Pacific Coast League—AAA—Salt Lake (Angels) 12, Iowa 6
Salt Lake scored three times in the first and never trailed in the series opener at Principal Park.
Hitting Recap: DH Daniel Vogelbach (.318) went 4-for-5 and smacked his 16th homer but it wasn’t enough as Cubs got out hit 14-to-12. CF John Andreoli (.239) had two hits, including a triple and plated three runs while L Matt Murton (.323) was 1-for-5 with two RBI. 2B Kris Negron (.246) had two hits and SS Munenori Kawasaki (.271) scored twice and reached on two walks.
Pitching Chart: Tough night on the mound for the Cubs. Trevor Cahill made his first rehab start in Iowa and threw 57 pitches, 30 for strikes. Cahill surrendered three runs on four hits and three walks over 2.2 innings. Miguel Mejia (1-1, 6.82 ERA) allowed five runs over 3.1 frames, the Bees scored two times off Giovanni Soto in two innings, and Jose Rosario only got two outs in the 9th before two more scored. C.J. Riefenhauser got the final out, stranding two inherited runners.
I-Cubs Notes: Drew Rucinski (5-8, 5.83 ERA) gets the start on Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park....Cubs have announced that outfielders Dexter Fowler and Jorge Soler will be Des Moines starting tomorrow for their rehab assignments.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 4, Montgomery (Rays) 2
Smokies tied the game with two runs in the 8th and won it with a pair in the 9th to take the final two games of the series.
Hitting Recap: Tennessee was blanked for seven innings but broke through in the 8th on a two-run double from CF Trey Martin (.212), plating LF Kelly Dugan (single) and SS Carlos Penalver (double). Smokies took a 3-2 lead in the ninth on a Victor Caratini RBI single and added an insurance run on a throwing error by the pitcher. C Benjamin Carhart went 2-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn didn't last long enough to get the win but he did turn in a fine outing, fanning seven while allowing an unearned run on two hits and three walks in six frames. Blackburn threw 95 pitches, 58 for strikes, and had a game score of 70. R.J. Alvarez got charged with an unearned run in the 7th and Nick Sarianides worked a 1-2-3 eighth with a pair of punchouts. James Farris got three fly ball outs in the 9th for his second save.
Smokies News: Smokies have Tuesday off and return to action at home against Mississippi Braves on Wednesday.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 15, Winston-Salem (White Sox) 2
Pelicans took aim on Dash pitching for 18 hits in the win that featured six runs in the second and third.
Hitting Recap: SS Gleyber Torres (.275) was a homer shy of the cycle as he finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, three runs scored and three knocked in. The nine total bases matches a career-high he set last year vs. Peoria when he had five hits and was a triple shy of the cycle. 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.227) plated four runs with a pair of doubles and CF Jeffrey Baez (.235) was on base six times as he went 4-for-4 with a double, two walks, a stolen base (28) and three runs. LF Charcer Burks (.241) had three hits, scored twice, and knocked in two. 2B Andrew Ely (.173) went 1-for-4 with two RBI and 3B David Bote (.306) went 2-for-3 with three walks and two runs scored.
Pitching Chart: Jonathan Martinez (7-5, 4.01 ERA) took advantage of the lead as the right-hander threw 99 pitches, 61 for strikes over six innings. Martinez allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and a with four strikeouts. Game score 62. Tommy Thorpe tossed two scoreless frames and Daury Torrez fanned two in the ninth.
Pelicans News: Jeremy Null (2-4, 4.94 ERA) gets the start with a noon first pitch in the series finale at Winston-Salem.
Midwest League—Low A—Kane County (D-Backs) 5, South Bend 2
Kane County salvaged the final game of the series with a 13-hit attack.
Hitting Recap: Bryant Flete was the hitting star of South Bend. Flete delivered a RBI single in the 4th and then launched his second homer of the series, a solo blast to left-center in the 7th. 2B Carlos Sepulveda, C Tyler Alamo and DH Jesse Hodges singled.
Pitching Chart: Cougars collected nine hits off Ryan Kellogg (3-7, 3.68 ERA) and tallied four runs, scoring in four of the five innings the left-hander worked. Kellogg fanned four, threw 75 pitches, and had a wild pitch. LH Tyler Peitzmeier worked two scoreless frames and Dillon Maples allowed a run in the 8th.
SB-Cubs News: South Bend has Tuesday off and host Burlington on Wednesday night.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 6, HIllsboro (D-Backs) 4
Eugene (22-9) scored four times in the sixth and hung on for the win over second-place Hillsboro (15-16).
Hitting Recap: Kevonte Mitchell knocked in a pair of runs in the Ems four-run 6th and finished 1-for-4 with three strikeouts. 2B Trent Giambrone was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored while LF Robert Garcia (.300) and 1B Chris Pieters (.299) had two hits apiece.
Pitching Chart: Oscar De La Cruz made his second start of the year and first for Eugene. The 21-year-old fanned seven over four innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits and a walk. De La Cruz (IFA12-DR) hit two batters threw a wild pitch and had a game score of 62. M.T. Minacci retired the first seven hitters he faced before a single with one out in the 7th. A walk put two runners on but Minacci got out of the jam. Alex Santana didn’t get an out in the 8th, allowing the first five hitters to reach in the 8th on a walk, error, single, hit-by-pitch, walk. Mark Malave allowed one inherited runner to score but worked out of the mess and worked a shutout ninth for his 4th save.
Emeralds Notes: LHP Bryan Hudson is scheduled to get the ball on Tuesday night against Hillsboro......RHP Oscar De La Cruz, who went 6-3 with a 2.84 ERA last year in Eugene and started the year rehabbing a strained UCL, was promoted to Eugene. De La Cruz made one start in Mesa, allowing three runs over three innings with 2 K.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 3, A’s 2
Cubs scored the winning run in the bottom of the 7th on a RBI single from Jhonny Pereda and six Cubs pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts.
Hitting Recap: C Jhonny Pereda stroked a RBI single to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead and then delivered the go-ahead RBI with another base knock in the bottom of the 7th. LF Yohan Matos (.282) singled home a run in the second and 3B Kevin Zamudio (.237) doubled, walked and scored twice.
Pitching Chart: Lot of arms used in this one for Mesa. LH Jack Leathersich fanned two in a scoreless first and Junior Marte added three more scoreless frames, striking out seven while allowing two hits. Jose Leidenz got tagged for two runs in the fifth on two hits and a walk. Dakota Mekkes, the Cubs 10th round pick from Michigan State, made his pro debut and fanned two in a perfect 6th. LHP Marc Huberman (18th round-USC) saw his first action as a pro and fanned two in a scoreless 7th, earning the win. Luis Aquino fanned the side in the 8th and added two more punchouts in the 9th for his third save.
Dominican Summer League—Indians 6, Cubs 1 (5)—11 innings
Cubs rallied for four runs to send the game into extra innings but the Indians walked-off with the win.
Hitting Recap: Cubs cut the lead to 5-3 in the 8th when CF Jose Gutierrez (.261) tripled and scored on a groundout, and 2B Yonathan Perlaza (.248) slugged his second homer of the season, a solo shot. In the 9th, SS Rafael Narea (.291) and LF Jose Jules (.206) singled to lead off the frames and both scored on a single by 1B Luis Hidalgo (.224). Gutierrez finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored while Perlaza went 2-for-5 with a double.
Pitching Chart: Andres Bonalde got the start and went five innings, yielding three runs on three hits and five walks. He fanned three and had a game score of 48. Edison Novas surrendered two runs over two frames and Freddy Tineo tossed three scoreless. Aneuris Rosario (1-2, 2.33 ERA) took the loss as a double, a ground out that advance the runner, and a sacrifice fly ended the game.
Dominican Summer League—Twins 5, Cubs 2 (2)
Twins blanked the Cubs over the first seven innings for the win.
Hitting Recap: Cubs actually outhit the Twins 7-to-5 but were just 1-for-12 with RISP and left nine stranded. 1B Fidel Matos (.226) went 3-for-4 with a RBI and SS Aramis Ademan (.248) had two singles. DH Fidel Mejia (.357) went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.
Pitching Chart: Emilio Ferrebus (0-4, 438 ERA) only allowed one eared run but three more scored on five hits and three walks over five innings. The lefty fanned one and had a game score of 43. Omar Ventura surrendered one run over three frames and Bryan Molina worked a scoreless ninth.
