 3B Wladimir Galindo (.238) got the Ems on the board in the second with his third homer, a solo blast. After singles from 1B Jose Paniagua (.286) and 2B Trent Giambrone (.200), RF Robert Garcia (.286) made it three straight hits with a RBI single and Giambrone scored on a throwing error by the catcher as the Ems took a 3-2 lead in the 2nd. CF Darryl Wilson (.185) ripped RBI double in the 4th and LF Chris Pieters (.333) added a two-run bomb in the 8th, his first homer. Paniagua and Garcia both had two hits.

Pitching Chart: RH Dylan Cease (1-0, 3.18 ERA) made his fourth start and tossed a season-high five innings, giving up two runs in the first on four straight singles and a sacrifice fly. Cease, who earned the win, no-hit the Aqua Sox over the final four frames, fanning three while walking two and plunking one. RH Daniel Lewis took over in the 6th and was greeted with back-to-back singles. After a strikeout, Lewis walked the bases full but a double play ground out ended the threat. The right-hander tossed a scoreless 7th and Alex Santana blanked the Aqua Sox over the final two frames.

Emeralds Notes: Bryan Hudson (1-0, 1.29 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night in Everett.

Arizona Rookie League—D-Backs 10, Cubs 9

Diamondbacks scored five runs in the bottom of the 8th to down rally past the Cubs.

Hitting Recap: 3B Kevin Zamudio (.239) knocked in three runs in the 3rd with a bases clearing triple and then scored on a throwing error on the play. CF Luis Ayala (.340) went 3-for-5 with a RBI. C Jhonny Pereda (.269) had two hits and 1B Gustavo Polanco (.390) went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one knocked in. SS Isaac Paredes (.226) was on base three times with a double and two walks.

Pitching Chart: Andry Rondon got the start and worked two innings, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks. Eugenio Palma held the D-Back to one run over three innings and Tanner Griggs fired a pair of shutout frames. Luis Aquino allowed five earned run in the 8th on four hits and two hit batters.

Dominican Summer League—Indians 6, Cubs 1 (4)

Indians (15-11) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and beat the Cubs (12-15). 

Hitting Recap: 3B Yonathan Perlaza (.206), CF Jose Gutierrez (.262), 2B Orian Nunez (260), and C Raymond Pena (.098) all had two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Andres Bonalde (1-3, 7.08 ERA) gave up four runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings. Edison Novas tossed two shutout frames and Fernando Calderon allowed two runs in the 8th.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (4), D-Backs 2 (3)

After the D-Backs scored in the top of the 14, the Cubs answered with two runs and the walk-off win.

Hitting Recap: LF Abraham Rodriguez (.356) ripped a single to center in the bottom of the 14 to score DH Richard Nunez (walk) and CF Yovanny Cuevas (single) to give the Cubs the walk-off win. Rodriguez finished 2-for-6 and SS Fidel Mejia (.355) had two hits and scored once.

Pitching Chart: Emilio Ferrebus only allowed one run over six innings on six hits and a walk. He fanned four and had a game score of 63. Fauris Guerrero got charged with a blown save, giving up a run in the 9th and went 4.1 innings, leaving with the bases loaded in the 11th. Luiz Escanio struckout two batters with the bases full and then tossed two more shutout frames before surrendering a run in the 14th. He ended the game with seven strikeouts.
