News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 22

Carlos Sepulveda delivered a walk-off single to give South Bend the win while Tennessee pitching combined for 15 punchouts in their victory.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa @ Memphis (Cardinals)—Postponed

Cubs and Redbirds game was canceled because Memphis was stuck in Dallas due to a canceled flight. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 5:05 p.m. CST. Brian Matusz gets the ball in game one and Trevor Cahill will make his second rehab start for Iowa in the nightcap. The Cubs placed the right-hander on the DL July 15 with right knee patellar tendinitis

I-Cubs Notes: Chicago Cubs have optioned RHP Spencer Patton back to Iowa. With the trade for Mike Montgomery and the expected addition of Joe Nathan to the Cubs 25-man roster, Patton was sent backdown to Iowa but you can expect him back in Chicago by the end of the year. OF Albert Almora was optioned to Iowa as Dexter Fowler was taken off the DL.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 2, Mississippi (Braves) 1

Five Smokies pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts as Tennessee won for the first time in the series.

Hitting Recap: Smokies took a 1-0 lead in the first when 2B Ian Happ (.313) singled with two outs and scored on a double from C David Freitas (.293). LF Kelly Dugan’s first homer in nearly a month and seventh of the season made it 2-0 in the fifth. Happ finished 2-for-4. OF Chris Coghlan went 1-for-3 with a single in his first rehab game.

Pitching Chart: Michael Wagner has spent the season living out of a suitcase but he looked at home on Friday night in Tennessee as the right-hander blanked the Braves for five innings on two hits and two walks. Wagner fanned seven in the 84-pitch gem. R.J. Alvarez continues to struggle as the hard-throwing right-hander gave up a run in the sixth on a hit and a walk. LH Jack Leathersich worked around a pair of hits in a scoreless seventh in his AA debut for the Cubs. RH James Farris struckout the side in the eighth and David Garner put two down on strikes in the ninth for his third save.

Smokies News: Brad Markey (6-5, 2.71 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night for his 17th start.....OFs Jorge Soler and Chris Coghlan have been assigned to Tennessee for their rehabs. LHP Jack Leathersich was activated from the DL.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Wilmington (Royals) 3

Myrtle Beach evened the series with Wilmington with a 12-hit attack.

Hitting Recap: LF Charcer Burks (.246) had three hits, including a pair of doubles, scored once and knocked in a run. 2B David Bote (.318) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Ian Rice doubled in a run. C Tyler Pearson (.184) went 2-for-4 with a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (5-6, 3.32 ERA) threw 82 pitches over six innings and the Blue Rocks scored three times on five hits and two walks. Clifton fanned six and had a game score of 59. Daury Torrez worked a 1-2-3 seventh and retired both hitters he faced in the eighth. Ryan McNeil got the final four outs for his 14th save.

Pelicans News: Zach Hedges (7-8, 2.89 ERA) toes the rubber on Saturday night......South Bend 3B Jesse Hodges was promoted to Myrtle Beach and 3B Jason Vosler was placed on the DL with a thumb injury. Hodges went 0-for-4 in his Carolina League debut.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 4, Burlington (Angles) 3—10 innings

South Bend snapped a three-game losing skid with their ninth walk-off win.

Hitting Recap: 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.321) ripped a single past the second baseman to score pinch-runner Andruw Monasterio and give the Cubs the extra-inning win. CF Donnie Dewees (.275), RF Eddy Martinez (.261) and LF Roberto Caro (.231) all knocked in runs with Caro, Sepulveda and 1B P.J. Higgins (.280) all finishing with two hits.

Pitching Chart: Kyle Miller surrendered three runs over six innings, throwing 85 pitches, 64 for strikes. Miller allowed eight hits, didn’t walk anyone and had a game score of 54.  LH John Williamson worked two scoreless and RH Scott Effross (6-0, 2.93 ERA) added two more shutout frames for the bullpen. Eddy Martinez kept the Bees off the board in the 10th with a throw to nail a runner at home, his third assist of the series.

SB-Cubs News: Adbert Alzolay (6-4, 4.41 ERA) looks to follow up on his solid outing last time out at Kane County as the right-hander faces Peoria on Saturday night..... 3B Jesse Hodges was promoted to Myrtle Beach and C Alberto Mineo was activated from the DL.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 8, Vancouver (Blue Jays) 5

Ems tied the game with three runs in the 9th and won it with three more in the 11th.

Hitting Recap: Emeralds got on the board in the seventh when 3B Wladimir Galindo (.224) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from RF Kevonte Mitchell (.220). Two walks and an error loaded the bases and CF Darryl Wilson (.179) plated a run with a fly ball to left. In the ninth, singles by SS Zack Short (263) and 1B Jose Paniagua (.268) opened the inning and C Tyler Payne (.255) followed with a RBI double. Wilson cut the lead to one with a sacrifice fly, and after a runner got thrown out at home, LF Chris Pieters (.300) tied the game with a single. In the 11th, DH Connor Myers (.276) gave the Ems the lead on a sac fly after a single by C Marcus Mastrobuoni (.208) and double from Wilson. Pieters added another RBI single and a throwing error plated the third run. Pieters and Wilson both finished with three hits.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Castillo blanked the Canadians for five innings as the right-hander scattered three hits and walked three. Castillo fanned three and threw 79 pitches, 47 for strikes. Game score 61. Appearing in his third game since the draft, RH Chad Hockin (6th round) allowed four runs on a walk and four hits, including a pair of doubles. Andin Diaz gave up a run over two innings and Enrique De Los Rio (4-4, 4.71 ERA) got the win with two scoreless frames. Jared Cheek worked around a walk and fanned two for his seventh save.

Emeralds Notes: Michael Knighton (2-0, 2.01 ERA) makes his first pro start on Saturday night in Vancouver.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Cubs (14-11) have Friday off and face the White Sox (10-15) on Saturday.

Dominican Summer League— Mets 1 (8), Cubs 1 (1)

Cubs only managed four hits and dropped their seventh straight.

Hitting Recap: Cubs only run of the game scored in the fifth when LF Jose Jules (.214) singled and scored on a RBI double from 3B Orian Nunez (.275). 2B Yonathan Perlaza (.266) was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching Chart: Brailyn Marquez (3-1, 1.74 ERA) took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks. Marquez fanned five and had a game score of 51. Juan Rengifo pitched the final three frames and gave up four runs on six hits, one a homer

Cubs Notes: The two teams play again on Saturday.

Dominican Summer League—D-Backs 2 (6), Cubs 2 (4)

D-Backs scored twice in the seventh and it proved to be the difference.

Hitting Recap: Cubs out-hit the D-Backs 11-4 but stranded 11 runners. 1B Fidel Matos (.221) went 1-for-3 with two RBI while 3B Luis Diaz (.234), DH Miguel Amaya (.281) and C Richard Nunez (.280) all had two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Carlos Ocampo only lasted three innings and didn’t give up a hit but walked four and got charged with two earned runs. Wilfre Delgado (0-2, 4.80 ERA) took the loss and the right-hander allowed four runs in 3.1 innings. Fauris Guerrero kept the D-backs off the board the final 2.2 innings.

Cubs Notes: The two teams play again on Saturday.
