Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa
Iowa (51-68) had Thursday off and head to the west coast for an eight-game road trip—four in Fresno and four in Sacramento. Iowa’s playoff hopes are very slim as they trail first place Oklahoma City (65-52) by fifteen games.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee, Pensacola (Reds)
Game was suspended by rain in the bottom of the second with Pensacola leading 1-0 and will be competed as part of a double header on Friday night. Jen-Ho Tseng (5-5, 3.44 ERA) is scheduled to start the second game.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 3, Salem (Red Sox) 2
Pelicans gabbed an early 3-0 lead and hung on for the win to take the series.
Hitting Recap: Pelicans took a 1-0 lead in the second when 3B Jesse Hodges (.235) doubled, took third on SS Andrew Ely’s single and beat the throw home on a ground ball off the bat of C Erick Castillo (.202). 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.252) swatted his 18th homer to lead off the third and Ely (.235) added a RBI single before the inning was over.
Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison held the Red Sox to a solo homer over 6.2 innings to earn his second CL win. The right-hander got seven ground ball outs, fanned four and had a game score of 59 in the 88-pitch outing. Tommy Nance tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Ryan McNeil earned his 19th save but gave up a solo homer in the ninth. C Erick Castillo threw out five runners in the win.
Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (10-5, 3.88 ERA) gets the start on Friday night as the Pelicans head to Carolina.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 7, Dayton (Reds) 4
Oscar De La Cruz no-hit Dayton for five innings and the Cubs used a four-run first to take the series opener.
Hitting Recap: Cubs had 10 hits in the win as SS Andruw Monasterio (.193) and CF Connor Myers (.188) both went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.325) returned to the lineup for the first time since Aug. 3 and had two hits, drew a walk, and knocked in a run. LF Eloy Jimenez (.334) was 1-for-4 with a RBI (73).
Pitching Chart: Oscar De La Cruz (1-0, 0.61 ERA) allowed a walk and a hit batter over five innings as the right-hander fanned six in his third MWL start. He threw 76 pitches, 57 for strikes, for a game score of 74. Tanner Griggs blanked the Dragons for three innings with two strikeouts. Dillon Maples allowed four runs in the ninth on three hits and a walk.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 7, Salem-Keizer (Giants) 4
Eugene won his seventh straight as the Ems smacked three homers.
Hitting Recap: C Marcus Mastrobuoni (.245) went 3-for-3 and slugged his third homer, a three-run shot in the sixth. LF Chris Pieters (.295) and RF Kevonte Mitchell (.238) both blasted solo homers in the eighth. 3B Wladimir Galindo (.249) ripped a pair of doubles and scored twice,
Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease fanned six and worked into the fourth in the 58-pitch outing, 37 for strikes. Cease allowed an unearned run on three hits and a walk for a game score of 55. Duncan Robinson (2-0, 2.31 ERA) fanned four over 2.2 scoreless frames and got credit for the win. Andin Diaz and Jed Carter both pitched an inning and Michael Knighton picked up his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.
Emeralds Notes: Manuel Rondon (5-0, 1.43 ERA) makes his ninth start on Friday night as the Ems head to Spokane for a five-game series.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs
Cubs had the day off.
Hitting Recap: 19-year-old catcher Gustavo Polanco (IFA14-V) leads the Cubs in hitting with a .349 average but only has four extra base hits in 126 at-bats. OF Luis Ayala (IFA13-V) leads the team with 12 stolen bases and sports a .290/.333/.391 slash over 33 games. SS Isaac Paredes (IFA15-M) got off to a slow start but is hitting .282/.341/.385 in his first pro season. Cubs most productive bat has been 1B/3B Kevin Zamudio, who leads the team with four homers and 21 RBI while hitting .245/.297/.490. OF Kwang-Min Kwon (IFA15-SK) made his pro debut and is 4-for-15 over his first five games.
Pitching Chart: It should be pointed out that all of these arms are on a pitch count and for some, may not throw more than two innings in any outing. So you shouldn’t read too much into who’s starting but pay more attention to innings pitched at this level. Throw in pitchers getting in their rehab innings and its easy to see why 33 different arms (and counting) have taken the mound for the Cubs.
Yapson Gomez (3-1, 2.67 ERA, 1.07 WHIP) leads the pitching staff with 33.2 innings and strikeouts (41) but all of his work has come in rifle, throwing multiple innings. Eugenio Palma (2-0, 1.67 ERA, 0.99 WHIP) is second with 32.1 frames but ten of his 12 appearances have come out of the bullpen. Javier Assad (2-1, 3.03 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) has recorded 37 strikeouts over 29.2 innings in his first season with the Cubs organization after signing out of Mexico last summer.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (4), Indians (2)
Cubs blanked the Tribe over the first eight frames.
Hitting Recap: RF Jonathan Sierra (IFA15-DR, .269) had a pair of doubles and knocked in a run while CF Jose Gutierrez (IFA15-V, .251) had two hits, scored once and knocked in a run. LF Jose Jules (IFA14-DR, .210) went 2-for-4 and 3B Orian Nunez (IFA15-DR, .272) added a RBI sacrifice fly.
Pitching Chart: Andres Bonalde got the start and tossed four shutout frames, striking out two while allowing a hit and three walks. Freddy Tineo got the win with two scoreless, striking out a pair. Moises Ramirez went three innings and got charged with two unearned runs in the ninth.
Dominican Summer League— Mariners (7), Cubs 2 (1)
Mariners (38-19) pitching kept the Cubs (32-26) in check on four hits.
