Balaguert named Player of Week
Myrtle Beach Pelicans first baseman Yasiel Balaguert has been named the Carolina League Player of the Week for July 18-24. The honor is Balaguert's second weekly award of the season. The Cuban native hit .423/.464/.731 with five doubles, two walks, a home run and 14 RBI during the week. He tallied five multi-hit performances, rising to third in the league in RBI (68). Balaguert also ranks fifth in the league in home runs (13) while pacing the circuit in games played (98) and at-bats (372). Over his last 11 games, the Pelicans first baseman has hit .370/.431/.609
Pacific Coast League—AAA—New Orleans (Marlins) 9, Iowa 5
New Orleans pounded Cubs pitching for 15 hits and took the series opener.
Hitting Recap: 2B Juan Perez went 2-for-4, scored twice and knocked in three, including one on his 7th homer. 3B Jeimer Candelario (.303) added a solo blast (4) and Taylor Davis (.239) went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
Pitching Chart: RH Jake Buchanan (9-6, 4.78 ERA) allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings. Buchanan fanned three and threw 88 pitches. RH Pierce Johnson (8.02 ERA) made a bullpen appearance but got tagged for three runs over two innings on five hits, including a homer. Gerardo Concepcion blanked the Zephyrs over the final two frames, striking out two.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 13, Chattanooga (Twins) 9
Smokies used a six-run second to down the Lookouts.
Hitting Recap: CF Trey Martin(.264) went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and knocked in two while 3B Chesny Young (.290) had four hits, scored once and added a RBI. RF Chris Coghlan was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two knocked in while LF Jorge Soler went 0-for-4 with a RBI. 2B Ian Happ (.297) plated a pair of runs, doubled twice and scored once.
Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina (4-9, 5.58 ERA) had his best outing of the month, holding the Lookouts to two runs over five innings. Skulina allowed five hits, walked two and recoded one strikeout in the 95-pitch outing. Jack Leathersich only got one out in the sixth as he gave up two runs on two hits. Nick Sarianides tossed 1.2 scoreless frames and R.J. Alvarez worked the eighth without any damage but didn’t get an out in the ninth as he allowed a walk, a single and three doubles, plating four runs. Stephen Perakslis allowed an inherited runner to score to cut the lead to 13-9 but got a double play grounder and a fly out to end the game.
Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng (5-3, 3.03 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday at Chattanooga.....Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters that Jorge Soler may only need around 10 at-bats before heading back to Chicago so he may be gone before the end of the Chattanooga series.
Carolina League—High A—Carolina (Braves) 8, Myrtle Beach 6
Carolina scored five times in the eighth to down the Pelicans.
Hitting Recap: Pelicans had 13 hits as 2B Bryant Flete went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI in his Carolina League debut. LF Charcer Burks (.242) had two hits, including a two-run homer (8), and three RBI. CF Donnie Dewees was 2-for-4 in his Myrtle Beach debut.
Pitching Chart: Tommy Thorpe made his fifth start and lasted 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. The lefty fanned three and threw 67 pitches, 42 for strikes. Daniel Lewis got charged with a run in 2.1 frames as the right-hander walked three and surrendered three hits. Pedro Araujo worked a scoreless seventh but gave up five runs in the eighth, three coming on a homer. C Tyler Pearson made his second appearance and got the final out of the 8th and blanked the Braves in the ninth.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend
South Bend had the day off and head to Lake County for a three-games series. The Cubs will be playing without OF Donnie Dewees, IF Bryant Flete and RHP Preston Morrison, who were both promoted to Myrtle Beach. LHP Jose Paulino and RHP Oscar De La Cruz have been promoted to South Bend along with IF Vimael Machin.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Salem-Keizer (Giants) 5, Eugene 1
The Volcanoes held the Ems to five hits and took the series opener.
Hitting Recap: Eugene scored their only run in the seventh when 1B Juan Paniagua (.269) doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single from 2B Trent Giambrone (.239). Paniagua finished the night 2-for-4 while C Samuel Tidabeack (.239) and CF Robert Garcia (.292) singled.
Pitching Chart: Erling Moreno (IFA13-Columbia) made his NWL debut on Tuesday night and fanned seven in five shutout innings. The right-hander allowed five hits, walked one and had a game score of 65. Dakota Mekkes (0-1, 9.00 ERA) also made his NWL debut as the Cubs 10th round pick in June out of Michigan State surrendered two runs in the sixth and tossed a scoreless seventh. Chad Hockin allowed an unearned run in the eighth and Mark Malave gave up a pair in the ninth.
Emeralds Notes: Manuel Rondon (3-0, 1.67 ERA) gets the ball on Wednesday night......Pitchers Jose Paulino, Jesus Castillo and Jared Cheek along with outfielders Chris Pieters and Robert Garcia will represent Eugene on the Northwest League All-Star team when they face the Pioneer League on Aug. 2 in Ogden, Utah.....Roster moves: LHP Jose Paulino has been promoted to South Bend while pitchers Erling Moreno and Dakota Mekkes have been promoted from Mesa to Eugene.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 6, Brewers 4
Cubs jumped out to a 6-0 lead and withstood a late charge by the Brewers.
Hitting Recap: Cubs erupted for 11 hits as C Michael Cruz (.250) went 3-for-3 with a run scored and DH Jhonny Pereda (.267) added a three-run homer, his first. 3B Rafael Mejia (.229) added two hits while LF Yohan Matos (.264), 1B Kevin Zamudio (.217) and SS Isaac Paredes (.282) all got credit for RBI.
Pitching Chart: Javier Assad (2-0, 2.78 ERA) tossed five shutout innings as the right-hander from Mexico held the Brewers to three hits while fanning three. Game score 69. Josh Conway worked a scoreless sixth in his second rehab appearance. RH Jose Leidenz (IFA13-DR) got charged with two runs over 1.2 frames and LH Marc Huberman recorded the final four outs for his first professional save.

Three Rangers pitchers combined for the three-hit shutout.
Pitching Chart: Jesus Tejada went six innings and didn’t allow any earned runs but four Cubs errors led to three runs. Tejada allowed five hits, walked one and fanned two. Edison Novas tossed three no-hit scoreless frames with four punchouts and a walk

Dominican Summer League—Mariners (4), Cubs 2 (1)
The M’s (28-16) kept the Cubs (26-18) out of first and upped their lead to two games.
Hitting Recap: Only two hits for the Cubs and they scored in the eighth when DH Abraham Rodriguez (.295) walked, took second on a HBP, advanced to third on a double play and scored on a wild pitch. CF Yovanny Cuevas (.250) doubled and Luis Diaz added a single.
Pitching Chart: RH Hector Garcia (2-1, 2.19) suffered his first loss, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over five innings. He fanned five and had a game score of 54. Robert Severino surrendered a run in two frames and Bryan Molina tossed a scoreless eighth.
