South Bend scored seven times in the bottom of the ninth as Donnie Dewees delivered the walk-off single, his second hit of the inning. Myrtle Beach’s Gleyber Torres continues to rake while Iowa, Eugene and both DSL teams flew the W.

Fowler will sit out all-star game

Dexter Fowler’s rehab stint in South Bend lasted one game as he’s on his way to San Diego for the All-Star festivities but won’t play in the game. He was scheduled to play center for South Bend on Saturday but those plans changed. Recovering from a hamstring injury, Fowler went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks on Friday night. He jogged to second on a base hit after a walk and took it easy down the line when he grounded into a double play in the 6th. It was reported there was no setbacks with his hamstring and he decided not to play in the all-star game because he wanted to get ready for the second half.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 8, Colorado Spring (Brewers) 5

Cubs snapped a five game losing streak behind an eight inning two-run homer from  Tim Federowicz

Hitting Recap: Pinch-hitter Tim Federowicz (.368) smacked a two-run homer in the top of the 8th to give the I-Cubs the 6-5 lead and extend his hit streak to 13 games. C Cael Brockmeyer (.225) and RF Mark Zagunis (.279) both hit solo homers. 1B David Freitas (.325) went 3-for-5 while 2B Logan Watkins (.279) and SS Kris Negron (.249) both had two hits.

Pitching Chart: RH Michael Wagner made the start and went two innings, allowing two runs on four hits and walk. LH Giovanni Soto had his best outing in Iowa, working three perfect innings with six strikeouts. RH Felix Pena got charged with three runs over two frames but got credit for the win. RH Armando Rivero worked a scoreless 8th and RH Jose Rosario earned his first AAA save with a 1-2-3 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: Drew Rucinski (5-7, 6.11 ERA) gets the ball on Sunday afternoon in Colorado Springs.....Cubs have promoted RHP Tommy Nance from Eugene to Iowa. Taylor Davis has also completed his rehab stint in Eugene and returned to Iowa.

Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Twins) 1, Tennessee 0

 A solo homer in the 9th proved to be the difference in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Smokies out-hit the Lookouts 9-to-8 but were 0-for-8 with RISP and stranded 10. RF Billy McKinney went 3-for-4 with a double while 2B Daniel Lockhart and DH Bijan Rademacher had two hits each.

Pitching Chart: RH Brad Markey tossed six innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits while fanning three in the 102-pitch outing. Markey hit a pair of batters and had a game score of 69. Stephen Perakslis fired two shutout frames, throwing 25 pitches, 17 for strikes. RH Joe Nathan  (0-1, 3.18 ERA) allowed a solo homer to lead off the ninth and then got two outs before James Farris came in for the final out.

Smokies News: Tyler Skulina (3-7, 4.93 ERA) has allowed 17 runs over his last four starts (14 IP) and makes his 17th start Sunday evening.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 8, Wilmington (Royals) 7

Gleyber Torres knocked in three runs to lead Myrtle Beach past Wilmington to even the series.

Hitting Recap: SS Gleyber Torres (.269) went 2-for-3, scored twice, stole two bases and knocked in three runs.  The 20-year-old is hitting .367/.412/.533 over his last 10 games. CF Rashad Crawford (.243) doubled, tripled, scored twice and plated a run while 3B Jason Vosler (.269), RF Jeffrey Baez (.226) and C Tyler Pearson (.167) all had two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks in five innings. He threw 84 pitches and had a game score of 28. Tommy Thorpe (4-4, 3.99 ERA) worked a scoreless 6th and got credit for the win. Daury Torrez gave up one run in two innings and Ryan McNeil fanned two in the 9th for his 12th save, and his 10th straight appearance with a save.

Pelicans News: Zach Hedges (6-7, 298 ERA) takes the mound for the 15th time on Sunday night in Wilmington.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 12, Bowling Green (Rays) 11

South Bend scored seven times in the bottom of the 9th for the miracle comeback as Donnie Dewees sent everyone home winners with a walk-off single.

Hitting Recap: South Bend had just allowed four runs in the top of the 9th and trailed 11-5. C P.J. Higgins (.278) led off the 9th with a single and scored on a double from LF Donnie Dewees (.274). RF Eddy Martinez (.265) followed with a RBI double, and a hit-by-pitch and a single by 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.316) loaded the bases. 3B Josh Silver  (.227) singled home a run and an error by the pitcher kept the bases loaded and cut the lead to 11-9. SS Andruw Monasterio (.250) tied the game with a two-run single, and after Higgins walked to re-load the bases, Dewees lined a single to right for the improbable walk-off win. Dewees finished the game 3-for-5 with two scored and two knocked in while Martinez had three hits (two doubles) and drove in three. 1B Alberto Mineo had two RBI in his first game for South Bend and CF Roberto Caro (.250) went 3-for-5.

Pitching Chart: Justin Steele returned to the mound after being sent back to extended spring training on June 3 (3-5, 6.17 ERA, 9 GS). After working a scoreless first, Steele got in trouble in the second and left after 50 pitches. A walk, a hit batter and a single loaded the bases and two sacrifice flies plated two runs. LH Tyler Peitzmeier allowed two inherited runners to score on a single and a throwing error before recording the final out of the 2nd. Hot Rods used four hits and two South Bend errors to score three more off Peitzmeier in the 3rd. Adbert Alzolay kept South Bend in the game with five shutout innings but didn’t retire a batter in the 9th as the first five reached, four scoring. Alzolay finished with a line of 5 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4K. RH Scott Effross (5-0, 2.95 ERA) allowed one inherited runner to score but recorded the final three outs of the 9th and got credit for the win.

SB-Cubs News: Carson Sands (6-2, 3.72 ERA) makes his 13th start and his first since giving up a season-high eight hits on a July 4 loss to Fort Wayne.....Flurry of roster moves for the South Bend Cubs. OF Eloy Jimenez was put on the temporary inactive list so he could participate in the Futures Game on Sunday. RHP James Norwood was also placed on the inactive list. LHP Justin Steele, who started the season in the South Bend rotation, and C Alberto Mineo have both been assigned to South Bend. RHP Tanner Griggs has been sent to South Bend and placed on the DL. 

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 5, Hillsboro (D-Backs) 2

Jesus Castillo fanned 10 as Eugene upped their division lead to six games.

Hitting Recap: RF Robert Garcia (.284) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while LF Chris Pieters (.324) gave the Ems the lead for good in the 1st with a two-run triple. SS Yeiler Peguero singled, walked and knocked in a run, and C Marcus Mastrobuoni (.212) doubled, walked and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: RH Jesus Castillo (2-2, 2.61 ERA) reached double digits in strikeouts for the second time in four starts, punching out 10 Hops. Castillo allowed two runs on four hits and walk in 5.2 innings. He was charged with two balks and had a game score of 62. Daniel Lewis worked 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and Jared Cheek got the final six outs for his fourth save. 

Emeralds Notes: Pedro Silverio (1-0, 5.68 ERA) gets the ball on Sunday night.

Arizona Rookie League—Rangers 6, Cubs 0

Two Rangers pitchers blanked the Cubs on three hits.

Hitting Recap: Only three hits for the Cubs, a double by DH Samuel Tidaback (.300) and singles from C Gustavo Polanco (.418) and 3B Rafael Mejia (.212).

Pitching Chart: Nice outing for 19-year-old Erling Moreno (1-2, 3.22 ERA) as he took the loss but fanned a career-high eight hitters in 5.2 innings. The right-handed Columbian allowed three runs on five hits and a walk for a game score of 61. Yapson Gomez got charged with three runs (one earned) over the final 2.1 frames.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (7), Mets 1 (1)

Riger Fernandez and two relievers held the Mets to three hits.

Hitting Recap: SS Rafael Narea had a career-high four hits and tied his career-high with three RBI to lead the 13-hit attack. 1B Luis Hidalgo ripped a pair of doubles, stole three bases, and scored three times as part of a three-hit day. RF Jonathan Sierra (.232) was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk. Sierra (IFA15-Dominican Republic) has walked 20 times in 30 games and sports a .382 OBP. CF Jose Gutierrez (.264) went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Pitching Chart: LH Riger Fernandez (IFA14-Venezuela) won his first game in six starts, tossing five solid innings with two strikeouts. Fernandez (1-3, 3.22 ERA) got charged with an unearned run and allowed two hits and three walks—coaxing eight ground ball outs for a game score of 59. Jose Mac Donna fanned two and gave up a hit over three shutout relief innings and Aneuris Rosario worked 1 2-3 9th.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (6), Dodgers 1 (5)

Fidel Mejia’s RBI single in the top of the 7th was the difference in the ball game.

Hitting Recap: Big day at the plate for SS Fidel Mejia (IFA14-Dominican Republic) as he had two hits and knock din three runs, including the game-winner. Mejia (.343) also swiped two bases (7). LF Abraham Rodriguez (.340) upped his hitting streak to 13 games with a RBI single in the 1st and also added a sacrifice fly in the three-run 5th. The first-year 17-year-old from Panama has recorded hits in 24 of his last 25 games, including an 11-game hit streak.  SS Aramis Ademan (.241) was on base four times with two hits and two walks, scoring three times and stealing two bases (7).

Pitching Chart: Wilfre Delgado (IFA15-Venezuela) made his first pro start and didn’t figure in the decision, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks. Maikel Aguiar (IFA15-Venezuela) walked three in his inning sof work, allowing two runs, one eared. Luiz Escanio (2-0, 0.82 ERA) fanned eight over the final four shutout innings. Escanio (IFA12-Dominican Republic) gave up four hits, walked one and has 18 K in 11 IP in four relief appearances.
