News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 15

Iowa, Eugene and Mesa posted the only wins of the night.

I’ve spent the past three days in Clinton with the South Bend Cubs and interviewed players and coaches so look for those stories in the coming days. 

Roster moves

Cubs made some roster moves at the big league level. C David Ross was taken off the 7-day disabled list and LHP Clayton Richard was activated from the 15-ay DL. RH Trevor Cahill has been placed on the 15-day DL with patellar tendinitis in his right knee and IF Munenori Kawasaki has been optioned back to Iowa. RHP Joel Peralta has cleared waivers and declared for free agency.

RHP Joe Nathan and LHP Brian Matusz were assigned to the I-Cubs. Nathan had been rehabbing with Tennessee (7G, 6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB 6 K) and Matusz was in Mesa and the Smokies (3 G, 8 IP, 3H 1 R, 3 BB, 12 K) after signing a free agent deal. IF Vimael Machin has been placed on the 7-day disabled list. RHP Michael Wagner and C David Freitas have been assigned from Iowa to Tennessee. 

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 7, Las Vegas (Mets) 2

Iowa evened the series even through they got out-hit. 

Hitting Recap: 1B Daniel Vogelbach extended his hit streak to eight games, going 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI. CF Juan Perez was on-base four times with a walk, a double, a triple and catcher’s interference—scoring twice with one RBI. C Tim Federowicz was 2-for-4 and drove in a pair.

Pitching Chart: Jake Buchanan (8-5, 4.61 ERA) got the win as the righty scattered six hits and a walk over seven innings, allowing two earned runs. Buchanan threw 97 pitches and fanned four. Corey Black and Jose Rosario pitched a scoreless frame.

I-Cubs Notes: Pierce Johnson (1-4, 7.24 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night. 

Southern League—AA—Montgomery (Rays) 12, Tennessee 0

Smokies dropped their fourth straight as they only managed three hits and committed five errors in the shutout. 

Hitting Recap: Singles by C Gioskar Amaya, 1B David Freitas and CF Trey Martin was the offense for the Smokies. They drew three walks and went 0-for-3 with RISP.

Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina only got one out as the Biscuits scored five times in the first and chased the right-hander after 43 pitches. Juan Paniagua fanned six over three innings but got charged with four runs. R.J. Alvarez allowed an inherited runner to score and gave up two more before getting the final two outs of the 4th. Alvarez, claimed off waivers from the A’s in mid-June, has allowed 10 hits and seven runs over his last four games (4.1 IP). James Farris and David Garner both threw a scoreless innings and 1B/OF Kelly Dugan got the final three outs but his defense let him down as an error by SS Carlos Penalver led to an unearned run. 

Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng (5-3, 3.34 ERA) toes the rubber of the Smokies on Saturday night in Montgomery. 

Carolina League—High A— Frederick (Orioles) 8, Myrtle Beach 7—11 innings

Myrtle Beach let a 7-4 lead slip away as the Keys homered in the 9th and scored in the 11th.

Hitting Recap: The top of the order did most of the damage as SS Gleyber Torres (.265) and DH Ian Rice (.260) both knocked in two runs. LF Charcer Burks (.232) went 1-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored while CF Rashad Crawford (.248) singled twice, scored two runs, added a RBI and stole a base. 

Pitching Chart: Erick Leal got the start and threw 78 pitches over five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk. Craig Brooks (1.2 IP) and Pedro Araujo (1.1 IP) both surrendered a run while Ryan McNeil yielded a solo homer in the 9th for his second blown save. Tommy Thorpe (4-6, 4.10 ERA) took the loss when the winning run scored on a grounder to first as the Pelicans were unable to turn the double play to get out of the inning. 

Pelicans News: Jake Stinnett (7-3, 4.23 ERA) takes the hill Saturday night in Winston-Salem.

Midwest League—Low A—Clinton (Mariners) 4, South Bend 2

Clinton used a four-run fifth to take the series against South Bend.

Hitting Recap: South Bend scored both of their runs in the fourth on a two-run triple by Bryant Flete, plating SS Andruw Monasterio (.200) and 1B Josh Silver (.240). RF Eloy Jimenez (.331) went 1-for-3 but left the game in the 6th inning with a leg injury. Cubs were held to five hits and fanned 16 times. 

Pitching Chart: Kyle Miller got the start the threw the ball well, blanking the L-Kings for four innings before running into trouble in the fifth as Clinton scored four times, three earned. Miller finished with a line of 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. LF John Williamson fanned two in two scoreless frames and Tanner Griggs struckout the side in the 9th in his second game since joining South Bend.

SB-Cubs News: Adbert Alzolay takes the mound for the Cubs as they return to Kane County for the first time since moving the affiliate to South Bend.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 9, Tri-City (Padres) 7

Eugene (19-9) overcame a 6-0 deficit to down the Dust Devils (15-13).

Hitting Recap: Every starter except 1B Chris Pieters (.284) had a hit and he walked twice and scored. C Marcus Mastrobuoni went 2-for-5 with three RBI and SS Yeiler Peguero (.278) had two hits, including a triple, and knocked in three. 3B Wladimir Galindo (.233) ripped a pair of triples and scored twice while LF Robert Garcia (.301), 2B Trent Giambrone (.239), and RF Connor Myers (.308) all had two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Manuel Rondon gave up five unearned runs in the first and finished with a line of 4 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. Eugene’s bullpen was perfect. Jordan Brink fanned three in two frames, Scott Frazier struckout a pair in the 7th and got credit for the win, and Mark Malave retired the final six hitters of the game, three on strikes,  for his third save.

Emeralds Notes: Jesus Castillo (2-2, 2.61 ERA) gets the start for the Ems at Tri-City on Saturday night.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 5, Royals 4

Cubs jumped out to a 5-0 lead and hung on to down the Royals.

Hitting Recap: SS Isaac Paredes (.286) was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a RBI while LF Ruben Reyes (.262) had two hits, scored twice and added a RBI. 3B Jhonny Bethencourt (.194), DH Zack Short (.326) and 2B Edgar Rondon (.188) all drove in runs. 

Pitching Chart: RH Erling Moreno (2-2, 2.54 ERA) tossed six shutout innings, holding the Royals to four hits in the gem. The 19-year-old Columbian struckout six and had a game score of 74. Andry Rondon gave up an unearned run in the 8th, his second inning of work. Luis Aquino allowed three runs in the 9th but got the final out to preserve the win.

Dominican Summer League—Pirates (5), Cubs 1 (1)

Cubs (16-20) allowed four runs in the 7th and fell to the Pirates (14-22).

Hitting Recap: Only five hits for the Cubs as they scored in the 2nd on a RBI double from 3B Franklin Tineo (.171). DH Henderson Perez (.164) was 2-for-4 and C Raymond Pena (.101) added a double. 

Pitching Chart: Good outing for Riger Fernandez as the 18-year-old left-hander went six innings, surrendering an unearned run while giving up just two hits and four walks. Fernando Calderon took the loss, yielding four runs in the 7th on two hits and three walks.

Cubs Notes: The DSL will have its all-star game on Sunday at the Mariners DSL facility. The teams have Saturday off.

Dominican Summer League—Orioles 2 (5), Cubs 2 (0)

Cubs only managed five hits in the shutout loss.

Hitting Recap: CF Yovanny Cuevas (.271) had two hits while 3B Fidel Mejia (.358), LF Abraham Rodriguez (.325)  and 1B Richard Nunez (.271) all singled. 

Pitching Chart: Wilfre Delgado worked two scoreless innings but ran into trouble in the third getting charged with four runs (two earned) on a walk, a hit, and two hit batters. Ivan Medina allowed three inherited runners to score and gave up another run on two hits. Maikel Aguiar worked three scoreless with five strikeouts while Fauris Guerrero and Luiz Escanio both threw a shutout inning.
