Omaha took both games in extra innings for the sweep.
Hitting Recap: GAME 1—Cubs tied the game in the third when they loaded the bases with three singles and 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.302) came home on 2B Logan Watkins’ (.266) ground out to second. Cubs made it 3-3 in the 5th on a two-run single from SS Munenori Kawasaki (.270), scoring 3B Kris Negron (.250) and LF John Andreoli (.236). CF Juan Perez (.257) and Kawasaki had two hits each.......GAME 2— Iowa had 15 hits in the nightcap as LF Matt Murton went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Andreoli, DH Daniel Vogelbach, 1b Tim Federowicz, and C Cael Brockmeyer all had two hits.
Pitching Chart: GAME 1— LH Rob Zastryzny (ERA) fanned a carer-high 10 over seven innings but surrendered a pair of homers that accounted for all three runs. He allowed six hits and a walk in the 97 pitch outing. Corey Black took over in the 8th and gave up a two-out RBI double..... GAME 2—RH Michael Wagner go the start and went four innings, getting charged with two runs, one earned. Giovanni Soto gave up three runs over two innings and Felix Pena followed up with two shutout innings. Armando Rivero allowed two runs in the 9th both unearned. Iowa committed four errors and only two of the seven runs were earned.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee vs Jackson (Mariners)
Wednesday night’s game was rained out and will be made up as a double header on Thursday night. Paul Blackburn (6-2, 2.42 ERA) and Brad Markey (6-4, 2.78 ERA) are expected to start....RHP Starling Peralta has been assigned to Tennessee from Iowa.
Carolina League—High A—Game 1—Myrtle Beach 7, Winston Salem (White Sox) 3; Game 2—Myrtle Beach, Winston-Salem
Pelican used a is-run 3rd to take the opener and then rallied past the Dash in the nightcap for the sweep.
Hitting Recap: GAME 1—Pelicans sent 10 hitters to the plate in the third and scored six times. Five straight hits opened the inning with SS Andrew Ely, LF Charcer Burks and CF Rashad Crawford all plating runs. Burks scored on a wild pitch and 3B Jason Vosler capped off the inning with a two-run double. Vosler plated another run in the 5th with his second double and a throwing error scored another run in the 7th. Burks and Crawford both finished with two hits. GAME 2—Andrew Ely’s two-run single in the 6th tied the game and then Yasiel Balaguert’s RBI single in the 7th gave the Pelicans the lead. Jeffrey Baez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for an insurance run. Ian Rice led off the 2nd with his 4th homer at Myrtle Beach and 13th overall.
Pitching Chart: GAME 1—RH Jonathan Martinez (5-5, 4.31 ERA) went the distance and only gave up three runs in the second. The Dash collected six hits and walked three times. Martinez threw 102 pitches, 61 for strikes, and fanned three......GAME 2—RH Jeremy Null got the start and went five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk. Daury Torrez (1-1, 4.14 ERA) worked a scoreless 6th and got the win while Ryan McNeil picked up his 11th save recording the final three outs.
Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (4-5, 2.76 ERA) is back on the mound on Thursday night at Winston-Salem. The right-hander got the start on July 3 but only threw an inning before a rain delay ended his night.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 12, Fort Wayne (Padres) 2
Preston Morrison fired a gem and the Cubs collected a season-high 19 hits in the win.
Hitting Recap: Cubs grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first when C P.J. Higgins (.277) singled, took third on a two-base throwing error on the pitcher when he threw the ball out of play before calling time. Higgins trotted home on a single from LF Donnie Dewees (.268). DH Eloy Jimenez(.332) then laced his 28th double of the year to knock in RBI 58. Cubs made it 4-0 in the second on a RBI single from CF Roberto Caro (.205), who then scored on a throwing error. The Cubs scored twice in the 4th, added four more runs in the 5th and two in the 8th. 3B Jesse Hodges had a pair of triples and three RBI while Bryant Flete aand Caro both plated two runs and had three hits. Every Cubs starter except Dewees had two hits.
Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison is on a roll and fired another gem. The Cubs 8th round pick last June made his fourth straight start of at least seven innings without allowing a run, blanking the Tin Cap for seven innings on three hits and a walk. The 22-year-old fanned nine, retired 13 straight at one point, and only threw 85 pitches for a game score of 83. Scott Effross couldn’t complete the shutout as two walks came around to score on a triple in the 8th. He worked a scoreless 9th.
SB-Cubs News: Casey Bloomquist (5-4, 2.51 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night in the series final at Fort Wayne
Northwest League—Short-Season—Everett (Mariners) 12, Eugene 1
Everett used a 14-hit attack to beat the Ems.
Hitting Recap: 2B Trent Giambrone was 1-for-3 with a RBI double as Eugene was held to six hits, the other five all singles.
Pitching Chart: Bryan Hudson (1-1, 3.18 ERA) only lasted three innings, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks. Michael Knighton (2.25 ERA) got tagged for three runs on five hits in two innings while RH Scott Frazier surrendered five runs in 1.1 innings. M.T. Minacci held the Aqua Sox scoreless over the final 1.2 frames.
Emeralds Notes: Jose Paulino (1-0, 0.56 ERA) makes his fourth start on Thursday night in Everett.....SS Andruw Monasterio (IFA14-Dominican Republic) has been promoted to South Bend after hitting .324/.355/.437 with a homer and 12 RBI in 17 games for the Ems.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs
Cubs (6-7) had the day off and face the Padres on Thursday.
Hitting Recap: C Gustavo Polanco (IFA14-Venezuela) spent his first pro season in the VSL (.282/.332/.333, 53 G, 0 HR, 23 RBI, 10 BB, 12 K), splitting time between first and catcher. The 19-year-old leads the Cubs with a .896 OPS and is tops in average at .390. RF Luis Ayala (IFA13-Venezuela) spent two season in the VSL and is off to a good start in his first season stateside, batting .340/.365/.440 with five stolen bases in 11 games. 1B Kevin Zamudio (IFA15-Mexico) is only hitting .239 over his first 13 pro games, but the 18-year-old leads the team in homers (2), RBI (11), slugging (.552) and total bases (24)
Pitching Chart: Back from Tommy John surgery, RH Erling Moreno (IFA13-Columbia) leads the Cubs with 16.2 innings, making one start and two long relief appearances. (1-1, 2.70 ERA, 2 BB, 16 K). RH Yapson Gomez (IFA12-Venezuela) leads the staff with 19 K in 16.1 innings, all in relief with a 0.73 WHIP and one save. RH Jose Albertos (IFA15-Mexico) was impressive in his pro debut on June 22 with seven strikeouts in four shutout innings but hasn’t seen the mound since.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (5), Indians (4)
Rafael Narea scored the winning run on a ground ball to second by Franklin Tineo in the bottom of the 11th.
Hitting Recap: SS Rafael Narea (.268) led off the 11th with a walk and took third on a single from 3B Orian Nunez (268). C Franklin Tineo (.143) then hit a grounder to second and Narea beat the throw home for the walk-off win. Jose Gutierrez (.269) and 2B Yonathan Perlaza (.219) both had two hits and Nunez finished 2-for-5 with 2 RBI.
Pitching Chart: Yunior Perez (IFA15-Dominican Republic) fanned seven over five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and didn’t issue a free pass. Elvis Diaz went three frames but gave up two runs, one in the 8th, and got charged with the blown save. Aneuris Rosario (1-1, 1.72) got the win, holding the Indians to one hit in three shutout innings.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (6), D-Backs 2 (0)
Faustino Carrera and Bryan Molina combined to blank the D-Backs.
Hitting Recap: RF Tony Rijo (.222) delivered a three-run triple in the Cubs four-run 4th. 3B Richard Nunez (.302) added a RBI in the 4th and 1B Fidel Matos (.190) drove in a run. Leadoff hitter CF Yovanny Cuevas (.225) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Nunez finished 2-for-2 with a double.
Pitching Chart: 17-year-old Faustino Carrera (IFA15-Mexico) continues to impress in his first pro season as the left-hander blanked the D-Backs for seven innings. Carrera (2-0, 0.70 ERA) allowed six hits, fanned five and recorded 10 ground ball outs. Bryan Molina got the final six outs, four on strikes.
