Tommy La Stella returns
2B Tommy La Stella has reported to AA Tennessee and was in the line-up on Wednesday night as the Smokies hosted Jacksonville. La Stella was optioned to Iowa back on July 29 but didn’t report as he was contemplating retirement, according to reports. La Stella hit .295/.388/.457 in 51 games for Chicago but had his playing time reduced with the return of Jorge Soler and the emergence of Javier Baez.

Quick review of some of the minor leaguers sent elsewhere in trades during the past year. State are through Tuesdays games. 1B Daniel Vogelbach is hitting .195/.381/.310 in 26 games for Tacoma while RHP Paul Blackburn has appeared in five games for AA Jackson (4 starts) going 1-1 with a 4.57 ERA in 21.2 innings......SS Gleyber Torres is hitting .227/.333/.333 in 19 games with Tampa in the FSL and teammate OF Rashad Crawford sports a slash of .229/.308/.243 in 18 games. OF Billy McKinney only hit one homer in 88 games for the Smokies but already has two in 17 games for AA Trenton. McKinney is hitting .237/.318/.373 for the Thunder.....RHP Jesus Castillo (Joe Smith trade with Angles) is 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA in three starts for Class A Burlington in the MWL. 2B Frandy Delarosa (Spencer Patton trade with Texas) is hitting .247/.326/.332 in 100 games for Hickory in the South Atlantic League. LHP Wander Cabrera, sent to the Rockies for Rex Brothers, was named to the DSL all-star game earlier this year and is 5-0 with a 2.68 ERA in 10 starts..... Arismendy Alcantara (Chris Coghlan trade with A’s) is hitting .291/.337/.484 with five homers and five triples in 43 games for AAA Nashville. Oakland called Alcantara to the big leagues on July 20 but only stuck around to play five games 3-for-13 before returning to Nashville.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 8, Sacramento (Giants) 7
Iowa scored six times in the fifth and hung on for their fifth straight win.
Hitting Recap: 3B Jeimer Candelario (.308) smacked his 7th homer and finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. 2B Logan Watkins (.282) had two hits and plated two while RF Juan Perez (.281) singled twice with a RBI. C Taylor Davis (.258) went 2-for-3 and knocked in a run.
Pitching Chart: Stephen Fife returned to mound for Iowa on Wednesday night after going on the DL May 24 and finishing a three-game (8 IP) rehab stint in the AZL. The right-hander, who missed last year due to Tommy John surgery, went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk. Fife fanned four in the 59-pitch outing, 35 for strikes. Miguel Mejia allowed three runs on six hits over two innings. Armando Rivero only got one out in the seventh, surrendering a run on two hits and two walks. Felix Pena (3-4, 3.41 ERA) got credit for the win, blanking the River Cats over the final 2.2 innings and stranding three inherited runners in the seventh.
I-Cubs Notes: Rob Zastryzny (7-3, 4.33 ERA) makes his 15th AAA start on Thursday night at Sacramento. Between Tennessee and Iowa, Zastryzny has thrown a career-high 135.2 innings (110 IP in 2014) with 119 K and a 1.24 WHIP.....IF Stephen Bruno, RHP Stephen Fife and LHP Joe Thatcher have been added to the I-Cubs roster. Chicago Cubs outfielder Chris Coghlan was placed on the 15-day DL with a rib contusion and the Cubs recalled RHP Spencer Patton.
Southern League—AA—Jacksonville (Marlins) 5, Tennessee 1
Suns collected 14 hits and took the series opener form the Smokies.
Hitting Recap: Smokies only run scored in the fourth when RF Ian Happ (.276) singled, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by 3B Jason Vosler (.273). Happ finished 3-for-3 with a walk. 2B Tommy La Stella singled in his first at-bat and was hit by a pitch in his ankle in the his second trip to the plate in the third. La Stella stayed in the game and was replaced by Daniel Lockhart in the top of the fifth.
Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina (4-11, 5.46 ERA) got roughed up for 11 hits over 5.1 innings, allowing four runs, two coming on solo homers. Skulina fanned three and threw 97 pitches, 60 for strikes. Starling Peralta worked 1.2 scoreless frames, James Farris gave up a run in the eighth, and Jack Leathersich worked a 1-2-3 ninth.
Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng (5-6, 3.77 ERA, 90.2 IP, 55 K, 1.44 WHIP) takes the hill for his 19th start on Thursday night against Jacksonville.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Winston-Salem (White Sox) 5
Pelicans scored three times in the first and hung on to beat the Dash for the third straight night.
Hitting Recap: 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.259) went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored while SS Andrew Ely (.247) had two hits and scored once. LF Charcer Burks (.248) had a pair of doubles and scored twice while 3B David Bote (.319), CF Jeffrey Baez (.245) and RF Daniel Spingola (.214) all plated runs. Bote threw out a runner at home on a slow grounder in the ninth to help preserve the win.
Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (3-0, 2.19 ERA) cruised through five innings (retiring 12 straight) but couldn’t get an out in the sixth as the first four batters reached, three eventually scoring. The right-hander gave up three hits and three walks to go along with six strikeouts. Morrison had a game score of 56, got seven ground ball outs and threw 79 pitches, 46 for strikes. Craig Brooks tossed two shutout frames and Ryan McNeil worked a scoreless eighth but surrendered two runs in the ninth and couldn't close it out. Tommy Nance got the final two outs for his second save.
Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (11-5, 4.02 ERA, 121 IP, 74 K, 1.26 WHIP) faces the Dash on Thursday night.
Midwest League—Low A—Bowling Green (Rays) 8, South Bend 5
Bowling Green jumped out an early 6-0 lead and downed the Cubs.
Hitting Recap: Cubs used the long ball for their runs. DH Adonis Paula (.187) smacked a two-run homer in the fourth and 3B Matt Rose (.217) added a three-run bomb in the fifth. SS Andruw Monasterio (.189) and C Alberto Mineo (.235) both doubled.
Pitching Chart: Oscar De La Cruz (1-1, 3.57 ERA) only lasted three innings, allowing six run on eight hits and a walk. The right-hander fanned four in the 65-pitch outing and threw two wild pitches. RH Greyfer Eregua got charged with an unearned run over three innings and LH John Williamson gave up a run over the final two frames.
SB-Cubs News: Adbert Alzolay (8-4, 4.19 ERA, 105.1 IP, 71 K, 1.22 WHIP) takes the mound on Thursday night against Bowling Green for his 19th start......C Samuel Tidaback has been promoted from Eugene to South Bend. The Cubs 21st round pick from North Georgia and a Chicago area native made his pro debut in the Arizona Rookie League and after three game saws promoted to Eugene. In 10 games for the Ems, the 22-year-old hit .216/.279/.405 and slugged his first pro homer......RHP Duane Underwood has joined the team to continue his rehab and RHP Tanner Griggs has been placed on the temporary inactive list.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 3, Boise (Rockies) 2
Ems flirted with a no-hitter until the seventh and walked off for their 13th straight win.
Hitting Recap: Trent Giambrone’s RBI single in bottom of the ninth gave the Ems their 13th straight win. Kevonte Mitchell led off with a double and scored on the two-out game winner. Eugene tied the game in the 8th when Giambrone walked, stole second with two outs and scored on Darryl Wilson’s RBI single. Ems took a 1-0 lead in the sixth on a RBI double from Chris Pieters. Mitchell and Giambrone both finished with two hits.
Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease got the start on Friday night and went 3.2 innings, fanning eight in the 77-pitch outing. Cease walked three and didn’t allow a hit. Duncan Robinson got the final out of the fourth, standing an inherited runner. The Cubs ninth-round pick in June kept the no hitter going until a single in the seventh. Robinson finished with a line of 3 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K. Josh Conway got the final out of the seventh but walked in two runs. Tyler Peitzmeier (2-0, 1.29 ERA) worked the fail two scoreless frames and got the win.
Emeralds Notes: Bailey Clark was scheduled to pitch on Tuesday night but Tyson Miller got the ball instead.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 15, White Sox 7
Cubs out-slugged the White Sox.
Hitting Recap: SS Isaac Paredes had a career-night, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, his first pro homer and five RBI. DH Gustavo Polanco was 3-for-3 with three doubles and four RBI as the 3-4 hitters destroyed White Sox pitching. Tolly Filotei was 3-for-4, scored four times and knocked in a pair.
Pitching Chart: Erick Leal made his first rehab start after going on the DL July 21. The right-hander got charged with an unearned run on a hit with two strikeouts in his only inning. Eugenio Palma tossed five innings and got credit for the win, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks. Holden Cammack pitched 1-2-3 seventh and Luis Aquino worked the final two frames, giving up a run.
Dominican Summer League—Game 1—Completion of Aug. 17 game, Cubs 1 (5), Rangers 1 (4); Game 2— Rangers 1 (2), Cubs 1 (1)
Cubs scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the opener and dropped the night-cap.
Hitting Recap: GAME 1—2B Yonathan Perlaza (IFA15-V, .272) for the rally started the four-run seventh with a single and cored when Jonathan Sierra (IFA15-DR, .269) tripled. LF Jose Jules (IFA14-DR, .220) doubled home Sierra and scored on the Cubs third straight extra base hit, a double from 3B Orian Nunez (IFA15-DR, .273). DH Henderson Perez (IFA15-V, .202) followed with a RBI single to five the Cubs a 5-4 lead. Cubs only had one other hit the rest of the game. GAME 2—Only five hits for the Cubs and their only run of the game came in the ninth on a solo homer by C Raymond Pena (IFA15-V, .136).
Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Jose Mac Donna pitched into the sixth before the game was suspended, getting charged with two unearned runs on a hit and two walks. Juan Rengifo worked the final four innings and got credit for the win, yielding two runs on five hits and three walks. GAME 2— Brailyn Marquez (IFA15-DR, 4-2, 1.42) took the loss but only allowed two runs )one earned) over five innings and had a game score of 54. The 17-year-old left-hander allowed five hits, walked one, got seven ground ball outs and fanned two. Luis Silva tossed two shutout innings of relief
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (2), Orioles 2 (0)
Faustino Carrera blanked the O’s for eight innings and an errant pickoff throw allowed both runs to score in the eighth.
Hitting Recap: Cubs only had four hits and needed two errors in the eighth to win. CF Fernando Kelli (IFA15-V, .264) reached on an error and took second on an infield single by DH Aramis Ademan (IFA15-DR, .242). A double steal and a walk loaded the bases, and with two outs, an errant pickoff throw allowed Kelli and Ademan to score. 3B Richard Nunez (IFA13-DR, .285) went 2-for-3 with a walk and Kelli singled.
Pitching Chart: Faustino Carrera (IFA15-M, 7-1, 1.03 ERA) continues to shut down DSL hitters. Making his 12th start, the 17-year-old allowed five hits in eight shutout innings and fanned six. The left-hander has 51 K over 69.2 innings and is holding hitters to a .209 average and sports a 0.99 WHIP. Maikel Aguiar (IFA15-DR, 3.45 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.
