News, Notes and Game Recaps from July 31

Adbert Alzolay pitched South Bend to a road win, Eugene’s Darryl Wilson stayed red-hot and Jeremy Null twirled a gem for Myrtle Beach.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 8, Omaha (Royals) 3

Iowa (46-63) scored four times in the first and beat the Storm Chasers (48-59).

Hitting Recap: Cubs batted around in the first and scored four times, two coming on a single from C Taylor Davis (.246). RF Juan Perez (.276) added a RBI single and 3B Jeimer Candelario (.299) walked and scored on a wild pitch. 2B Kris Negron (.238) added two RBI while CF Albert Almora (.320) went 2-for-5 with a run knocked in. 

Pitching Chart: Jake Buchanan (10-6, 4.78 ERA) battled through 5.2 innings, yielding three runs on seven hits and three walks. Buchanan won his team-high tenth game and fanned five in the 95-pitch outing. Armando Rivero earned his tenth hold, fanning five in two scoreless. C.J. Riefenhauser recorded the final four outs.

I-Cubs Notes: LH Rob Zastryzny (4-3, 4.71 ERA) toes the rubber on Monday for his 12th AAA start and the 119 innings between two levels are a career-high.

Southern League—AA—Birmingham (White Sox) 6, Tennessee 2

Barons scored four times in the second and beat the Smokies in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Smokies scored both their runs in the fifth on RBI singles from 1B David Freitas (.298) and 3B Gioskar Amaya (.150). 2B Ian Happ (.285) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and DH Chesny Young (.289) doubled and crossed home.

Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina (4-10, 5.79 ERA) threw 106 pitches over six innings and the Barons scored four times in the second and added two more in the fifth. Skulina finished with a line of 6 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 5 K.  R.J. Alvarez and Jack Leathersich both tossed a scoreless inning.

Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng (5-4, 3.07 ERA) makes his 16th start and the Taiwan native has logged 76.1 innings with a 1.32 WHIP and a .271 BAA.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 3, Salem (Red Sox) 1

Myrtle Beach moved back into first in the second half with the win over Salem.

Hitting Recap: LF Charcer Burks (.245) gave the Pelicans a 1-0 lead with a leadoff homer in the first, his ninth. The 21-year-old came into the season with four homers over his first three seasons. Bryant Flete (.522), who went 3-for-4, launched his first Carolina League homer, a two-run shot in the third. Pelicans collected 12 hits as 1B David Bote (.320), DH Yasiel Balaguert (.252) and SS Andrew Ely all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Jeremy Nulll (3-4, 4.89 ERA) gave up three hits to load the bases but fanned the next two hitters before a walk forced in a run in the first. Null blanked the Red Sox over the next five frames and finished with a line of 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. Game score of 60 in the 93-pitch outing, 62 for strikes. Craig Brooks retired all four hitters he faced and Ryan McNeil fanned five over the final 1.2 frames to earn his 17th save.

Pelicans News: RH James Pugliese (3-4, 3.66 ERA) gets his second stat for the Pelicans on Monday at Frederick.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 2, Lake County (Dodgers) 1

Eloy Jimenez delivered a RBI single in the eighth to give South Bend the win in the rubber game.

Hitting Recap: Cubs faced Yadier Alvarez, one of the Dodgers top pitching prospects that signed for an $16 million bonus out of Cuba. In the first. P.J. Higgins (.274) roped a double down the left-field line and after a wild pitch, DH Alberto Mineo (.356) followed with a RBI single. Cubs drew two walks with one out in the third but LF Eloy Jimenez (.342) popped out and Eddy Martinez (.269) lined out to right. Alvarez left after four innings and 75 pitches, allowing a run on three hits and three walks. In the fifth with two outs, Mineo walked, took second on wild pitch, and scored on a RBI single from Jimenez, his 70th RBI. Martinez finished 2-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay fanned seven in six shutout innings as the 21-year-old has his best game since April. In the 87-pitch outing, the Venezuelan gave up five hits, walked one and recorded eight ground ball outs for a game score of 71. A two-base throwing error by 3B Matt Rose, a balk and a single cut the lead to 2-1 in Tanner Griggs’ first inning of relief in the 7th. Griggs gave up a leadoff single in the eighth and got two fly ball outs before leaving after 30 pitches. John Williamson got the final out of the eighth on strikes, the only hitter he faced. Dillon Maples recorded his fifth save with a scoreless ninth. Maples has allowed one run in 9.2 innings of relief since joining South Bend at the end of June.

SB-Cubs News: No starter has been named for Monday night’s game at Great Lakes......Cubs have activated LHP Kyle Twomey from the DL.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 7, Boise (Rockies) 6

Ems built a 7-3 lead and hung on to beat Boise behind the hot bat of Darryl Wilson.

Hitting Recap: Darryl Wilson (.243) had four hits and smacked his second homer, an inside-the-park shot down the right-field line in the sixth. It was Wilson third straight game with at least three hits and he’s 18-for-his-last-33. 3B Wladimir Galindo (.226) slugged his sixth homer, a solo shot in the three-run third and finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two knocked in. SS Zack Short (.273) was 2-for-4 with a triple and a RBI while 1B Jose Paniagua (.245) and 2B Yeiler Peguero (.252) added RBI. 

Pitching Chart: Bryan Hudson (2-3, 4.37 ERA) gave up two runs in the first but battled for five innings finishing with a line of 5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. Hudson threw 92 pitches, 53 for strikes, and recorded eight ground ball outs. Game score 51. LH Marc Huberman made his NWL debut and surrendered a run on three hits and a walk over two innings. Chad Hockin, the Cubs sixth-round pick in June, allowed two runs in the eighth on three hits and a walk. He fanned two in the 28-pitch outing. LH Wyatt Short worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.

Emeralds Notes: Eugene has Monday off and are on their all-star break. The Ems return to action on Thursday on Aug. 4 vs. Vancouver.....Cubs have released RHP Scott Frazier, the Cubs sixth-round pick in 2013 out of Pepperdine.

Arizona Rookie League—Angels 11, Cubs 4

Angels rocked Cubs pitching for 14 hits and swept the two-game series.

Hitting Recap: Only six hits for the Cubs as 1B Jhonny Pereda (.235) got credit for a pair of RBI. 3B Rafael Mejia (.207) doubled and scored while DH Yohan Matos (.242) singled, scored and drove in a run.

Pitching Chart: Junior Marte (0-3, 7.48 ERA) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks in 3.1 innings. Pablo Ochoa got the final two outs of the Angles seven-run fourth but not before allowing three inherited runners and and four more runs to score. Jose Leidenz gave up a run over two frames and Holden Cammack only got one out in the seventh, surrendering two runs on three hits. Yapson Gomez fanned three over the final 1.2 scoreless innings.

Cubs Notes: Cubs have Monday off and 23 games remain in the AZL schedule including five with the Giants, four with A’s, three with Padres, two with White Sox, D-Backs, Angels and Reds, one with Indians, Dodgers and Rangers, 

Dominican Summer League

Both Cubs teams had the day off and are back in action on Monday when Cubs 1 (19-29) face Yankees 1 (23-24) and Cubs 2 (27-21) battle Orioles 2 (22-26). There are 24 games left in the DLS season
