Smokies had day off and host Mississippi on Wednesday for the first of five games. Tyler Skulina (3-8, 5.27 ERA) gets the start for Tennessee.
Smokies News: LHP Jack Leathersich tweeted that he’s on his way to join the Smokies. Signed as a free agent after having Tommy John surgery last year, the 26-year-old appeared in 17 games for the Mets last season (0-1, 2.31 ERA, 11.2 IP, 7 BB, 14 K) before the injury ended 2015. Leathersich has been rehabbing in Mesa and pitched in 10 games in the Arizona Rookie League, fanning 16 in eight innings while issuing three walks with a 1.13 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. With big league experience, Leathersich is another arm that could help the Cubs down the stretch and in the playoffs.
Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem (White Sox) 13, Myrtle Beach 7
Dash took the series finale with a 14-hit attack.
Hitting Recap: Pelicans erased a 4-0 lead with three runs in the third and another run in the fourth. CF Rashad Crawford (.255), 2B David Bote (.314) and 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.236) all singled to leadoff the third with Balaguert’s hit plating Crawford. A throwing error scored another run on a ground ball to third and Jeffrey Baez lifted a sac fly to make it 4-3. Crawford singled with one out in the fourth, took third on a throwing error and scored on a RBI single from Balaguert. C Tyler Pearson (.147) added a sac fly in the sixth and the Pelican added two more in the eighth on a 3B Jason Vosler (.257) ground out and a sac fly from Baez. Balaguert finished 4-for-4, Crawford was 3-for-5 with three scored, and Bote and SS Andrew Ely (.188) had two hits each.
Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null didn’t make it out of the first inning as he allowed four unearned runs on two hits and two walks. Null left in the middle of facing his eighth hitter but the trainer was not on the mound when he departed. RH James Pugliese (2-4, 3.63 ERA) kept the Dash off the board for 2.2 innings, fanning three and leaving with two runners on. Pedro Araujo allowed both of those runners to score and the Dash added four more off the right-hander before he got the final two outs of the fourth. Craig Brooks allowed a run over two innings, Daniel Lewis worked a scoreless seventh, and Ryan McNeil surrendered two runs in the eighth.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend
South Bend had Tuesday off and send Justin Steele (3-5, 6.35 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday as they host Burlington for a three-game series.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Hillsboro (D-Backs) 8, Eugene 2
Hillsboro put Eugene’s first-half celebration on hold for another day with a win. The Ems magic number is one with six games to go.
Hitting Recap: Ems grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer from 1B Chris Pieters (.297), scoring RF RF Robert Garcia (.298), who led off with a double. Only one hit for the Ems the rest of the night, a sinlge from 2B Yeiler Peguero (.264).
Pitching Chart: The development of Bryan Hudson continued on Tuesday night as the 19-year-old struggled to find the strike zone and walked five over the first three innings. However, he was able to pitch out of trouble and only one of the walks scored as the Hops only hit plated a run with two outs in the second. An error, a single and his sixth walk loaded the bases in the fourth and a double cleared the bases on a 1-2 count. Hudson finished the night with a line of 4 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 2 K. Andin Diaz got tagged for two runs in the fifth, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. Enrique De Los Rio and Scott Frazier both worked two innings, allowing a run. Eugene pitching issued 17 walks.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 7, Dodgers 6
Cubs scored three times in the top of the 8th to rally for the win.
Hitting Recap: A wild pitch, a throwing error and a sacrifice fly plated three runs in the 8th as the Cubs only hit in the frame was a leadoff single by SS Isaac Paredes (.309), who finished 4-for-5 with a RBI, a career-high in hits. Luis Ayala (.345) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and 1B Kevin Zamudio (.234) doubled and knocked in two. C Michael Cruz (.234) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
Pitching Chart: Andry Rondon (IFA13-DR) made his second start and allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over four innings. The 20-year-old right-hander fanned three and has 21 K in 15.2 innings. RH Jed Carter, the Cubs 15th round pick, made his pro debut on Tuesday night, facing four hitters. He only worked two-thirds of an innings, allowing a hit and a walk, while recording his first pro strikeout. RH Matt Swarmer came in and got the final out of the fifth on strikes, stranding two inherited runners. He got two more outs in the sixth but left after getting charged with a run on two hits. LH Yapson Gomez (2-1, 2.88 ERA) tossed the final 3.1 frames, getting the win while allowing two unearned runs with five strikeouts.
Dominican Summer League—Indians 8, Cubs 1 (4)
Indians (18-19) scored early and collected 10 hits of CbUs (16-22) pitching.

Dominican Summer League—Twins 4, Cubs 2 (2)
Cubs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first but the Twins scored the game’s next four runs.
Hitting Recap: Cubs scored both their runs in the first. SS Aramis Ademan (IFA15-DR, .248) tripled and scored on 3B Fidel Mejia’s sacrifice fly. C Miguel Amaya (IFA15-Panama, .264) singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error. Amaya finished 3-for-4 and 2B Ronaldo Lopez (IFA14-DR.150) had two hits and drew a walk.
Pitching Chart: Faustino Carrera (IFA15-Mexico) turned in a quality outing, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings. The 17-year-old left-hander fanned three and recorded eight ground ball outs for a game score of 57. Carrera (3-0, 0.96 ERA) has only allowed two earned runs over his first six starts. Fauris Guerrero (3-2, 3.04 ERA) took the loss as he gave up two runs over two innings.
