Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 7, New Orleans (Marlins) 4
Iowa scored five times in the second and downed New Orleans in the series opener.
Hitting Recap: 1B Taylor Davis (.253) smacked a solo homer and a RBI double while CF Albert Almora (.324) went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead the offense. 2B Kris Negron (.241) had two hits and plated a run and 3B Jeimer Candelario (.298) added a RBI single in the five-run second.
Pitching Chart: Jordan Pries earned his first win in a Cubs uniform. The right-hander went five innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits and two walks. Armando Rivero (2 IP), Jose Rosario (1 IP) and Spencer Patton (1 IP) didn’t allow a hit. Spencer got credit for his ninth save.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 5, Birmingham (White Sox) 1
Zach Hedges twirled a gem as the Smokies topped the Barons for the fourth straight night.
Hitting Recap: Tennessee grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when 2B Chesny Young (.294) led off the game with a double and scored on base hit from 3B Gioskar Amaya (.167). Trey Martin (.233) delivered a two-run triple in the fourth while back-to-back doubles by DH David Freitas (.304) and 1B Benjamin Carhart (.230) with two outs in the fifth scored two more.
Pitching Chart: In his third AA start, right-hander Zach Hedges (1-1, 2.50 ERA) blanked the Barons for seven innings, allowing four hits and a walk with four punchouts. Hedges threw 92 pitches, 59 for strikes, recorded 12 ground ball outs and had a game score of 76. Juan Paniagua pitched the final two innings, giving up a solo homer in the ninth.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Carolina (Braves) 4
Preston Morrison no-hit the Mudcats through five innings and the Pelicans hung on for the win.
Hitting Recap: Every Pelicans starter had at least one hit as CF Jeffrey Baez (.235) doubled, tripled, and knocked in two runs. LF Charcer Burks (.243) was 2-for-3 with a RBI while C Erick Castillo and SS Andrew Ely had two hits each. 3B David Bote (.315), 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.249), and RF Daniel Spingola (.208) all plated runs.
Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (1-0, 1.38 ERA) was perfect through the first five innings, needing only 49 pitches to put away the Braves. A leadoff single in the sixth broke up the no-hitter and a ground-rule double put Carolina on the board. The first two hitters of the eighth reached and Morrison’s night ended, although both inherited runners came around to score. The right-hander finished with a line of 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. He threw 86 pitches, 59 for strikes, recorded 12 ground ball outs and had a game score of 70. Tommy Nance allowed two inherited runners to score as the right-hander issued two walks and a bases loaded double off the top of the wall. Midwest League—Low A—Fort Wayne (Padres) 2, South Bend 1
Fort Wayne pitching kept the Cubs in check to even the series.
Hitting Recap: Cubs were scoreless for eight innings. In the ninth, 3B Matt Rose (.206) singled, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single from 1B Tyler Alamo (.246). LF Roberto Caro (.231) singled but SS Andruw Monasterio (.157) grounded into a force play to end the game.
Pitching Chart: Casey Bloomquist (7-6, 2.88 ERA) had a quality start as the right-hander allowed two runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings. Bloomquist threw 69 pitches, 47 for strikes, and recorded 12 ground ball outs. Kyle Twomey gave up a hit and a walk over 2.1 frames to go along with four strikeouts.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Vancouver (Blue Jays) 8, Eugene 4
Vancouver scored three times in the seventh and the ninth to beat the Ems.
Hitting Recap: Ems took a 2-0 lead in the second when SS Zack Short (.292) lined a pitch over the left-field fence for a two-run homer, his first as a professional. They regained the lead in the fifth as LF Kevonte Mitchell (.230) walked, stolen second, moved to third on a single and scored on a sacrifice bunt by CF Darryl Wilson (.237). Short added a RBI single in the eighth and finished 2-for-4. Mitchell had two hits, including a double.
Pitching Chart: Bailey Clark made his NWL debut on Thursday night. The Cubs fifth-round pick out of Duke appeared in two games in Mesa, tossing five shutout innings with four strikeouts. Clark’s fastball was sitting 93-95 in the first inning and the right-hander went 2.2 frames, allowing two runs on four hits with five punchouts. M.T. Minacci kept the Canadians off the board for 1.1 frames, striking out three. Tyson Miller, the Cubs fourth-round pick in June, made his NWL debut, and tossed two shutout innings but didn’t make it out of the seventh, getting charged with two runs on four hits. Dakota Mekkes allowed both inherited runners to score and the Canadians added an unearned run off the right-hander before the third out. Alex Santana surrendered three runs in the ninth.
Emeralds Notes: Dylan Cease returns to the mound on Friday night and will turn the ball over to Duncan Robinson in the piggy-back start......RHP Jordan Brink has been assigned to Mesa.....Pitchers Tyson Miller (4th round), Bailey Clark (5th round) and Jed Carter (15th round), all 2016 draft picks, have been promoted from Mesa to Eugene.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 4, Padres 3
Cubs scored three times in the eighth to rally past the Padres.
Hitting Recap: Cubs took advantage of two errors in the eighth as DH Gustavo Polanco (.355), Kevin Zamudio (.220) and C Jhonny Pereda (.239) all got credit for RBI. SS Isaac Paredes (.287) added a RBI single in the sixth. Zamuido finished 2-for-4 as all seven of the Cubs hits were singles.
Pitching Chart: After making 10 relief appearances and earning a pair of saves, Eugenio Palma got his first pro start and tossed five solid innings, holding the Padres to one run on three hits and two walks. He fanned three and had a game score of 60. Nathan Sweeney got charged with an unearned run in his inning of work while Michael Rucker got the win his pro debut, fanning two in a scoreless seventh. Holden Cammack kept the Padres off the board in the eighth and Luis Aquino earned his fourth save despite allowing a run in the ninth.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (2), Mets 1 (1)
Jose Rojas delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Cubs the win over the Mets.
Hitting Recap: 2B Orian Nunez (IFA15-DR, .272) drew a one-out walk in the ninth and advanced to third on a single by C Raymond Pena (IFA14-DR, .125) and a throwing error. 3B Jose Rojas (IFA14-V) followed with a line drive to left to give the Cubs the walk-off win. Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first when LF Jose Jules (IFA14-DR, .217) walked, stole second and scored on a wild pitch from second.
Pitching Chart: Three Cubs pitchers combined to hold the Mets to three hits. Andres Bonalde (IFA14-V) tossed six strong innings, allowing a run on three hits and two walks. The 6-foot-6 left-hander fanned five, got nine ground ball outs and had a game score of 68. Luis Silva (IFA15-V) worked around three walks in two scoreless and Edison Novas (IFA15-DR, 2-0, 4.40 ERA) got the win in relief with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Dominican Summer League— Twins (7), Cubs 2 (4)
Twins scored four times in the bottom of the eighth to beat the Cubs for the second straight day.
Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 4-3 lead in the seventh on a RBI single from SS Aramis Ademan (IFA15-DR, .242) scoring 2B Ronaldo Lopez (IFA14-DR, .145), who reached on a single. Ademan finished 2-for-4 with two RBI while 3B Luis Diaz (IFA15-DR, .272) went 2-for-5 with a triple and a RBI.
Pitching Chart: Emilio Ferrebus (IFA14-V) got the start and went four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. Fauris Guerrero (IFA1-DR, 303, 3.00 ERA) worked three shutout frames but the first three batters of the eighth all reached and scored. Luiz Escanio (IFA12-DR) allowed one inherited runner to cross home and the Twins added another run before the eighth was over.
