News, Notes and Game Recaps from Aug. 13

Donnie Dewees had four hits and help lead Myrtle Beach to a wild 11-inning win at Carolina on Saturday night. Eugene made it nine straight as Wladimir Galindo knocked in four runs.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 9, Fresno (Astros) 5

Cubs used a five-run fourth to down the Grizzlies.

Hitting Recap: 3B Jeimer Candelario (.306) went 3-for-5 and knocked in three runs to lead the offense. Tim Federowicz (.286) had two hits, including a two-run homer in the seventh, and 1B Logan Watkins (.280) added a two-run triple in the Cubs five-run fourth.

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny (7-3, 4.33 ERA) battled for five innings, needing 86 pitches to qualify for the win. The lefty fanned nine and allowed five runs on six hits, including a pair of homers for a game score of 38. The bullpen was lights out. Felix Pena blanked the Grizzlies for two innings while Jose Rosario and Spencer Patton both tossed a scoreless frame.

I-Cubs Notes: Drew Rucinski (6-12, 5.96 ERA) gets the start on Sunday night.

Southern League—AA—Pensacola (Reds) 4, Tennessee 2

Pensacola scored three times in the bottom of the second and beat the Smokies despite only three hits.

Hitting Recap: Smokies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on doubles by 2B Ian Happ (.266) and 3B Jason Vosler (.333). Happ added a sacrifice fly in the seventh and finished 2-for-4. 1B Benjamin Carhart (.247) and SS Carlos Penalver (.212) both had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Michael Wagner (2-1, 3.82 ERA) held Pensacola to three hits and fanned six over six innings but gave up a three-run homer in the second and a solo shot in the third. Wagner threw 74 pitches and had a game score of 50. James Farris and Nick Sarianides both threw a scoreless inning.

Smokies News: Brad Markey (6-7, 3.08 ERA) toes the rubber on Sunday evening for his 21st start of season.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 7, Carolina (Braves) 6—11 innings

Myrtle Beach took the lead in the ninth, tenth and finally held on and won it in the 11th. 

Hitting Recap: Trailing 4-2 heading into the ninth, the Pelicans got the first two runners on and after two outs, CF Donnie Dewees (.329) ripped a triple to center to tie the game. 1B David Bote (.311) followed with a RBI single. PH Ian Rice gave the Pelicans a 6-5 lead in the tenth with a sacrifice fly. In the 11th, Dewees singled, took second on a walk to Bote, stole third and scored the eventual winning run on a ground out by 2B Bryant Flete (.348). Dewees finished the night 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI. Bote, RF Jeffrey Baez (.243), Jesse Hodges (.259), and SS Andrew Ely (.238) all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null held the Braves to one run over six solid innings, scattering eight hits while striking out seven. Null threw 81 pitches, 54 for strikes, and had a a game score of 64. Every Pelicans reliever got charged with a blown save. Scott Effross gave up three runs in the eighth as Carolina took a 4-2 lead. Craig Brooks surrendered the tying run in the ninth and was charged with a run in the tenth. Daniel Lewis (2-0, 4.05 ERA) couldn’t hold Carolina in the tenth but got out of the 11th after the Braves had runners on second and third with one out.

Pelicans News: James Pugliese (5-4, 3.43 ERA) makes his fourth start for the Pelicans.

Midwest League—Low A—Dayton (Reds) 13, South Bend 0

Dayton scored eight times in the first to even the series with South Bend.

Hitting Recap: Cubs were held to four hits, including doubles from C Tyler Alamo (.248) and CF Connor Myers (.246). 3B Matt Rose (.222) extended his hit streak to 11 games with a single.

Pitching Chart: The Dragons hit for the cycle in the first inning, chasing Justin Steele after the lefty only got two outs. The Dragons ripped eight hits, including a three-run homer, as they scored eight times. Greyfer Eregua came in and got the final out in the first with one on. Eregua fanned four over 3.1 scoreless but Carson Sands got tagged for four runs in the fifth. Tanner Griggs allowed a run over two innings and Pedro Araujo worked a scoreless eighth in his first game back in the MWL.

SB-Cubs News: Jose Paulino (2-0, 1.89 ERA) gets the ball Sunday afternoon in Dayton.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 9, Spokane (Rangers) 3

Eugene ran their win streak to nine straight with a 12-hit attack.

Hitting Recap: 3B Wladimir Galindo (.261) went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI to lead the offense. Galindo is batting .385 over his last 10 games with 11 RBI. RF Kevonte Mitchell (.243) was 3-for-5 with a RBI while LF Chris Pieters (.293) had two hits, plated two runs, scored three times and stole his 17th base. CF Darryl Wilson (.255) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base (11).

Pitching Chart: Pedro Silverio got the start and lasted 3.2 innings, allowing a run on four hits and a walk in the 71-pitch outing. Silverio fanned four and surrendered a homer for a game score of 45. Tyler Peitzmeier (1-0, 1.50 ERA) got the win in relief, surrendering a run over 2.1 innings. Josh Conway fanned three and gave up a run in two innings while Wyatt Short worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

Emeralds Notes: Bryan Hudson (2-3, 4.05 ERA) makes his tenth start for Eugene on Sunday night in Spokane.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 3, Giants 2

Cubs scored three times in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off win.

Hitting Recap: LF Yohan Matos (.235) ripped a RBI single to left to score RF Ruben Reyes (.216) and give the Cubs the comeback win. They tied the game in the ninth when 3B Kevin Zamudio (.245) doubled and scored on 1B Jhonny Pereda’s second homer of the season. Cubs had 11 hits in the win but were shutout the first eight frames. Pereda (.295) finished 3-for-4 while Matos, SS Isaac Paredes (.288), and Zamudio all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Stephen Fife made another rehab start and gave up a run on a hit and a walk over two innings. Matt Swarmer got charged with an unearned run over three frames and Jordan Brink tossed a pair of shutout innings. Michael Rucker (2-0, 0.00 ERA) fanned three over the final two frames and earned the win.

Dominican Summer League— Yankees 1 (10), Cubs 1 (7) 

Yankees broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the eighth.

Hitting Recap: LF Jose Gutierrez (.259) went 3-for-5 with a triple and a RBI while SS Rafael Narea (.261) had two doubles, scored once and knocked in a run. 1B Luis Hidalgo (.225) slugged his ninth homer, a solo shot, and 3B Yonathan Perlaza (.262) had two hits, scored twice and added a RBI (17).

Pitching Chart: Riger Fernandez only allowed one hit over four innings but walked five and got charged with a pair of unearned runs. Juan Rengifo gave up four runs in three frames and Luis Silva (0-1, 7.90 ERA) took the loss, surrendering four runs. Elvis Diaz got the final three outs and stranded two inherited runners. 

Dominican Summer League— Dodgers 1 (2), Cubs 2 (1)

Dodgers scored twice in the fifth and downed the Cubs as they were held to four hits.

Hitting Recap: Cubs only run came in the sixth with two outs when DH Miguel Amaya (.253) walked, stole second (7) and scored on a single to center by 2B Luis Diaz (.269). Diaz finished 2-for-4 while SS Aramis Ademan (.247) and 1B Abraham Rodriguez (.267) both singled.

Pitching Chart: Alfredo Colorado recorded seven ground ball outs and blanked the Dodgers over four innings, allowing three hits and three walks while fanning five.  Game score 57. Omar Ventura (1-2, 5.63 ERA) gave up two runs in the fifth and tossed three innings, surrendering four hits and two walks. Robert Severino threw a scoreless eighth.
