Eloy Jimenez introduced himself to the baseball world on Sunday night as the 19-year-old South Bend outfielder was one of the stars of the Futures Game.

South Bend outfielder Eloy Jimenez may have ben one of the youngest players in Sunday night’s Futures Game but that didn’t stop the Dominican Republic native from having one of the best games. Jimenez put the World Team on the board with a RBI double in the 6th and then launched a three-run bomb in the top of the 9th. He smacked a hard one hopper back to the mound in his other at-bat

Fans also got a look at his defensive skills and somebody ended up with a pair of shades. 

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Colorado Springs (Brewers) 7, Iowa 4

Iowa heads to the all-star break with a loss to Colorado Springs.

Hitting Recap: After seven scoreless, the Cubs got on the board in the 8th on a two-run single from 1B David Freitas (.321). SS Kris Negron (.251) added a sac fly in the 8th and LF Mark Zagunis (.339) drove home a run with a fly out in the 9th. CF John Andreoli (.239) and Matt Murton (.339) had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Drew Rucinski (5-8, 5.83 ERA) allowed two runs (one earned) over six innings, limiting the Sky Sox to four hits and three walks while fanning two. Game score of 58 in the 91-pitch outing. LH Gerardo Concepcion gave up two runs in the 7th and Tommy Nance got tagged for three runs in the 8th in his AAA debut.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa starts their three-day all-star break on Monday. 1B Daniel Vogelbach and RHP Armando Rivero were selected to play for the PCL All-Stars on July 13 in Charlotte. The I-Cubs return to action on Thursday with four games with Las Vegas and four more with Salt Lake at Principal Park.......The Cubs sent 3B Jeimer Candelario back to Iowa and promoted SS Munenori Kawasaki

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 5, Chattanooga (Twins) 4

Bijan Rademacher’s solo homer in the bottom of the 6th gave the Smokies the lead for good.

Hitting Recap: RF Bijan Rademacher (.302) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored including a solo homer in the 6th to give Tennessee the lead. He also robbed a two-run homer in the top of the 6th. CF Trey Martin (.190) went 3-for-3 and slugged his first AA homer, a solo shot in the 5th. Martin finished with two knocked in while SS Carlos Penalver (.205) and 3B Chesny Young (.287) both aded RBI.

Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina got the start and went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks. He fanned three and threw 91 pitches. Starling Peralta got charged for a blown save and ended up getting the win, giving up one run in 1.1 innings. James Farris worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while David Berg pitched the 9th for his second save.

Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng (5-3, 2.98 ERA) takes the mound on Monday night against Chattanooga. CF Jacob Hannemann hurt his thumb in Jacksonville on July 1 and was placed on the DL on July 7.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 9, Wilmington (Royals) 1

Zach Hedges fanned a career-high eight hitters and blanked the Blue Rocks for six innings.

Hitting Recap: 2B David Bote (.295) tripled, homered, and knocked in two runs while 3B Jason Vosler (.269) doubled and had three RBI. LF Charcer Burks (.232) and CF Rashad Crawford (.246) both had two hits, and Ian Rice  (.267) was 1-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (7-7, 2.78 ERA) fired a gem, striking out a career-high eight hitters while blanking the Blue Rocks for six innings. The right-hander allowed three hits, recorded eight ground ball outs and had a game score of 78 in the 88-pitch outing, 66 for strikes. Craig Brooks gave up a run on two walks in the 7th and James Pugliese worked the final two shutout innings.

Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (5-5, 4.31 ERA) toes the rubber on Monday night.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 10, Bowling Green (Rays) 6

South Bend rallied past Bowling Green for the second straight game. 

Hitting Recap: Cubs trailed 4-0 but scored five times in the bottom of the 4th and tallied runs in each of the next four frames. RF Eddy Martinez (.269) smacked a pair of doubles (19) and drove in two runs (46), extending his hit streak to 10 games. DH P.J. Higgins (.284) went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles (20), scoring twice and driving one in. 2B Carlos Sepulveda, 3B Jesse Hodges, and C Alberto Mineo all had two hits. LF Donnie Dewees (.274) upped his hit streak to 15 games with a single and a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Carson Sands (7-2, 4.29 ERA) went five-plus innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks, including a pair of solo homers in the 5th. The lefty fanned two, hit a batter, and threw 87 pitches, 54 for strikes. Tanner Griggs made his MWL debut and was impressive, retiring the first six hitters he faced The Cubs 12-round pick last June gave up a leadoff single in the 8th and promptly got a double play grounder, ending his day after 37 pitches, 24 for strikes. LH John Williamson retired the only hitter he faced to end the 8th and RH Dillon Maples worked a 1-2-3 9th.

SB-Cubs News: Ryan Kellogg (3-5, 3.52 ERA) takes the mound on Monday night against Bowling Green.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Hillsboro (D-Backs) 10, Eugene 2

Hillsboro evened the series with a win over Eugene.

Hitting Recap: Only six hits for Eugene, three from SS Yeiler Peguero, who doubled and scored once. RF Robert Garcia (.286) added a  RBI triple and DH Jose Paniagua (.280) went 1-for-4 with a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Pedro Silverio (1-1, 6.23 ERA) got the start and fanned seven over 4.2 innings but allowed four runs on four walks and four hits, including a homer. Michael Knighton fanned three in two scoreless and Wyatt Short made his pro debut with a 1-2-3 8th. Scott Frazier walked the two batters he faced in the 9th and M.T. Minacci gave up three hits and a walk, allowing two inherited runners and four more to score in the 9th.

Emeralds Notes: Dylan Cease (1-0, 3.18 ERA) is scheduled to start on Monday night against the Hops in the series finale.

Arizona Rookie League—Giants 12, Cubs 3

Giants used a six-run 4th to down the Cubs.

Hitting Recap: Cubs were kept off the board the first six innings. CF Luis Ayala (.354) went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI while 2B Jhonny Bethencourt (.194) doubled, tripled, scored once and knocked in a run. 1B Gustavo Polanco (.424) had two singles and is hitting .436 over his last 10 games (17-for-39).

Pitching Chart: Junior Marte allowed eight runs, six earned, on five hits and two walks in 3.2 innings. Andin Diaz got charged with three unearned runs in one inning. Jose Leidenz fanned two in 1.1 scoreless frames and LH Jack Leathersich struckout the side in the 7th. Andry Rondon worked the final two innings, allowing a run while fanning five.

Dominican Summer League

Cubs 1 (15-16) and Cubs 2 (20-10), along with the rest of the DSL had Sunday off. Cubs 1 are 6.5 games behind Rangers 1 (21-9) in the North Division while Cubs 2 and Mariners are tied for first.
