News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 29

Eloy Jimenez smacked a grand slam and set a career-high with nine total bases as South Bend beat Lake County 11-7.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—New Orleans (Marlins) 7, Iowa 5

New Orleans grabbed an early 7-2 lead and hung on to down the I-Cubs. 

Hitting Recap: 3B Jeimer Candelario (.303) slugged a two-run homer in the 8th to pull the Cubs within two but that would be all the closer they would get. Candelario went 2-for-5 with three RBI. CF Albert Almora (.319) added a pair of singles while RF John Andreoli (.250) and C Taylor Davis (.248) plated runs.

Pitching Chart: Drew Rucinski (5-11, 6.06) got tagged for seven runs over the first three frames but blanked the Zephyrs the final three and finished with a line of 6 IP, 8H, 7 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 98 pitches. RH Felix Pena fanned three over the final two shutout innings. 

I-Cubs Notes: Jake Buchanan (9-6, 4.78 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night in Omaha. 

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 7, Chattanooga (Twins) 6—11 innings

Victor Caratini’s RBI single in the 11th gave the Smokies the win.

Hitting Recap: With one out in the 11th, Trey Martin (.248) single, took second on a walk, moved to third on a fly ball to center and scored on Victor Caratini’s single to left. A triple shy of the cycle, RF Bijan Rademacher (.311) went 4-for-6 with three runs and a two-run homer in the fourth. SS Chesny Young (.290) had three singles and knocked in a run while Caratini (.289) finished 2-for-5. LF Jorge Soler (.083) went 0-for-4 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Brad Markey surrendered a three-run homer in the second, part of a four-run inning. Markey threw 91 pitches and had a line of 5 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 K. Stephen Perakslis tossed two scoreless and Jack Leathersich worked around a hit and a walk in eighth. David Garner got charged with his third blown save with a run in the 9th and left in the 10th with two on. Starling Peralta (5-1, 3.42 ERA) stranded both runners and worked a scoreless eleventh

Carolina League—High A—Salem (Red Sox) 3, Myrtle Beach 1

Salem scored three times in the seventh and beat Myrtle Beach of the second straight night.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans scored their only run of the game in the eighth when Bryant Flete singled and scored on a double from David Bote. Flete and 1B Yasiel Balaguert  (.249) both finished 2-for-4. CF Donnie Dewees (.333) went 1-for-4 and 3B Jesse Hodges (.217) added a single.

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison was impressive in his Carolina League debut as the right-hander blanked the Red Sox over six innings on five hits and a walk. Morrison fanned six, recorded eight ground ball outs and had a game score of 70 in the 87-pitch outing. Surrendering three runs on three hits and a walk, Daury Torrez (1-2, 4.56 ERA) only got two outs in the seventh before Pedro Araujo got the final out, stranding both inherited runners. Araujo worked a scoreless eight and ended the night with three strikeouts.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 11, Lake County (Indians) 7

A career night from Eloy Jimenez propelled the Cubs past the Captains in the series finale.

Hitting Recap: Eloy Jimenez (.338) was a triple shy of a cycle, scored four times, smashed a grand slam and recorded a career-high nine total bases. After hitting a pair of doubles (MWL-best 32) in his first two at-bats, the 19-year-old launched a ball out of Classic Park and into Lake Erie, clearing the bases for South Bend’s first grand slam of the season. Okay, it didn’t end up in Lake Erie but it did land on Ivy Street outside the park, an estimated 450-foot bomb. Jimenez singled in his next at-bat and fanned in his final trip to the plate. DH Alberto Mineo continues to scorch Midwest League pitching as the left-handed hitting Italian went 3-for-5 with two run scored. Mineo is 13-for-39 in 10 games since joining South Bend. SS Vimael Machin (.125), C Tyler Alamo (.254) and CF Roberto Caro (.231) all knocked in two runs and 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.322) had two hits and scored once. Since having his seven-game hitting streak snapped, Sepulveda has three straight multi-hit games. 

Pitching Chart: Kyle Miller gave up three hits and two runs in the first and the Captains added three more in the sixth off the the right-hander. Miller got the win and finished with a line of 5.2 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 0 B, 6 K. Miller got some help from RF Eddy Martinez as he gunned down two runners at home in the sixth. Making his MWL debut, RH Jared Cheek allowed an inherited runner to score in the sixth and got tagged for two runs in the seventh on three singles. Scott Effross fanned three over the final two scoreless innings.

SB-Cubs News: Oscar De La Cruz makes his Midwest League debut on Saturday night at Great Lakes.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Boise (Rockies) 8, Eugene 7

Ems rocked Boise pitching for 16 hits but the Hawks scored five in the ninth and slugged walk-off homer in the tenth.

Hitting Recap: 2B Yeiler Peguero (.264) and DH Trent Giambrone (.280) both had three hits and knocked in a run to lead the hit parade. CF Darryl Wilson (.197) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and SS Zach Short (.263) had two hits and plated a run. 3B Wladimir Galindo (.218) doubled, walked, scored twice and added a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease only faced five hitters as he struckout one and issued four walks before leaving. It was his first game since exiting a July 11 start with a forearm cramp. Duncan Robinson was pressed into early service and tossed 3.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks while fanning three. Enrique De Los Rio worked three frames and got charged with an unearned run on four hits and two walks. Andin Diaz threw a scoreless eighth and then gave up five runs in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Mark Malave retired first two hitters he faced in the tenth and then surrendered the walk-off homer.

Emeralds Notes: Pedro Silverio is scheduled to get the start on Saturday night in Boise.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 1, D-Backs 0-Suspended after three innings

With a big contingent on hand to see Arizona’s Zack Greinke, the Cubs youngsters stole the show. The game was suspended by rain after three-and-half innings.

Hitting Recap: Cubs scored in the first off the former Cy Young winner as Delvin Zinn collected his first pro hit with a one-out single. Luis Ayala followed with a single and Zinn took third when the left fielder bobbled the ball. Zinn then scored on a ground out to third by Isaac Paredes. Gustavo Polanco and Kevin Zamudio singled to lead off the second but Greinke fanned the side. 

Pitching Chart: Tyson Miller made his first pro start and according to John Arguello of Cubs’s Den, Miller was sitting 91-93 with his fastball and hit 94. The Cubs fourth-round pick gave up a single, walked two and fanned one over three innings. Pablo Ochoa worked a 1-2-3 fourth before the rains came.

Cubs Notes: Cubs battle the Angels on Saturday night.

Dominican Summer League—Indians (5), Cubs 1 (2)

Indians used a three-run third to beat the Cubs.

Hitting Recap: C Erick Gonzalez and 1B Luis Hidalgo both had two hits as the Cubs out-hit the Tribe 9-to-7. All of the Cubs hits were singles as 3B Orian Nunez went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Andres Bonalde (1-5, 6.87 ERA) got the start and lasted three innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits. He fanned four and had a game score of 35. Miguel Estevez had his best outing of the year, tossing five shutout frames with seven punchouts and one hit.

Cubs Notes: Cubs look to even the score with the Indians on Saturday.

Dominican Summer League—Rojos (3), Cubs 2 (2)

The Reds’ three-run homer in the third stood up in a game called after six innings due to rain.

Hitting Recap: 1B Fidel Matos (.213) knocked in both runs with a sacrifice fly and a RBI triple. C Miguel Amaya (.263) went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored while DH Abraham Rodriguez (.287) singled and scored. 

Pitching Chart: Emilio Ferrebus (0-5, 5.13 ERA) worked into the sixth and kept the Rojos off the board except a three-run homer in the third. The right-hander from Venezuela finished with a line of 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Sucre Valdez faced two hitters in the seventh before rain ended the game.

Cubs Notes: Cubs face the Rojos on Saturday.
