News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 23

Cubs draft picks Tyson Miller and Bailey Clark made their pro debut Saturday night in Mesa’s win and Eugene keeps rolling the NWL. And a pile of rehabs including Jorge Soler, Chris Coghlan, Trevor Cahill, Brian Matusz and Josh Conway.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Game 1—Memphis (Cardinals) 6, Iowa 4; Game 2—Memphis 5, Iowa 2

Red Birds used a three-run walk-off homer to take the opener and  a three-run fourth to take the nightcap.

Hitting Recap: GAME 1—CF John Andreoli (.249) had three hits, scored twice and added a RBI while RF Mark Zagunis (.272) was 3-for-4 with a walk. C Tim Federowicz (.333) plated a pair of runs and 3B Jeimer Candelario(.302) went 1-for-3 with a double, sac fly and a walk......GAME 2—Andreoli added three more hits in the second game and scored once. 3B Juan Perez (.265) went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Zagunis and C Taylor Davis (.228) go credit for RBI.

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Brian Matusz made his second start in Iowa and fanned the side in a scoreless first but needed 28 pitches to get through the inning. The let-hander ended up throwing 85 pithes on the night, working 4.1 shutout innings. He allowed four hits, walked two and recorded six strikeouts for a game score of 60. Corey Black got the final two outs of the fifth but got tagged for three runs in the sixth on four hits and a walk. C.J. Riefenhauser went 1.2 shutout frames and Spencer Patton fired a scoreless 7th in his return to Iowa. Gerardo Concepcion gave up three hits in the 8th, the last one leaving the park and ending the game after the Cubs took a 4-3 lead in the top of the inning......GAME 2— Trevor Cahill made his second rehab start and went four innings, allowing three runs on nine hits. He fanned five and threw 73 pitches. LH Rob Zastryzny saw his first action since July 14 when he left the game with an injury. Zastryzny worked two innings, allowing two runs in the sixth.

I-Cubs Notes: Drew Rucinski (5-9, 5.78 ERA) is scheduled to get the start in Memphis on Sunday night.

Southern League—AA—Mississippi (Braves) 3, Tennessee 0

Smokies were held to four hits and fell to the Braves for the third time in four days.

Hitting Recap: CF Trey Martin (.216) went 2-for-3 and RF Chris Coghlan double and walked in four plate appearances in his second rehab game. LF Jorge Soler went 0-for-3 with a walk in his first rehab game with the Smokies and 3B Chesny Young (.282) singled.

Pitching Chart: Brad Markey (6-6, 2.66 ERA) turned in a solid outing as the right-hander held the Braves to one run over the first six frames, allowing six hits while fanning three. Markey threw 72 pitches, 43 for strikes, and had a game score of 58. Starling Peralta gave up a run over three innings and Juan Paniagua surrendered a run in the ninth.

Smokies News: Smokes have not named a starter for Sunday as they try to salvage the final game of the series.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 9, Wilmington (Royals) 0

Four Pelicans pitchers combined to blank the Blue Rocks.

Hitting Recap: DH Ian Rice (.242) knocked in three runs, two coming on his fifth homer of the year in the Pelicans five-run fourth. 2B David Bote (.325) slugged a two-run homer in the first and finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs scored. 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.236) ran his season RBI total up to a team-high 65 with a pair on two hits, including a double. SS Gleyber Torres (.275) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Making his first start in Aug. 31 in 2013 at Kane County, James Pugliese (3-4, 3.26 ERA) got the spot start for the Pelicans and tossed five shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out four. Pugliese didn’t issue any walks in the 79-pitch gem and recorded six ground ball outs. Game score 64. Craig Brooks worked around a pair of walks in a scoreless sixth and Daniel Lewis fanned two in two shutout frames. Pedro Araujo blanked the Blue Rocks in the ninth.

Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (7-5, 4.01 ERA) gets the start on Sunday evening against Myrtle Beach.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend vs. Peoria (Cardinals)

Game was rained out and the two team swill play a double header on Monday with a 1:05 p.m. EST start. Adbert Alzolay is expected to get the start on Sunday.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 11, Vancouver (Blue Jays) 4

Eugene scored seven times in the second and beat Vancouver for the third straight game.

Hitting Recap: C Tyler Payne (.254) smacked his first pro homer, a three-run shot in the Ems big second inning. 3B Vimael Machin (.444) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and RF Robert Garcia (.298), double, tripled, scored twice and drove in a run. LF Michael Foster (.171) and CF Darryl Wilson (.191) both had two hits and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: RH Michael Knighton got his first start of the season and blanked the Canadians for four innings. Knighton allowed three hits, walked three and fanned one. Duncan Robinson got credit for the win, surrendering two runs over two innings. Scott Frazier gave up two runs in the 7th and M.T. Minacci tossed two scoreless frames.

Emeralds Notes: Oscar De La Cruz makes his second start against Vancouver on Sunday.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 7, White Sox 4

Cubs (15-11) scored five times in the fifth to beat the White Sox (10-17)

Hitting Recap: CF Jose Gonzalez (.120) had a pair of hits and knocked in four runs while DH Gustavo Polanco (.363) and 3B Rafael Mejia (.220) both had three hits and scored twice 

Pitching Chart RH Bailey Clark, Cubs fifth-round pick out of Duke, made his debut on Saturday night and according to John Arguello of Cubs Den, was hitting 94-95 with his fastball and also throwing a sinking change-up (85-88) and slider (low 80s). Clark allowed two hits and fanned two in his debut over two scoreless innings. RH Josh Conway made his first rehab appearance after going on the DL with Tennessee on July 3. Conway surrendered a run in the third on two hits and a walk. Tyson Miller, the Cubs fifth-round pick in June, made his professional debut on Saturday night and earned the win, giving up two unearned runs over three innings on a walk and a hit. The right-hander fanned two. Pablo Ochoa worked the final three innings for his first save. 

Dominican Summer League— Mets 1 (6), Cubs 1 (3)

Cubs (16-26) losing streak reaches eight games as the Mets scored three times in the seventh.

Hitting Recap: Cubs outhit the Mets 12-6 as they erased a 3-0 deficit with a run in each of the first three frames. RF Jonathan Sierra (IFA15-DR, .265) went 3-for-4 with a RBI and SS Yonathan Perlaza (IFA15-V, .281) was 3-for-4 with a run scored. One of the top IFA’s signed last summer, Perlaza is hitting .404 over his last 11 games. CF Jose Gutierrez (IFA15-DR, .253) went 2-for-5 while 1B Jose Rojas (IFA1-V, .200) singled and drove in a run. 

Pitching Chart: Pitchers didn’t get much help as three errors led to five unearned runs. Andres Bonalde (IFA14-V) got the start and lasted six innings, allowing three unearned runs on four hits and a walk. Bonalde fanned three while recording 11 ground ball outs. Freddy Tineo (IFA14-V, 2-2, 6.42 ERA) surrendered three runs (one earned) in two innings and Fernando Calderon (FA15-DR) worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (12), D-Backs 2 (8)

Cubs (25-17) scored four runs in the tenth after losing a 7-1 lead.

Hitting Recap: Cubs collected 11 hits and induced 10 walks. Everybody got into the act as DH Yovanny Cuevas (IFA14-DR, .248), CF Abraham Rodriguez (IFA15-Pan., .297), RF Fidel Matos (IFA13-DR, .225), Daniel Diaz (IFA14-V, .140) and 3B Ronaldo Lopez (IFA14-DR, .154) all had two RBI. SS Aramis Ademan (IFA15-DR, .246) had two hits and scored twice while LF Luis Ubiera (IFA13-DR, .220) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one knocked in. Ademan gave the Cubs the lead with a bases loaded single in the tenth and Cuevas added a two-run double for insurance.

Pitching Chart: RH Emilio Ferrebus (IFA14-V) made his eighth start and gave up five runs on seven hits and four walks in 3.2 innings. Yan De La Cruz (FA15-DR) tossed 1.1 shutout frames and Robert Severino (FA15-DR) worked a scoreless sixth. Maikel Aguiar (IFA15-V) surrendered three runs in 1.1 innings. Luiz Escanio (IFA12-DR, 3-1, 1.15 ERA) allowed the inherited tying run to score in the 8th and got charged with a blown save but kept the D-Backs off the board in his 2.2 innings of work.
