Hedges promoted to Tennessee
The Chicago Cubs have promoted RHP Zach Hedges from Myrtle Beach to AA Tennessee. The Cubs 26th round pick in 2014 out of Azusa Pacific, Hedges made 16 starts in the Carolina League and at the time of the promotion was tops with a 2.89 ERA among active starting pitchers. A Carolina League All-Star, Hedges throws a fastball in the lows 90s sports a slider, change-up and curve ball. For the Pelicans, the 23-year-old was 7-8 with a 2.89 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP in 96.2 innings (18 BB, 63 K). Check out the game recap for Hedges AA debut on Sunday.
There was talk earlier in week of Eugene’s Jose Paulino being promoted to the Midwest League so this move may make room for a starter from South Bend (presumably Preston Morrison) to move up and fill Hedges roster spot.
Nathan activated, Warren back to Iowa
The Chicago Cubs activated relief pitcher Joe Nathan from the 60-day disabled list and have optioned RHP Adam Warren back to Iowa. Nathan signed a free agent contract with the Cubs back in May and has been rehabbing from his second Tommy John surgery. Nathan appeared in seven games for Tennessee and then pitched in four more at Iowa before being recalled to the big leagues. The 41-year-old threw 9.1 innings in the minors and fanned five and only allowed three hits but two were homers.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Memphis (Cardinals) 5, Iowa 1
Memphis beat the Cubs for the third straight game.
Hitting Recap: Cubs only run of the game came in the first when LF Mark Zagunis (.273) ripped a two-out triple to right and scored on a single by C Tim Federowicz (.330). 3B Jeimer Candelario (.309) had two singles.
Pitching Chart: Drew Rucinskii took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings. The right-handed workhorse for the I-Cubs needed 83 pitches and recorded seven ground ball outs. Giovanni Soto fanned four in 2.2 innings but allowed two runs in the seventh. Jose Rosario got the final four outs without any more damage.
I-Cubs Notes: Jordan Pries (2-1, 3.65 ERA) will make his Cubs debut on Monday night in Memphis. The right-hander was acquired from Seattle in the deal that brought LHP Mike Montgomery to the North Side and sent 1B Daniel Vogelbach and RHP Paul Blackburn to the Mariners. Blackburn made his M’s debut for Jackson on Sunday and only threw seven pitches, retiring all three hitters he faced but didn’t return for a second innin........Vogelbach homered in his first at-bat with the Mariners and added another blast on Sunday night. He’s is 5-for-12 in three games.
Southern League—AA—Mississippi (Braves) 8, Tennessee 5
Mississippi rallied late to down Tennessee for the fourth time in five games.
Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges made his AA debut and threw 87 pitches over six innings but didn’t figure in the decision. The Braves scored four times in the third and Hedges allowed seven hits and a walk with two punchouts. Stephen Perakslis worked a scoreless seventh but James Farris (0-3, 3.80 ERA) got tagged for two runs in the eighth and took the loss. Juan Paniagua gave up more two runs in the ninth.
Smokies News: Tennessee has Monday off and head to Chattanooga (Twins) for five games and then five more in Birmingham (White Sox).
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Wilmington (Royals) 4
Pelicans scored six runs in the third and downed the Blue Rocks for the third straight game. The win was Buddy Bailey’s 1,900th win as a minor league manager.
Hitting Recap: Pelicans put up six in the third, the first three coming on a bases-clearing double by 1B Yasiel Balaguert. Daniel Spingola added a sacrifice fly and Tyler Pearson capped of the scoring with a two-run single. Myrtle Beach had five of their eight hits in the frame. Jesse Hodges was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Pitching Chart: Jonathan Martinez (8-5, 4.07 ERA) pitched into the sixth and won his eighth game of the season, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks. He got helped by a pair of double plays and an outfield assist from Charcer Burks. Tommy Nance was lights out in his second appearance, retiring all eight hitters he faced, two on strikes. Ryan McNeil got the final three outs for his Carolina league leading 15th save.
Pelicans News: Jeremy Null (2-4, 4.88 ERA) faces Carolina on Monday night in his 13th start. The 15th round pick in 2014 out of Western Carolina has allowed 78 hits in 59 innings.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 4, Peoria (Cardinals) 3
Alberto Mineo’s RBI single in the bottom of the 8th gave the Cubs the win.
Hitting Recap: Cubs tied the game in the second when 1B Matt Rose (.185) took a fastball off the center field wall for a RBI double, scoring SS Andruw Monasterio (.212), who singled. 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.319) singled in the third and scored on a triple by C P.J. Higgins (.280). 3B Bryant Flete (.227) extended his hit streak to 11 games with a solo homer in the seventh, his fourth of July. After the Chiefs tied the game at 3-3, CF Donnie Dewees (.278) singled to lead off the eighth and took second on a errant pickoff throw. DH Alberto Mineo (.250) followed with a RBI single to give the Cubs in the lead for good. Dewees and Rose both finished with two hits.
Pitching Chart: Casey Bloomquist fired six solid innings, holding the Chiefs to one run on five hits and a walk. The right-hander fanned four, recorded 12 ground ball outs and had a game score of 59. RH Tanner Griggs (1-0, 3.18 ERA) got charged with a blown save by giving up two runs in the eighth, on two hits and walk. Griggs threw two innings and got credit for the win. James Norwood fanned a pair in the ninth for his sixth save.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 5, Vancouver (Blue Jays) 3
Ems made it four straight over the Canadians with a three-run eighth.
Hitting Recap: Ems got on the board with two outs in the fifth when DH Trent Giambrone (.234) walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a double off the bat of CF Darryl Wilson (.195). 3B Wladimir Galindo (.225) added a RBI single in the sixth and RF Kevonte Mitchell (.221) plated two runs with a base knock in the eighth. A bases loaded walk scored the Ems other run.
Pitching Chart: Oscar De La Cruz fanned seven over 4.1 innings, holding the Canadians to one run on three hits and a walk. De La Cruz threw 75 pitches, 48 for strikes, and had a game score of 56. Alex Santana gave up a run over 1.2 frames and Wyatt Short earned his first pro win with a scoreless seventh. Mark Malave needed 13 pitched for a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save.
Emeralds Notes: Bryan Hudson (1-3, 3.51 ERA) takes the mound for his 7th start on Monday night. Hudson has issued 21 walks in 25.2 innings......A lot of chatter on the internet about Jose Paulino getting promoted to South Bend after the Emeralds clinched the first-half title and the lefty tossed seven solid innings. There has yet to be any official roster move......Emeralds now have six 2016 draft picks on the roster—OF Connor Myers (27th round), SS Zack Short (17th, C Samuel Tidaback (21st), LHP Wyatt Short (13th), RHP Duncan Robinson (9th), and RHP Chad Hockin (6th).
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 3, A’s 2
Isaac Paredes RBI double in the eighth proved to be the difference.
Pitching Chart: Junior Marte got thes tart and went 4.1 innings, allowing a run on three hits and five walks. Yapson Gomez got the win, surrendering a run in 2.1 innings. Holden Cammack, the Cubs 16th round pick in June, made his pro debut, retiring two hitters while allowing a hit and a walk. Eugenio Palma got the final four outs for his second save.
Cubs Notes: Cubs travel to face the Brewers on Monday night.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1
No games in the DSL on Sunday and the Cubs (16-26) need a break as they’re in the midst of an eight-game losing streak.
Hitting Recap: After hitting .196 over his first 15 games, SS Yonathan Perlaza has been on a terror batting .338/.386/.532 in 19 games in July and no welds the team with a .281 average. Perlaza signed for $1 million last summer out of Venezuela. Another player signed last year without much fanfare, IF Orian Nunez is off to a good start in his first pro season—batting .276/.345/.423 in 37 games.
Pitching Chart: Second-year pro Jesus Tejada, 19, leads the Cubs with 39.1 innings and is 1-2 with a 3.20 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 10 BB and 25 K. All-Star Brailyn Marquez, considered the best left-hander to come out of the Dominican Republic last summer, is 3-1 in 1.74 ERA in his first seven starts. He leads the Cubs with 27 K and sports a 1.26 WHIP.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2
Cubs 2 (25-17) find themselves two games behind Mariners (27-15). The Cubs and M’s have a two-game series Monday and Tuesday.
Hitting Recap: OF Yovanny Cuevas is only hitting .248 but has been productive at the plate (.377 OBP), leading the team with three homers, 16 stolen bases and second with 21 RBI and 17 walks. OF Abraham Rodriguez is hitting .297 with a team-high 27 RBI and SS Fidel Mejia leads the team with a .331 average and 27 runs. Both were DSL all-stars.
Pitching Chart: Faustino Carrera (3-0, 0.96 ERA) has been the Cubs best starter, making seven starts and striking out 27 in 34.2 innings. However, the first year pro from Mexico sports a 1.85 WHIP with 46 hits and 17 walks.
