Paulino named NWL Pitcher of Week
Eugene left-hander Jose Paulino was named the Northwest League Pitcher of the Week for July 4-10. Paulino made one start last week, tossing six innings of one-hit shutout ball against Everett, walking one and fanning four. The 21-year-old is in his fifth season with Cubs and in four starts for the Emeralds is 2-0 with a 0.41 ERA, 0.64 WHIP, and 22 K in 22 IP.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa
I-Cubs are in the midst of their all-star break. 1B Daniel Vogelbach and RHP Armando Rivero were selected to play for the PCL All-Stars on Wednesday in Charlotte. The I-Cubs return to action on Thursday with four games with Las Vegas (Mets) and four more with Salt Lake (Angels) at Principal Park.
Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Twins) 4, Tennessee 0
Three Lookouts pitchers combined to blank the Smokies.
Hitting Recap: Only five hits for the Smokies, two from 3B Chesny Young who had two singles and walked once. Kelly Dugan went 2-for-3 and 2B Daniel Lockhart singled. DH Ian Happ was 0-for-4 and is one of this last 12.
Pitching Chart: It was pitchers looking to help the Cubs in the second half of the season night in Tennessee. LH Clayton Richard made his fourth rehab start and second in Tennessee, throwing 43 pitches over three innings. Richard gave up two runs on four hits with a strikeout. After appearing in games in two games for Mesa, LH Brian Matusz made his Smokies debut, tossing his longest outing since 2012. The left-hander finished with a line of 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K. He threw 63 pitches, 41 for strikes. Nick Sarianides worked 1.2 shutout innings, fanning two, and extended his scoreless streak to 6.2 frames. R.J. Alvarez started the 9th but left after 31 pitches, allowing a run on two hits and a walk. Stephen Perakslis got the final out.
Smokies News: RH Paul Blackburn (6-3, 2.83 ERA) takes the mound on Wednesday at noon for his 17th start and third against Chattanooga.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach has Tuesday off and host Frederick for a three-game series beginning on Wednesday. RH Jeremy Null gets the call to the mound for the Pelicans in the opener. The Pelicans (10-9) hold a half-game lead over first-half camp Salem but 4th place Carolina only trails by two games in the Southern Division.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend
South Bend had Tuesday off and head west on a six-game road trip to Clinton and Kane County. Preston Morrison (9-3, 2.44 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night in Clinton. South Bend (13-6), the first half champs, trail Lansing by one game for the second half title.
Emeralds (17-8) had the day off and return to action on Wednesday night when they send Bryan Hudson (1-1, 3.18 ERA) to the mound at Tri-City. Eugene holds a five-game lead over second place Hillsboro and is six up on Salem-Keizer.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs
Cubs (8-9) had the day off and face the White Sox (6-11) on Wednesday night.
Dominican Summer League—Rangers 1 (9), Cubs 1 (8)
Cubs scored eight times in the 7th to erase a 7-0 lead but the Rangers scored twice in the 8th for the win.
Hitting Recap: Cubs were held to four hits over the first six frames but tallied eight runs in the 7th. A walk, hit by pitch, and an two-run throwing error plated the first four runs. A sac fly from 3B Franklin Tineo (IFA13-DR, .153) and a RBI single from SS Yonathan Perlaza (IFA15-DR, .229) made it 7-6. RF Jonathan Sierra (IFA15-.236) tied the game with a RBI single, and then Perlaza and Sierra pulled off a double steal with Perlaza taking home.
Pitching Chart: RH Yunior Perez (IFA15-DR) made his sixth start and went three innings, allowing five runs on four hits and five walks. Perez, 17, came into the game with 3 BB and 20 K in 21.1 IP. Moises Ramirez (IFA12-DR) surrendered two runs over four innings on six hits and a walk. Elvis Diaz (FA15-DR) took the loss, getting charged with two unearned runs in the 8th. Cubs made six errors and only five of the runs were earned.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (9), Rojos 4
Cubs (22-10) scored four times in the 2nd and added four more in the 9th to down the Reds (9-23)
Hitting Recap: 2B Fidel Mejia (IFA14-DR, .359) stayed red-hot with a three-hit game and knocked in a run while CF Yovanny Cuevas (IFA14-DR, .250) smacked his 3rd homer, a three-run shot in the 9th. 3B Luis Diaz (IFA15-DR) went 2-for-5, scored twice and plated two. Every start had at least one hit except LF Abraham Rodriguez (IFA15-Panama, .324) who had his 14-game hit streak snapped, but added a RBI. Also knocking in runs was DH Ronaldo Lopez (IFA14-DR) and SS Aramis Ademan (IFA14-DR).
Pitching Chart: Faustino Carrera (IFA15-Mexico, 3-0) fired six strong innings and lowered his ERA to 0.57 in his sixth start. The 5-foot-10 lefty allowed eight hits, fanned three and got charged with two unearned runs. Maikel Aguiar blanked the Reds for two innings, fanning two, while Yan De La Cruz pitched the ninth, surrounding two-runs.
