Cubs get Joe Smith
The Chicago Cubs traded RHP Jesus Castillo to the Los Angels Angles for right-hander reliever Joe Smith. The 32-year-old side-winder has spent the last three seasons with the Angels and posted a 1.81 ERA in 76 games in 2014 with a 0.80 WHIP. Since that season, Smith’s walk rate has gone up and strikeout rate dropped. In 38 games this year, Smith has six saves and a 3.82 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP and 4.62 FIP. Castillo was acquired from the Diamondbacks in the Tony Campana trade back in 2013 and spent a year in the VSL and two in Mesa in the Arizona Rookie League. The 20-year-old was part of Eugene’s rotation after spending last season in Mesa’s bullpen. In seven starts for the Ems, Castillo was 2-3 with a 3.27 ERA and fanned 11 in his second start against Spokane. The Cubs also designated LHP Brian Matusz for assignment and recalled RHP Spencer Patton.
Jimenez, Balaguert honored
Jimenez picked up his second player of the week award in the Midwest League. The 19-year-old hit .600/.607/1.080 with four doubles, a triple, two homers and 10 RBI. He also scored seven times and was 15-for-25. Its been quite a season for the Dominican Republic native as he was named the MVP of the MWL all-star game and smashed a long homer and made a spectacular catch at the Futures Game in San Diego. Through 93 games, Jimenez was hitting .342/.378/.544 with 12 homers and 70 RBI and 33 doubles. He leads the MWL in doubles, RBI, total bases (196), slugging (.544) and OPS (.923) and is second in batting average. Signed as part of the Cubs 2013 IFA class, Jimenez began his career in the Arizona Rookie League and played last season at Eugene.
Balaguert won his second straight Carolina League Player of the Week honor and his third this season. Balaguert went 13-for-32 at the plate throughout the week, posting a .406/.412/.719 line with four doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs and seven runs. The Cuban native recorded his first career multi-homer game in a 10-7 win on July 27 vs. Carolina. Signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2011, Balaguert has hits in 14 of his last 16 games, batting .386/.434/.643 with nine doubles, three homers and 22 RBIs during that span. No one in the Carolina League has played in more games (105) or tallied more at-bats (404) than Balaguert. He currently ranks third in RBIs (75), fourth in HR (15) and fifth in HR/AB (1/26.93).
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 13, Omaha (Royals) 0
Rob Zastryzny tossed five perfect innings with eight strikeouts and the Cubs smacked three homers in the blow out.
Hitting Recap: RF Juan Perez (.281) upped his hit streak to 13 games in impressive fashion, going 3-for-5 with a grand slam homer and five RBI. CF John Andreoli (.253) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI while Kris Negron (.238) slugged a three-run homer and finished with four RBI. 3B Jeimer Candelario (.303) hit his sixth homer and went 2-for-5 with two RBI. LF Albert Almora (.320) extended his hit streak to eight games. DH Taylor Davis was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and 1B Cael Brockmeyer (.210) slugged a pair of doubles and scored twice.
Pitching Chart: LH Rob Zastryzny (5-3, 4.37 ERA) was perfect through five innings, retiring all 15 hitters he faced, eight on strikes. Zastryzny recorded seven ground outs and had a game score of 78 in the 69-pitch gem. Miguel Mejia gave up a hit in a scoreless sixth and another base knock in the seventh. Corey Black worked a 1-2-3 eighth and Justin Grimm struckout the side in the ninth as Cubs pitching fanned 17.
I-Cubs Notes: RH Trevor Cahill takes the mound on Tuesday afternoon in Omaha.....RH Armando Rivero has not allowed an earned run over his last 19.2 innings.....Iowa just completed it worst July in franchise history going 8-21, topping the 8-20 mark set in 2012.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 3, Birmingham (White Sox) 2
Smokies scored three times in the top of the ninth to even the series.
Hitting Recap: Smokies were kept off the board the first eight frames on six hits but had four hits in the ninth. DH David Freitas (.304) led off with a single and after a strikeout, 3B Gioskar Amaya (.167) singled. SS Carlos Penalver (.201) doubled home Freitas and PH Bijan Rademacher (.307) tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left. 2B Chesny Young (.288) then doubled to center to score Penalver and give the Smokies the win. C Victor Caratini (.292), Freitas, Amaya and Penalver all finished with two hits. LF Jorge Soler went 0-for-4 with a walk.
Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng held the Barons to two runs over six innings as the right-hander allowed six hits and a walk. Tseng fanned three and had a game score of 59 in the 89-pitch outing. Nick Sarianides (2-2, 3.14 ERA) struckout three in two scoreless frames and got the win. James Farris earned his third save with two strikeouts in the ninth.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 5, Frederick (Orioles) 4
Pelicans used a two-run seventh to grab the lead for good and take the series opener over the Keys.
Hitting Recap: Trailing 3-2 in the seventh, LF Charcer Burks (.245) tripled and scored on a double from CF Donnie Dewees (.407). DH David Bote (.318) followed with a RBI single to give the Pelicans the lead. Dewees added a sacrifice fly in the ninth and finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.250) and RF Jeffrey Baez (.225) both plated runs in the first.
Pitching Chart: RH James Pugliese (4-4, 3.75 ERA) tossed a season-high six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk. Pugliese fanned six and had a game score of 49 in the 86-pitch outing. RH Daniel Lewis worked a scoreless 1.1 frames and Tommy Nance nailed down his first Carolina League save as the right-hander gave up a run over 1.2 innings.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Great Lakes (Dodgers) 1
Hitting Recap: Cubs grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on a RBI double from LF Eloy Jimenez (.342) and a run-scoring single off the bat of RF Eddy Martinez (.272). In the second, C P.J. Higgins (.271) plated the first run with a ground out and Jimenez followed with his second RBI double of the game, scoring Higgins. Vimael Machin (.077) walked with the bases loaded for a 5-0 lead. Jimenez finished 2-for-5 and leads the MWL with 35 doubles and 72 RBI. Martinez was 2-for-4 while 1B Alberto Mineo (.354) went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.
Pitching Chart: Justin Steele (4-5, 5.30 ERA) had another solid outing as the left-hander blanked the Loons for five innings, striking out seven while allowing three hits and a walk. Steele threw 76 pitches, 51 for strikes, and retired the final six hitters he faced, four on strikes. Game score of 69. Kyle Twomey saw his first action since July 5 and the left-hander fanned four in two innings, surrendering a run on three hits. Scott Effross recorded the final six outs, four on strikes.

Ems are in the All-Star break and get back to work on Thursday night. Representing Eugene are RHP Michael Knighton, OF Robert Garcia and 1B Chris Pieters. Pitchers Jared Cheek, Jose Paulino and Jesus Castillo were all named to play in the game but are no longer with the Ems. Cheek and Paulino have been promoted to South Bend and Castillo was traded to the Angels.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs
Cubs had the day off and are back in action on Tuesday against the Giants.
Dominican Summer League—Yankees 2 (6), Cubs 1 (5)
Yankees grabbed an early 4-0 lead and hung on to down the Cubs.
Hitting Recap: C Franklin Tineo (.223) had a big day, smacking a three-run homer (2) and going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. DH Henderson Perez (.202) was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. 3B Orian Nunez (.278) added a RBI and RF Jonathan Sierra (.272) singled, walked and scored once.
Pitching Chart: Jesus Tejada (1-4, 3.44 ERA) allowed five runs over 4.1 innings on four walks and four hits, including a solo homer. Freddy Tineo gave up a run over 2.2 frames and Luis Silva retired all six hitters he faced.

Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia (3-1, 1.92 ERA) fanned a career-high 10 hitters and blanked the O’s on three hits and a walk over seven innings. The second-year pro from Mexico had a game score of 84. Luiz Escanio fanned three in two scoreless frames, allowing a single.
