News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 17

Trey Martin hit a two-run homer to give the Smokies the lead and finished with a career-high four RBI. South Bend and Eugene continued their winning ways.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Las Vegas (Mets) 6, Iowa 2

Las Vegas scored four runs in the top of the 9th to take the series.

Hitting Recap: Only four hits for the Cubs—a solo homer  (5) from LF Mark Zagunis (.275) and a RBI single from 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.310). RF Juan Perez (.257) doubled and scored.

Pitching Chart: Brian Matusz tossed five innings as he tries to work his way back to a big league roster. The left-hander threw 75 pitches and finished with a line of 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB 5 K. Corey Black blanked the 51s in the sixth and Joe Nathan walked one in a scoreless seventh. Felix Pena took the loss, surrendering four runs in the 9th on four hits and two walks. Armando Rivero got the final out.

I-Cubs Notes: No starter has been named for Monday night as Salt Lake comes to town.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 6, Montgomery (Rays) 4

Trey Martin’s two-run homer in the eighth proved to be the difference.

Hitting Recap: CF Trey Martin (.207) matched his career-high with four RBI and smoked a two-run homer to give the Smokies a 5-3 lead in the 8th. Smokies were blanked over the first five innings but scored three times in the sixth. Singles by 2B Ian Happ (.333) and C David Freitas (.276), and walk to DH Gioskar Amaya (.136) with two out loaded the bases. SS Carlos Penalver (.207) struckout swinging but the ball went to the backstop, allowing Happ to score and Penalver to reach first. Martin followed with a two-run single for a 3-1 lead. David Freitas added a RBI single in the 9th.  Happ, Freitas, Penalver and Martin all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Michael Wagner made the start and went four innings, allowing a solo homer, one of two hits while fanning five. He threw 64 pitches and had a game score of 56. Wagner has been an organizational road warrior this season, logging 44.2 innings in 15 games (9 starts) for all four full-season affiliates. Starling Peralta retired the first six hitters he faced but the Biscuits opened the 7th with a triple and single to cut the lead to 3-2. Another single put runners on the corners and a double play grounder tied the game. Peralta (4-1, 3.70 ERA) got the win and finished with a lien of 3 IP, 4 H 2 ER, 0 B, 0 K. David Garner earned his second save, getting the final six outs but gave up a run in the 8th on two hits and a walk.

Smokies News:  Paul Blackburn (6-4, 3.36 ERA) gets the start on Monday afternoon in Montgomery. 

Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem (White Sox) 7, Myrtle Beach 2

Dash collected 11 hits off the Pelicans to even the series.

Hitting Recap: Only five hits for Myrtle Beach. 1B David Bote (.295) went 2-for-3 with a RBI while 2B Andrew Ely  (.169) slugged his first Carolina League homer. 

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (7-8, 2.89 ERA) gave up eight hits and two walks that the Dash turned into five runs, three earned, over six innings. Hedges threw 96 pitches, 65 for strikes, and had a game score of 37. Craig Brooks surrendered two runs in the 7th and C Tyler Pearson made his pro debut on the mound with a scoreless 8th.

Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (6-5, 4.18 ERA) takes the hill on Monday night. 

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 8, Kane County (D-Backs) 5

Cubs scored five times in the third and hung on to down Kane County for the second straight game.

Hitting Recap: Cubs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when CF Donnie Dewees (.281) singled with two outs, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a RBI single from C Tyler Alamo (.258). The Cubs tallied five runs in the 3rd, the first one coming when 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.320) singled and scored on 1B P.J. Higgins (.281) double (22). RF Eddy Martinez (.263) scored Higgins on a sacrifice fly and SS Bryant Flete (.220) capped off the inning with a three-run homer (2). LF Roberto Caro (.221) ripped a two-run double in the 8th. Dewees finished 3-for-4 while Sepulveda and Higgins had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Carson Sands gave up a leadoff double and then retired the next six hitters but never made it out of the third, losing control of the strike zone. A hit batter, a single and walk loaded the bases with no outs, and a single plated the first run. Sands then walked in two runs and after a pair of strikeouts, walked in another. He finished with a line of 2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K.  Greyfer Eregua (3-4, 4.72 ERA) got the final out of the third, stranding three inherited runners, and then fired three shutout frames, fanning three while allowing three hits and two walks. RH James Norwood saw his first action since June 10 due to a month on the DL and another week on the inactive list. Norwood fanned two in a scoreless 7th. Scott Effross got the final six outs, three on strikes.

SB-Cubs News: Ryan Kellogg (3-6, 3.49 ERA) gets the start in the series finale on Monday at noon.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 7, HIllsboro (D-Backs) 6

Eugene tallied three runs in the top of the 5th and hung on for the win.

Hitting Recap: Eugene took a 1-0 lead in first on a double by RF Connor Myers (.313) and a infield single from 1B Chris Pieters (.290). A pair of bases loaded walks plated two runs in the 4th and Ems added three in the 5th on a sac fly from C Samuel Tidaback and a two-run single from DH Michael Foster (.120). Tidaback added another sac fly in the 7th and Foster finished the night with three RBI. LF Kevonte Mitchell (.223) went 2-for-4, scored three times and swiped two base. SS Zack Short went 1-for-5 with two runs scored in the NWL debut.

Pitching Chart: RH Pedro Silverio went four innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks. RH Michael Knighton got the win, working three innings while surrendering a run on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts. RH Chad Hockin got charged with an unearned run in the 8th and LH Wyatt Short earned his first pro save, fanning two in a scoreless 9th.

Emeralds Notes: Eugene has not named a starter for Monday night but Dylan Cease is up next in the rotation.....If Zack Short has been promoted to Eugene from Mesa. The Cubs 17th round pick last month hit .318/.500/.386 in 14 games in the Arizona Rookie League. 

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Cubs had the day off and get back to work on Monday against the A’s. 

Dominican Summer League—All-Star Game—AL 4,  NL 3

The American league All-Star knocked off the NL squad 4-3. Three Cubs prospects played for the NL squad. 2B Fidel Mejia got the start and went 0-for-2. LF Abraham Rodriguez started and was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. LHP Brailyn Marquez pitched a scoreless third inning, working around a hit and a walk.
