News, Notes and Game Recaps from Aug. 2

David Bote helped lift Myrtle Beach to a 13-inning win over Frederick, Jose Paulino tossed seven solid innings in South Bend’s win and Tennessee’s offense shot down the Barons.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Omaha (Royals) 1, Iowa 0

A hit batter with the bases loaded provided the only run of the game in the seventh.

Hitting Recap: Cubs collected eight hits, all singles, but stranded 13 and went 0-for-7 with RISP. CF John Andreolii (.254), LF Kris Negron (.241), and 2B Logan Watkins (.283) all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Cahill made his fourth rehab start and blanked the Storm Chasers for four innings on 62 pitches, 38 for strikes. The right-hander allowed two hits, walked two and fanned six for a game score of 62. LF Giovanni Soto worked around a leadoff walk in the fifth and left after the first two hitters of the sixth singled. Felix Pena (2-4, 3.90 ERA) stranded both inherited runners but hit a batter with the bases loaded to force in the only run of the game in the seventh. Jose Rosario fanned two in a scoreless eighth.

I-Cubs Notes: RH Drew Rucinski (5-11, 6.06 ERA) gets the ball on Wednesday night as the Cubs return to Principal Park to face New Orleans.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 9, Birmingham (White Sox) 1

Smokies topped Birmingham for the second straight night as they collected 16 hits in the win.

Hitting Recap: RF Bijan Rademacher’s three-run homer in the first over the center field wall put the Smokies up 4-0. C Victor Caratini (.293) delivered a RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Rademacher (.312) doubled and scored in the third on a single by 1B David Freitas (.302). 3B Chesny Young (.295) went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two knocked in, including a solo homer in the ninth, his fourth. Rademacher (.313) finished 3-for-5 with three RBI while CF Ian Happ (.286) had two hits and a RBI. Jorge Soler (.111) was 1-for-4 with two walks and Caratini finished 2-for-4. 

Pitching Chart: Michael Wagner (2-0, 2.05 ERA) held the Barons to one run over seven innings, allowing five hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts. Wagner threw 97 pitches and had a game score of 68. David Garner and David Berg each tossed a scoreless frame.

Smokies News: Brad Markey (6-6, 2.97 ERA) makes his 19th start on Wednesday. The Cubs 19th round pick in 2014 out of Virginia Tech has logged 103 innings with a 1.33 WHIP. Markey struggled in July, going 0-for-3 with 4.85 ERA in five starts.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 5, Frederick (Orioles) 4—13 innings

Pelicans scored three runs in the 13th and outlasted the Keys.

Hitting Recap: A two-out single by 1B David Bote (.325)  gave the Pelicans a 3-2 lead in the 13th and DH Jeffrey Baez (.228) added a two-run single for needed insurance. RF Daniel Spingola (.212) smacked his first pro homer, a solo shot in the second, to tie the game at 1-1. Bote doubled in the fourth and scored on another two-bagger off the bat of 2B Bryant Flete (.433) for a 2-1 lead. Bote finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored and Spingola had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett surrendered a run in the first but blanked the Keys the next four innings and left after getting two outs in the sixth. While Stinnett only allowed a first-inning single over the first five frames but he did issue five walks in the 94-pitch outing, 57 for strikes. Game score 56. In the sixth, Stinnett allowed a leadoff single and then made an errant pickoff throw to send the runner to second. A singled scored the run and Stinnett exited after getting a double play grounder. Pedro Araujo worked 1.1 scoreless and Tommy Thorpe retired two hitters. RH Daury Torrez retired the first six hitters he faced and tossed 2.1 scoreless. Craig Brooks blanked the Keys for two innings and James Norwood got credit for his first save for MB despite allowing two runs on four hits.

Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (5-7, 3.40 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday morning against the Keys. Clifton has gone six innings with 18 K and 4 BB in his last three starts.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Great Lakes (Dodgers) 2

Jose Paulino tossed seven strong innings for his first MWL win and South Bend’s offense collected 11 hits.

Hitting Recap: 1B Matt Rose (.201) tied the game in the second when LF Eloy Jimenez (.347) singled to extended his hit streak to nine games and Rose launched a pitch over the left-field wall, his sixth. RF Eddy Martinez (.271) gave the Cubs a 3-2 lead in the fifth with a RBI (60) single, scoring CF Connor Myers (.176), who doubled for his first MWL hit. The Cubs added two runs in the sixth on RBI singles from 3B Adonis Paula (.179) and Myers. Jimenez finished 3-for-4 and scored twice while Myers had three hits. 

Pitching Chart: Jose Paulino (1-0, 2.25 ERA) gave up two runs in the first, both unearned, and then blanked the Loons the next six frames, retiring 10 straight at one point.  The left-hander earned his first MWL win in the 90-pitch gem, striking out four while allowing five hits and two walks. Game score 66. LH John Williamson recorded his seventh hold and RH Jared Cheek earned his first MWL save with a scoreless ninth.

SB-Cubs News: Ryan Kellogg (4-7, 3.46 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday night against Fort Wayne. The left-hander fanned six in six shutout innings in his last start and it will be his fifth appearance against the Tin Caps.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene

Ems had the day off as the Northwest League All-Stars downed the Pioneer League 11-5. Chris Pieters got the start at DH and went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and a RBI. Robert Garcia was 1-for-2 and Michael Knighton fanned two in a scoreless inning of relief. Ems (30-14) are back in action on Thursday night when they host Vancouver (19-25). 

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs vs. Giants

Game was rained out.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (8), Yankees 1 (3)

Cubs (20-30) used a four-run sixth to knock off the Yanks (24-25).

Hitting Recap: 1B Luis Hidalgo (IFA14-V, .221) blasted a two-run homer (7) in the sixth and Jose Gutierrez (IFA15-DR, .243) added a solo bast (2) and finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. 2B Yonathan Perlaza (IFA15-V, .275) delivered a two-run double in the seventh while SS Rafael Narea (IFA14-DR, .260) went 1-for-3 with a run scored, a RBI and stole his 20th base.

Pitching Chart: Riger Fernandez (IFA14-V) got the start and only lasted four innings, issuing five free passes that led to a pair of runs on three hits. Juan Rengifo (IFA13-V,1-2, 4.30 ERA) got the win with three no-hit innings, walking two. Fernando Calderon (IFA15-DR) allowed a run over the final two innings.

Cubs Notes: Cubs face Mets 1 on Wednesday.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (1), Orioles 2 (0)

Richard Nunez smacked a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 12th for the win over the O’s. 

Hitting Recap: Only three hits for the Cubs, singles from 2B Luis Diaz (IFA15-DR, .263) and LF Luis Ubiera (IFA13-DR, .195) and the walk-off blast from 1B Richard Nunez (IFA13-DR, .292) over the left-field wall. Nunez also drew three walks. 

Pitching Chart: Another great outing from Alfredo Colorado  (IFA13-V) as the right-hander fanned 10 over seven shutout innings. The 20-year-old held the O’s to three hits and recorded eight ground ball outs. Omar Ventura (IFA14-V) tossed two shutout frames and Robert Severino (IFA13-DR, 2-0, 1.93 ERA) fanned four in three scoreless innings to earn the win.
