Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, Sacramento (Giants) 3
Iowa made it six-in-a-row as they scored three times in the first.
Hitting Recap: SS Munenori Kawasaki (.269) smacked his first career minor league homer, a two-run shot, and 3B Jeimer Candelario (.312) ripped a solo bomb, his eighth, as the I-Cubs gabbed a 3-0 led in the first. In the second, 2B Logan Watkins (.281) led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by RF John Andreoli (.254). C Tim Federowicz (.288) went 2-for-4 and Candelario added a single.
Pitching Chart: Recently signed right-hander Josh Collmenter made his I-Cubs debut on Thursday night and went two innings, allowing a run on a hit and four walks. LH Joe Thatcher struckout the side in the third in his Cubs debut. Gerardo Concepcion surrendered two runs in the fourth and worked a scoreless fifth. Pierce Johnson (3-6, 6.96 ERA) got the win with 2.2 shutout frames, striking out five while walking three. Corey Black got the final out of the eighth and Jose Rosario worked the ninth for his second save.

Southern League—AA—Jacksonville (Marlins) 11, Tennessee 7
The Smokies rallied late but couldn’t overcome an 11-1 deficit.
Hitting Recap: LF Chesny Young (.300) went 4-for-5, scored twice and added a RBI while C Victor Caratini (.297) had three hits and two RBI. Pinch-hitter Kelly Dugan (.237) launched a two-run homer in the eighth. 2B Ian Happ (.275) doubled, walked, swiped his fifth base and scored twice. Tommy La Stella didn’t play.
Pitching Chart: Rough outing for Jen-Ho Tseng (5-7, 4.05 ERA) as the right-hander got tagged for six runs on 10 hits over five innings. Tseng threw 76 pitches and had a game score of 29. David Berg gave up five runs (two earned) over 1.1 frames while R.J. Alvarez (1.2 IP) and David Garner (1 IP) kept the Suns off the board.
Smokies News: Michael Wagner (2-1, 3.82 ERA) gets the ball on Friday night as the Smokies look for their first win of the series.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach vs. Winston-Salem
Pelicans and the Dash were rained out and the game will not be made up as the two teams don’t play again this season. Jonathan Martinez (11-4, 4.02 ERA) gets the start on Friday night as Lynchburg comes to town.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 6, Bowling Green (Rays) 4
A solo homer by Matt Rose in the top of the eighth proved to be the difference.
Hitting Recap: Cubs tied the game in the sixth with three runs. 1B Matt Rose (.222) knocked in the first run with a single and SS Andruw Monasterio (.199) added a two-run single with the bases loaded. Rose then hit his tenth homer of the year with one-out in the eighth to give South Bend a 5-4 lead. 3B Vimael Machin (.220) provided some insurance in the ninth with a RBI double. C Alberto Mineo (.243), Rose, Machin and Monasterio all finished with two hits.
Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood’s rehab continued with South Bend on Thursday night as the right-hander got the start and threw 24 pitches, 14 for strikes. Underwood fanned two over two shutout innings. Adbert Alzolay (9-4, 4.32 ERA) got the win in relief, yielding four runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. Alzolay threw 79 pitches, 49 for strikes. Dillon Maples retired all six hitters he faced for his seventh save.
SB-Cubs News: Justin Steele (5-6, 6.07 ERA) gets the start on Friday night as the Cubs head to Lansing for a three-game series.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 1, Boise (Rockies) 0
Four Eugene pitchers blanked the Hawks as the Ems made it 14 in a row.
Hitting Recap: Only run of the game scored in the seventh. DH Trent Giambrone (.286) led off with a double and after two outs, scored on a double from CF Darryl Wilson (.271). Giambrone went 3-for-3 with two doubles and Wilson was 2-for-3 with two doubles. RF Kevonte Mitchell (.250) made a diving catch in the eighth to end the inning and prevent the tying run from scoring.
Pitching Chart: Manuel Rondon tossed six shutout frames, limiting the Hawks to five hits and a walk. Rondon recorded 11 ground ball outs and had a game score of 64 in the 63-pitch outing. Jed Carter won his first game as a pro, striking out the side in the seventh. Andin Diaz tossed a scoreless eighth and Wyatt Short worked around a hit and a walk in the ninth for his fifth save.

Arizona Rookie League—Reds 6, Cubs 2
Reds (25-22) used a three-run fifth to down the Cubs (22-24).
Hitting Recap: CF Tolly Filotei (.179) was hit-by-a-pitch in the second with the base loaded to force in the Cubs first run for a 1-0 lead. DH Gustavo Polanco (.323) added a RBI groundout in the eighth. 1B Jhonny Pereda (.298) was 2-for-4 with a double.
Pitching Chart: Pablo Ochoa got the start and went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk to go along with five strikeouts. Michael Rucker got charged with an unearned run over 2.2 frames. Nathan Sweeney only got one out in the eighth as he allowed a hit and walked two with two runs scoring. Jose Leidenz got the final five outs but did allow one of three inherited runners to score in the eighth.
Dominican Summer League— Rangers 1 (5), Cubs 1 (2)
Rangers made the most of their six hits and downed the Cubs.
Hitting Recap: Cubs had 10 hits but could only score twice in the seventh on a RBI ground out by 3B Orian Nunez (.272) and a RBI single from 1B Luis Hidalgo (.216). DH Henderson Perez (.239) went 3-for-4 while C Franklin Tineo (.243) and CF Jose Jules (.216) were both 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Pitching Chart: Andres Bonalde (1-6, 5.40 ERA) tossed five innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks. Fernando Calderon allowed two runs in the sixth and Miguel Estevez kept the Rangers off the board the final two frames.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (6), Orioles 2 (2)
Cubs plated five runs in the bottom of the seventh to knock off the Orioles.
Hitting Recap: 3B Ronaldo Lopez(.153) went 3-for-4 and delivered the go-ahead runs with a two-run double in the seventh. CF Fernando Kelli (.264), 2B Luis Diaz (.258) and LF Yovanny Cuevas (.227) all knocked in runs.
Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia (5-1, 1.67 ERA) held the O’s to three hits over seven innings, allowing an unearned run with four strikeouts. Game score 77. Omar Ventura worked the final two frames and surrendered a run in the eighth.null
