Cubs scored the game’s first six runs and won the series opener at Principal Park.
Hitting Recap: Cubs scored early and often and ended the game with 11 hits. CF John Andreoli (.259) went 3-for-3 with two walks and was a triple shy of the cycle, slugging his 12th homer to leadoff the first. RF Bijan Rademacher (.261) went 2-for-4 with two RBI while 3B Jeimer Candelario (.313) extended his on-base streak to 27 games with a single and two RBI. 1B Cael Brockmeyer (.228) had two hits, including a double.
Pitching Chart: Jordan Pries (5-3, 4.80 ERA) got the win, blanking the Red Birds on two hits over six innings. Pries needed 93 pitches and fanned six while issuing three walks for a game score of 72. Armando Rivero (2.14 ERA) worked a scoreless seventh and Joe Thatcher (4.32 ERA) only got two outs in the eight, getting charged with two runs on two hits. Corey Black (5.18 ERA) got the final out of the eight but not before allowing two inherited runners and another run to score. Jose Rosario (.2.25 ERA) tossed a scoreless ninth for his third save.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 9, Jacksonville (Marlins) 4
Smokies held a 8-0 lead after two innings and cruised to the win.
Hitting Recap: RF Lane Adams(.231) blasted a three-run homer in the first and C David Freitas (.279) delivered a three-run double in the second. LF Chesny Young (.302) went 3-for-4 and C Victor Caratini (.298) singled, walked, knocked in a run and scored twice. 2B Tommy La Stella was back in action and was on base three times with a single and two walks, scoring once.
Pitching Chart: Brad Markey (7-7, 3.15 ERA) held the Suns to one runs over six innings on four hits and two walks. The right-hander fanned six in the 100-pitch outing and recorded nine ground ball outs. Game score 67. David Garner (4.56 ERA) surrendered two runs in the sixth and Jack Leathersich (3.48 ERA) allowed a run in the seventh. James Farris (3.03 ERA) fanned two in a scoreless ninth.

Carolina League—High A—Lynchburg (Indians) 5, Myrtle Beach 4
Lynchburg scored four times in the fourth and beat the Pelicans for the second straight night.
Hitting Recap: Pelicans had 10 hits, led by 3B David Bote (.326), who went 3-for-4 with a triple, one knocked in and two runs scored. 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.258) and RF Daniel Spingola (.221) had two hits each while CF Donnie Dewees (.297) went 1-for-5 with a RBI.
Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null (3-5, 4.79 ERA) worked into the seventh in his 90-pitch outing, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks. The right-hander set five down on strikes and had a game score of 48. Tommy Thorpe (3.91 ERA) worked 1.2 scoreless and stranded an inherited runner while Daniel Lewis (3.52 ERA) tossed a scoreless ninth.
Pelicans News: James Pugliese (5-5, 4.32 ERA) makes his fifth start on Sunday and is 3-1 with a 4.95 ERA as a starter.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 12, Lansing (Blue Jays) 9
Matt Rose had a career-night as the Cubs evened the series at Lansing
Hitting Recap: 3B Matt Rose (.235) slugged his first career grand slam and knocked in a career-high five runs. The Cubs 11th round pick in 2015, Rose went 4-for-5 with two doubles, his 15th homer, and three runs scored. 2B Carlos Sepulveda is having a season that should put his name in the Cubs top prospects list as the 19-year-old upped his average to .323 with three hits and a RBI (23). 1B Alberto Mineo (.243) had two hits and scored twice while RF Eddy Martinez (.257) knocked in runs 63-64. DH Adonis Paula (.212) was 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Pitching Chart: Jose Paulino (3.78 ERA) had his worst outing of the season as the Lugnuts tagged the lefty for six runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings. Paulino threw 86 pitches, was called for a balk and uncorked a wild pitch. Game score 26. Paulino has thrown a career-high 64 innings. Pedro Araujo (2-0, 1.80 ERA) got the win in relief, fanning seven over three innings while allowing three runs. Dillon Maples (3.48 ERA) recorded his eighth save with two scoreless, fanning three as the Cubs had 16 K.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Everett (Mariners) 12, Eugene 1
Eugene saw its 15-game win streak come to an end as the Aqua Sox took the series opener.
Hitting Recap: Ems were blanked the first eight frames and avoided the shutout in the ninth with a sacrifice fly by C Marcus Mastrobuoni (.229). Only six hits for the Ems, two from 2B Yeiler Peguero (.261).
Pitching Chart: Bryan Hudson (3-4, 4.62 ERA) had problems with his command as the 6-foot-8 lefty walked five and gave up six hits that led to seven runs over 3.2 frames. Hudson threw 79 pitches, 41 for strikes, fanned five and had a game score of 24. M.T. Minacci (4.10 ERA) gave up five runs over 2.1 frames and allowed both inherited runners to score. Marc Huberman (0.93 ERA) was the lone bright spot on the mound, tossing three scoreless with three strikeouts.

Arizona Rookie League—Game 1—Completion of Aug. 8 Game—Cubs 7, D-Backs 0; Game 2—Cubs 3, D-Backs 2
Cubs swept the D-Backs.
Hitting Recap: GAME 1—It took 12 days but the Cubs beat Zach Greinke. After leading 1-0 after the game was called due to rain, the Cubs added six more runs. Michael Cruz (.288) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and DH Gustavo Polanco, 19, continues his assault on AZL pitching, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored to raise his average to .370 in his first season stateside and second as a pro. Tolly Filotei (.100) and 3B Jhonny Bethencourt (.234) both knocked in two runs. GAME 2—1B Kevin Zamudio (.240) went 2-for-3 with a RBI while 3B Rafael Mejia (.206) and Filotei both plated runs.
Pitching Chart: GAME 1— Tyson Miller got the start back on Aug. 8 and tossed three scoreless, allowing a hit and a walk. Pablo Ochoa (2.16 ERA) worked 1-2-3 fourth before the game was called. Erick Leal (1-0, 0.00 ERA) fanned three over two shutout frames when play resumed on Saturday night in his second rehab outing. Junior Marte (6.52 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 seventh and Jose Leidenz (8.00 ERA) blanked the D-Backs the final two frames. GAME 2—Andry Rondon (2-2, 7.09 ERA) tossed five solid innings and earned the win, allowing one run on three hits and a walk. Rondon fanned three and had a game score of 62. Holden Cammack (5.40 ERA) gave up a run in the sixth and Luis Aquino (5.47 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 seventh for his fifth save.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (3), Pirates (2)
Cubs pitching kept the Pirates off the board for seven straight innings and hung on in the ninth for the win.
Hitting Recap: Cubs grabbed the lead for good in the second on a two-run double by C Erick Gonzalez (IFA13-DR, .346). Yonathan Perlaza’s (IFA15-V, .252) sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 3-1. Gonzalez finished 2-for-3 while 3B Orian Nunez (IFA15-DR, .279) had two singles and scored once.
Pitching Chart: Yunior Perez (IAF15-DR, 4.44 ERA) got the start and only went one inning, allowing a run on two hits. Riger Fernandez (2-5, 4.86 ERA) worked five scoreless innings of relief, holding the Pirates to three hits and three walks while fanning two. Edison Novas (IFA15-DR, 4.32 ERA) gave up a run over the final three innings for his second save.
Dominican Summer League—Twins (5), Cubs 2 (4)
Twins smacked a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th after the Cubs took the lead in the top of the inning.
Hitting Recap: SS Aramis Ademan (IFA15-DR, .258) had a career-high five hits, including a pair of doubles, scored three times, and knocked in a run. Ademan swiped his 17th base but was caught twice. DH Miguel Amaya (IFA15-P, .246) went 2-for-4 with a RBI and RF Yovanny Cuevas (IFA14-DR, .230) was on base three times with two walks and a base hit.
Pitching Chart: Wilfre Delgado (IFA15-DR, 3.58 ERA) made his fifth start and went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Game score 55. Maikel Aguiar (IFA15-V, 3,44 ERA) allowed a run over 2.2 frames and Robert Severino (FA15-DR, 2.57 ERA) gave up a run in 2.1 innings. Fauris Guerrero (IFA14-DR, 4-4, 2.76 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss yielding the walk-off two run homer in the 11th.
