Paulino honored by NWL
Jose Paulino was named the Northwest League Player of the Month for July. The left-hander went 4-0 in four starts with a 0.72 ERA and 27 K in 25 innings. After six starts in the NWL, the 21-year-old was promoted to South Bend on July 25. Signed as part of the Cubs 2011 IFA class, Paulino is in his fifth season with the Cubs organization, the last three stateside.
Cubs make several moves
Getting caught up on the Cubs recent moves. After his Cubs debut against the Mariners, Brian Matusz was designated for assignment, cleared waivers and was outright to Iowa. He can still reject the option and declare for free agency.....The Cubs have released LHP Clayton Richard, who was signed by the Padres.....The Cubs also designated RHP Joe Nathan for assignment after activating Jorge Soler from the disabled list.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, New Orleans (Marlins) 1
I-Cubs collected 14 hits in the win to earn the series split with New Orleans.
Hitting Recap: 2B Logan Watkins (.291) went 3-for-5, stole home, and knocked in two runs to lead the offense. 1B Taylor Davis (.261) had three hits and plated a run while CF John Andreoli (.258) had two hits, scored twice and added a RBI. RF Bijan Rademacher (.231) singled twice.
Pitching Chart: Trevor Cahill made his fifth start at Iowa and went 3.1 shutout innings, throwing 68 pitches, 36 for strikes. The right-hander allowed four hits, walked two and set two down on strikes. RH Pierce Johnson continues to work out of the bullpen and gave up a run over 1.2 innings. C.J. Riefenhauser (2-1, 4.85 ERA) worked around three walks in the sixth and got credit for the win while Felix Pena fanned four in two scoreless. Jose Rosario kept the Zephyrs off the board in the ninth with a pair of punchouts.
I-Cubs Notes: Oklahoma City and Yasiel Puig come to Des Moines and the Cubs have not named a starter.
Southern League—AA—Montgomery (Rays) 7, Tennessee 5
Biscuits roughed up Cubs pitching for 12 hits and scored in five different innings.
Hitting Recap: 3B Jason Vosler ripped a RBI double in his first AA at-bat to score a run in the second and finished the night 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. SS Carlos Penalver and CF Trey Martin added RBI as the Smokies collected seven hits.
Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng (5-5, 3.44 ERA) didn’t make it out of the fifth as he departed after the first four hitters reached. The Biscuits scored in four of the five innings and Tseng finished with a line of 4 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 K. The 21-year-old right-hander threw 86 pitches, 50 for strikes, and recorded six ground ball outs. Starling Peralta allowed an inherited runner to score on a single in the fifth and got the next three outs without any more damage. Smokies News: Michael Wagner (2-0, 2.05 ERA) gets the ball for the Smokies on Sunday......The Smokies placed IF Chesny Young on the disabled list and 3B Jason Vosler has been promoted from Myrtle Beach. In 93 games with the Pelicans, the 22-year-old hit .254/.325/.359 with 25 doubles, two homers and 39 RBI. The Cubs 16th round pick in 2014 had been on the disabled list since July 22.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 4, Carolina (Braves) 3—11 innings
Charcer Burks delivered a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th to give the Pelicans their eighth straight win.
Hitting Recap: Pelicans loaded the bases in the 11th and LF Charcer Burks (.249) looped a liner to left for walk-off win. Burks was on base five times with three hits and two walks. 2B Bryant Flete (.391) and CF Jeffrey Baez (.236) had two hits each while 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.249) smacked his 16th homer.
Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null battled for six innings, allowing three runs in the 90-pitch outing. The right-hander gave up four hits, walked two and fanned two for a game score of 57. RH Daury Torrez blanked the Mudcats for three innings and Ryan McNeil (1-1, 2.20 ERA) tossed two scoreless to earn the win.
Pelicans News: Myrtle Beach has not named a starter for Sunday.....Jason Vosler, who had been on the DL since July 22, has been activated and promoted to AA Tennessee.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Great Lakes (Dodgers) 4
Eloy Jimenez scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth to give the Cubs the win.
Hitting Recap: With the game tied at 4-4, LF Eloy Jimenez (.337) was hit by a pitch and then scored after three wild pitches. Cubs tied the game in the fourth on a RBI single from RF Eddy Martinez (.269) and the Cuban native gave the Cubs the lead in the sixth with another run-scoring single. 3B Matt Rose (D15-11th, .207) followed with a two-run double for a 4-1 Cubs advantage.
Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay (4.40 ERA) turned in a quality outing as he held the Loons to one run over six innings. Alzolay fanned five, gave up four hits, walked one, and recorded seven fly ball outs for a game score of 62. Carson Sands made his second appearance second since coming back from the DL. The lefty worked a 1-2-3 seventh and then couldn’t find the strike zone in the eighth as he walked the first three hitters before departing. Tanner Griggs walked the first batter he faced on four pitches to cut the lead to 4-2. A sac fly trimmed the lead to one and a ground out tied the score. Griggs (2-1, 2.63 ERA) got out of the eighth without any more damage and then worked a 1-2-3 ninth as Connor Myers made a diving catch in center to end the game.
SB-Cubs News: Justin Steele (4-5, 5.30 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound Sunday afternoon at Four Winds Field.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 5, Vancouver (Blue Jays) 4
Eugene grabbed a 5-0 lead and hung on for the win.
Hitting Recap: Ems took a 2-0 lead in the second on a RBI single from LF Michael Foster (.176) and a run-scoring double off the bat of CF Darryl Wilson (.253). 2B Stephen Bruno, making his first rehab start, walked and scored on a wild pitch in the third. Bruno finished 1-for-2 with a walk. Wilson took a pitch deep over the right-field wall for a two-run blast in the fourth, his third of the year. 3B Wladimir Galindo (.231) and SS Zack Short (.308) both went 2-for-4.
Pitching Chart: LH Manuel Rondon (5-0) was acquired from the Angles last summer and after appearing in eight games in the Arizona Rookie League in 2015, earned a spot in Eugene’s rotation. Making his eighth start, the 21-year-old lowered his ERA to 1.43, striking out seven over five shutout innings. He allowed three hits, walked two and had a game score of 67. Jed Carter, Cubs 15th round pick in June, tossed a scoreless inning of relief in his NWL debut. Tyler Peitzmeier got charged with four runs, only one earned, in 1.1 innings and Michael Knighton got the final four outs for his third save.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs
Cubs had the day off.
Dominican Summer League— Rangers 1 (11), Cubs 1 (1)
Rangers (38-14) collected 14 hits in the route over the Cubs (21-32).
Pitching Chart: Freddy Tineo (IFA14-V, 2-3, 3.98 ERA) went three innings and took the loss, surrendering three runs in the third, two coming on a homer. Edison Novas (IFA15-DR) allowed a run over three frames and Fernando Calderon (IFA15-DR) got charged with seven runs over the final two innings.
Dominican Summer League—Giants 5, Cubs 2 (4)
Giants (32-22) scored two in the top of the ninth and plated the game-winner in the eleventh to rally past the Cubs (30-24).
Hitting Recap: Cubs had 13 hits and drew seven walks but could only score four times. C Miguel Amaya (IFA15-Pan, .263) and 1B Richard Nunez (IFA13-DR, .281) both had three hits and a RBI while DH Abraham Rodriguez (IFA15-Pan., .282) went 3-for-5 and scored twice. RF Fidel Matos (IFA13-DR, .234) collected two hits and a RBI.
Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia (IFA14-M, 1.73 ERA) fired six strong innings, holding the Giants to two hits and an unearned run. He fanned two and had a game score of 71. Bryan Molina (IFA14-V) got charged with an unearned run in .2 innings and Yan De La Cruz (FA15-DR) got charged with a blown save and took the loss, giving up three runs in four innings of relief. Robert Severino (FA15-DR) got the final out.
