News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 11

Rashad Crawford hit a three-run homer to lead Myrtle Beach to a win while Victor Caratini’s three-run bomb held the Smokies to victory.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa

I-Cubs are in the midst of their all-star break. 1B Daniel Vogelbach and RHP Armando Rivero were selected to play for the PCL All-Stars on Wednesday in Charlotte. The I-Cubs return to action on Thursday with four games with Las Vegas and four more with Salt Lake at Principal Park

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 7, Chattanooga (Twins) 6

Smokies came out on top of a see-saw game that saw 21 hits.

Hitting Recap: C Victor Caratini (.293) went 2-for-3 and slugged a three-run homer in the 5th to give the Smokies a 6-4 lead. SS Daniel Lockhart (.250) had two singles and scored twice while CF Trey Martin (.210) was 2-for-4 with a RBI. RF Billy McKinney (.271) had two hits and knocked in a run.

Pitching Chart: RH Jen-Ho Tseng only lasted five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk. Tseng fanned four, got six ground ball outs and threw 85 pitches. Juan Paniagua fanned two over two innings but surrendered a two-run homer. Joe Nathan worked a 1-2-3 eighth and David Garner closed the door in the 9th for his first AA save. Garner got some help as a double with a runner on first turned into an out at home as McKinney got to the ball quickly, hit 1B Gioskar Amaya with the relay, who fired home in plenty of time to get the runner.

Smokies News: LH Clayton Richard makes his second rehab start with the Smokies and his 4th overall......Smokies have placed RHP Duane Underwood on the 7-day DL.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 5, Wilmington (Royals) 1

Rashad Crawford launched a three-run homer to help the Pelicans to the win.

Hitting Recap: CF Rashad Crawford (.249) hit a three-run homer in the 4th and scored another run in the sixth after stealing a base and scoring on RBI double from SS Gleyber Torres (.270), 2-for-5. LF Charcer Burks (.232) added a RBI single and 2B Andrew Ely (.172) drew two walks and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: RH Jonathan Martinez (6-5, 4.18 ERA)  fanned eight over five innings as a solo homer provided the only run. Martinez allowed four hits, walked one, and threw 80 pitches for a game score of 59. Jordan Minch only faced two hitters in the 6th, fanning the leadoff off hitter and issuing a walk, before leaving with the trainer after throwing a wild pitch. RH Pedro Araujo fanned four over 2.2 frames and Ryan McNeil fanned two in a scoreless 9th.

Pelicans News: Myrtle Beach has Tuesday off and host Frederick for a three game series beginning on Wednesday.

Midwest League—Low A—Bowling Green (Rays) 10, South Bend 3

Hot Rods pounded Cubs pitching for 14 hits and scored eight times off the bullpen.

Hitting Recap: Cubs were kept off the board for the first six innings and drew a pair of bases loaded walks in the 7th to score twice. Bryant Flete doubled home Josh Silver in the 8th. Donnie Dewees, 15 games, and Eddy Martinez, 10 games, had their hit streaks stopped.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (3-6, 3.49 ERA) gave up two runs in six innings but got saddled with the loss. Greyfer Eregua only got two outs in the 7th, allowing six runs to score. Scott Effross allowed two runs in the 9th.

SB-Cubs News: Cubs have Tuesday off and head to Clinton for the a three-game set.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Hillsboro (D-Backs) 7, Eugene 4

Hillsboro pounded out 13 hits and scored on all four Eugene pitchers.

Hitting Recap: Only four hits for Eugene but they did draw seven walks. LF Kevonte Mitchell (.203) doubled and scored twice while RF Connor Myers (.250) was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. CF Darryl Wilson (.163) ripped a two-run double in the Eugene’s three-run 2nd.

Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease fanned seven but left in the 5th, allowing seven hits and two runs over 4.2 frames. A broken bat RBI single scored a run in the first and a one-out single scored in the Hops’ three-run 5th.  RHP Jordan Brink made his 2016 NWL debut but gave up a RBI double, a walk, and a two-run single. Brink finished with a line of 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB 1 K. Enrique De Los Rio took the loss as two walks, a single and a double play scored the go-ahead run in the 7th. RH Mark Malave gave up two runs over the final two innings.

Emeralds Notes: C Samuel Tidaback, OF Connor Myers,  RHP Chad Hockin and RHP Jordan Brink have been promoted to Eugene. 

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Cubs had Monday off.

Cubs Notes: Four pitchers for the Mesa Cubs have gone on the 60-day DL, never a good sign. RHP Jose Albertos (IFA15-Mexico), RHP Jesus Camargo (IFA14-Mexico), RHP Tyler Peyton (2016 Draft-29th round), and Stephen Ridings (2016 draft-8th round) have all gone on the DL.

Dominican Summer League—Mets (1) 12, Cubs 1 (4)

Mets (15-16) scored nine unanswered run to down the Cubs (15-17).

Hitting Recap: DH Henderson Perez (IFA15-VZ, .148) went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI (4). SS Rafael Narea (IFA-14-VZ, .299) was on base three times with two walks and a single, scoring twice. 2B Yonathan Perlaza (IFA15-VZ, .231) and 1B Luis Hidalgo (IFA13-VZ, .220) added RBI. 

Pitching Chart: LH Andres Bonalde (IFA14-VZ, 1-4, 8.74 ERA) surrendered six runs over 2.1 innings on seven hits and a walk. Edison Novas (IFA15-DR) gave up three runs over 2.1 frames and Miguel Estevez (FA14-DR) got charged with three earned runs over 2.2 innings. Freddy Tineo (IFA14-VZ) got the final two outs.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (11), Dodgers I (4)

Cubs (21-10) used an eight-run 7th to down the Dodgers (17-14).

Hitting Recap: CF Yovanny Cuevas (IFA14-DR, .253) went 3-for-5 with two RBI (15) and two runs scored while C Miguel Amaya (IFA15-Pan., .260) added three singles and scored once. 3B Luis Diaz (IFA15-DR, .240), DH Fidel Mejia (IFA14-DR, .348), and 2B Ronaldo Lopez (IFA14-DR, .086) all had two hits. LF Abraham Rodriguez (IFA15-Pan., 333) extended his hit streak to 14 games with a single and scored twice. 

Pitching Chart: Emilio Ferrebus (IFA14-VZ) went five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits.  The 18-year-old right-hander (0-3, 4.85 ERA) fanned four in his sixth start. Fauris Guerrero (IFA14-DR) got the win in relief, tossing three shutout frames. Guerrero (3-1, 2.66 ERA), 19, fanned one and gave up two hits. Bryan Molina (IFA14-VZ) got the final three outs, one on strikes. The 21-year-old right-hander has not allowed an earned run in 12.1 innings although he’s given up 10 hits and nine walks.
