News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 28

South Bend left-hander Ryan Kellogg had one of his best outings of the season as the former fifth-round pick blanked Lake County for six innings.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—New Orleans (Marlins) 7, Iowa 1

Zephyrs held the Cubs to one run and took the third game of the series.

Hitting Recap: Cubs scored their only run of the game in the sixth on a solo homer from RF Mark Zagunis (.275), his sixth since joining Iowa and tenth overall. CF Albert Almora (.319) went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and Zagunis added a single.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Cahill (0-2, 6.10 ERA) made his third rehab start and lasted 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. He threw 71 pitches and fanned five. Armando Rivero fanned three in 1.1 scoreless but Miguel Mejia got charged with four runs in the seventh. Giovanni Soto worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: LH Brian Matusz will get the start Friday nigh tat New Orleans......RHP Miguel Mejia was activated from the DL and LHP Gerardo Concepcion was placed on the temporary inactive list to be home for the birth of his child.

Southern League—AA—Chattanooga (Twins) 4, Tennessee 3

Smokies overcame a 3-0 deficit but lost on a walk-off.

Hitting Recap: Cubs cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth on a RBI double by 3B Gioskar Amaya (.164) and a RBI ground out by C Benjamin Carhart (.224). With two outs in the eighth, 1B Victor Caratini (.287) walked and scored on a double from DH David Freitas (.296). Caratini finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Chris Coghlan and Jorge Soler didn’t play.

Pitching Chart: Michael Wagner, Cubs 15th round pick in 2013 out of San Diego, made his third AA start (11 overall) and tossed a season-high six innings. Wagner allowed three runs on six hits and two walks in the 81-pitch outing. James Farris blanked the Lookouts over two innings, striking out two. Nick Sarianides (1-2, 3.38 ERA) only got one out in the ninth as three singles ended the game.

Smokies News: Brad Markey (6-6, 2.86 ERA) toes the rubber Friday night in Chattanooga. 

Carolina League—High A—Salem (Red Sox) 8, Myrtle Beach 2

Salem used a five-run eight and a rain storm to beat the Pelicans.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans got on the board in the third when DH Daniel Spingola (.220) double and took third on a single from C Tyler Pearson (.200). 2B Bryant Flete’s fly ball to right scored Spingola. In the eighth, 3B David Bote (.306) and CF Donnie Dewees (.364) singled and Bote scored on a ground out by RF Jeffrey Baez (.228). Spingola finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton mowed down the Red Sox for the first five frames on one hit but two singles and a homer in the sixth scored three runs. The right-hander fanned six, had a game score of 59 and threw 81 pitches, 52 for strikes. Craig Brooks worked a scoreless seventh but got charged with five runs in the eighth on three hits and two walks. James Norwood made his Carolina League debut and gave up a RBI triple to the first hitter he faced before a heavy rain ended the game as the grounds crew was unable to get the tarp on the field.

Pelicans News: Preston Morrison is expected to make his Carolina League debut on Friday night in Salem.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 3, Lake County (Indians) 0

Ryan Kellogg and two reliever blanked the Captains. 

Hitting Recap: The Cubs got on the board in the seventh as LF Eloy Jimenez (.331) tripled to right and scored on a single by DH Eddy Martinez (.267). They took advantage of three walks, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly to add two more runs in the ninth. CF Connor Myers was plunked with the bases loaded and RF Roberto Caro (.233) added a sac fly. 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.320) went 2-for-4 and Martinez finished 2-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (4-7, 3.46 ERA) had one of his best outings of the season. The left-hander fanned six over six shutout innings and limited the Captains to four hits. Kellogg only needed 68 pitches, 47 for strikes, and had a game score of 74. Kellogg blanked Wisconsin for six innings back on May 3. LH John Williamson retired all six hitters he faced, including striking out the side in the eighth. Dillon Maples retired the side in order in the ninth for his fourth save. 

SB-Cubs News: Kyle Miller (4-2, 2.12 ERA) gets the ball on Friday night at Lake County.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Salem-Keizer (Giants) 5, Eugene 4

The Volcanoes grabbed an early lead and took the series from the Ems.

Hitting Recap: Eugene scored twice in the second on a RBI ground out from C Tyler Payne (.235) and a run scoring single off the bat of SS Yeiler Peguero (.250). Ems added two more in the eighth on a solo homer from 3B  Wladimir Galindo (5) and a RBI ground out from Trent Giambrone (.254), who ended the night 2-for-4. 

Pitching Chart: Jesus Castillo (2-3, 3.27 ERA) only lasted 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks. He allowed a two-run homer in the second and fanned four. M.T. Minacci gave up a run over 2.1 frames and Alex Santana tossed two scoreless. OF Michael Foster worked a scoreless ninth.

Emeralds Notes: Eugene has not named a starter for Friday night at Boise.....RHP Michael Knighton has been named to the NWL All-Star team to replace Jared Cheek, who got the call to South Bend. Knighton, the Cubs 17th round pick in 2014 out of Central Alabama Community College, has appeared in 12 games and sports a 1.65 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. The 22-year-old has made one start and converted both of his save opportunities.

Arizona Rookie League—D-Backs 2, Cubs 1

D-Backs scored twice in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off win.

Hitting Recap: Cubs scored their only run in the first when LF Luis Ayala (.318) got hit by a pitch, took third on a single and error, and scored on a RBI single from SS Isaac Paredes (.289). Cubs had 10 hits in the loss but were just 2-for-13 with RISP and stranded 12. Ayala, 2B Edgar Rondon (.239), Paredes, and 1B Gustavo Polanco  (.356) all had two hits. Delvin Zinn made his pro debut as a pinch hitter in the eighth, he grounded out to second.

Pitching Chart: Cubs fifth-round pick Bailey Clark made his second start and tossed three shutout innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Eugenio Palma fanned five over 3.1 shutout innings and Jed Carter kept the D-Backs off the board for 1.2 frames. In the ninth, Ho-young Son only got one out as three hits, a walk and a hit batter gave the D-Backs the win.

Cubs Notes: Cubs face the D-Backs again on Friday and fourth-round pick Tyson Miller will make his first pro start on his birthday. Zack Greinke is expected to start for the D-Backs on rehab assignment. 

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (6), Pirates (1)

Brailyn Marquez tossed five shutout frames as the Cubs  (19-27) beat the Pirates (16-30).

Hitting Recap: Cubs had 10 hits as C Franklin Tineo (IFA13-DR, .192) went 2-for-4 with two RBI. DH Jonathan Sierra (IFA15-DR, .265) and 3B Orian Nunez (IFA15-DR, .286) both had two hits and plated a run. LF Jose Jules (IFA14-DR, .230) went 2-for-4, scored twice and swiped two bases. 

Pitching Chart: Brailyn Marquez (IFA15-DR, 4-1, 1.50 ERA) allowed three hits and walked three over five shutout innings. The 6-foot-4 left-hander fanned four and had a game score of 62. Juan Rengifo (IFA13-V) allowed a run over three innings and Fernando Calderon (IA15-DR) tossed a scoreless ninth.

Cubs Notes: Cubs face the Indians on Friday.

Dominican Summer League— Dodgers 1 (7), Cubs 2 (4) 

Cubs (26-20) took a 2-0 lead in first but Dodgers  (28-18) answered with six straight runs.

Hitting Recap: 1B Richard Nunez (IFA13-DR, .288) gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run single, scoring 2B Luis Diaz (single) and SS Aramis Ademan (walk). Ademan (IFA15-DR, .248) added a RBI with a ground out in the seventh as did LF Abraham Rodriguez (IFA15-Panama, .286) after Cubs loaded bases with no outs. Diaz (IFA15-DR, .260), went 2-for-4 and Nunez finished with two hits.

Pitching Chart: Carlos Ocampo (IFA15-Col., 1-1, 3.00 ERA) didn’t allow any hits over four innings but the 17-year-old right-hander did issue five walks and uncorked four wild pitches that resulted in two runs. Ocampo fanned two and recorded seven ground ball outs in his seventh start. Yan De La Cruz (FA-14-DR, 2-2, 6.93 ERA) got tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs (one earned) on four hits over 1.2 frames. Ivan Medina (IFA13-V) gave up a run over the final 2.1 innings.
