News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 13

Charcer Burks delivered a two-run single in the 7th to gave the Pelicans the lead and also added a solo homer in the 5-4 win one Frederick. Both DSL teams won.

Vogelbach starts All-Star game

1B Daniel Vogelbach saw all-star action for the third time in his career, getting the start for the PCL all-stars. Vogelbach went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. RHP Armando Rivero faced two hitters, getting a strikeout and giving up a solo homer in the 8th. The International League hit three homers and beat the PCL 4-2.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa

Iowa had Wednesday off and face Las Vegas in the first of four games on Thursday night.

Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Twins) 11, Tennessee 1

The Lookouts won the rubber game of the five-game series pounding Smokies pitching for 14 hits.

Hitting Recap: Smokes scored their only run in the 2nd when DH Bijan Rademacher led off with a single and eventually scored on Carlos Penalver’s two-out RBI single. Penalver finished 2-for-3 and 2B Ian Happ (.364) added two single.

Pitching Chart: Another rough outing for Paul Blackburn as the right-hander allowed eight runs on nine hits and one walks over four innings. Blackburn surrendered a three-run homer, fanned five, and threw 78 pitches, 50 for strikes. Starling Peralta blanked the Lookouts over four frames, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out four.  RH David Berg got tagged for three runs in the 9th on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. 

Smokies News: RH Brad Markey (6-4, 2.59 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night as the Smokies open up a five-game series at Montgomery. 

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 5, Frederick (Orioles) 4

Frederick got twice as many hits as Myrtle Beach but the Pelicans pulled out the win.

Hitting Recap: Five hits from Myrtle Beach—two from LF Charcer Burks (.236) and three from 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.227). Burks smacked a solo homer in the first and added a two-run single in the 7th to give the Pelicans the lead for good. Balaguert singled twice and launched a two-run homer (12) in the 2nd.  

Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null got the start and hung four zeros but et eye scored four times in the second, including a pair of solo homers. Null allowed seven hits and fanned one. RH James Pugliese (2-3, 3.66 ERA) tossed three shutout innings with five strikeouts the right-hander allowed two hits and a walk in the 43-pitch outing. RH Ryan McNeil picked up his 13th save with a scoreless inning

Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (4-6, 3.12 ERA) gets the start Thursday night against Frederick. 

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend @ Clinton (Mariners)

Game was rained out and the two teams will play a double header on Thursday. RH Preston Morrison is set to take the ball in the opener while LH Justin Steele and RH Casey Bloomquist will piggy-back the second game. 

Northwest League—Short-Season—Tri-City (Padres) 3, Eugene 2

Tri-City scored twice in the bottom of the 5th and held on for the win.

Hitting Recap: Ems scored both of their runs in the 5th on a RBI single by 2B Trent Giambrone and a RBI double from RH Robert Garcia. SS Yeiler Peguero added two hits.

Pitching Chart: Bryan Hudson got the start and was charged with all three runs, allowing six hits while weakling three. The lefty fanned three. M.T. Minacci fanned two in 2.1 innings 

Emeralds Notes: NWL Pitcher of the Week Jose Paulino, (2-0, 0.41 ERA) takes the mound on Thursday night at Tri-City.

Arizona Rookie League—White Sox 4, Cubs 2

Jacob Cooper’s two-run homer in the 3rd helped the White Sox to the win.

Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st on a one-out double by RF Luis Ayala and RBI single from 2B Zack Short. CF Zach Davis, the Cubs 32nd round pick in June out of Texas Tech, made his pro debut on Wednesday night, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and a RBI groundout in the 8th.

Pitching Chart: RH Oscar De La Cruz made his 2016 debut after rehabbing an arm injury, working three innings. The 21-year-old got allowed three runs on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Andin Diaz fanned three in two frames but got charged with an unearned run. Yapson Gomez had a solid outing, blanking the  White Sox on one hit over the final three innings while fanning five.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (9), Rangers 1 (8)

Cubs (16-18) overcame a five-run first and beat the Rangers (23-10).

Hitting Recap: 2B Yonathan Perlaza (.250) had two doubles, a single, and scored three times while DH Jose Rojas (.286) went 1-for-3 with a solo homer (1) and two RBI. SS Rafael Narea (.304) and 3B Orian Nunez (.283) were both 2-for-5 with 2 RBI. 

Pitching Chart: LH Brailyn Marquez only lated two innings, allowed six hits and a walk that led to six runs, only one earned. Freddy Tineo (2-1, 3.79) fired four shutout frames, allowing three hits while fanning two. Aneuris Rosario earned his third save despite getting charged with two runs  (one earned) over two innings. 

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (8), Rojos (4)

Cubs (23-10) grabbed an early 7-2 lead and cruised to the win over the Reds (9-24).

Hitting Recap: Cubs collected 13 hits as SS Ronaldo Lopez (.136) went 3-for-4 while DH Aramis Ademan (.247), 1B Miguel Amaya (.264), LF Yovanny Cuevas (.264) and C Daniel Diaz (.200) all had two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia fanned seven over 4.2 innings but didn’t figure in the decision. The right-hander surrendered a pair of runs on seven hits and three walks. Omar Ventura (1-0, 6.16 ERA) fanned four in 3.1 one-hit innings. Sucre Valdez gave up two unearned runs in the 9th as the Cubs committed two errors.
