Myrtle Beach needed extra innings to clinch a playoff berth on Wednesday night while South Bend won a wild one in 10 innings for their 11th walk-off win of the season.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa

Iowa had the day off and host Omaha on Thursday for the start of a four-game series. Drew Rucinski (6-13, 6.07 ERA) gets the start. 3B Jeimer Candelario has a 29-game on-base streak and is hitting .327/.397/.513 with 5 HR and 25 RBI during the stretch.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 6, Jackson (Mariners) 5

Smokies tied the game in the eighth and then won it in the ninth.

Hitting Recap: Chesny Young’s sacrifice fly in the ninth knocked in what proved to be the winning run. 1B Benjamin Carhart (.265) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, took second on a sacrifice bunt by 2B Daniel Lockhart (.205), advanced to third on a single by CF Trey Martin (.195) and scored on Young’s fly ball to left. RF Lane Adams (.296) launched a three-run homer in the top of the third and finished the night 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Smokies tied the game in the eighth on a two-out RBI single from LF Kelly Dugan (.250).

Pitching Chart: RH Michael Wagner (3.38 ERA) worked 6.1 innings, yielding three runs on six hits and two walks. He fanned four and had a game score of 57 in his eighth AA start. Pitching at every full season affiliate this year, the 24-year-old is 3-2 with a 4.07 ERA in 86.1 innings. R.J. Alvarez (7.97 ERA) got charged with a blown save as he allowed two inherited runners to score and the Generals added two more in the seventh. Acquired on waivers from the A’s back in June, Alvarez has struggled, giving up 18 earned runs in 20.1 innings at Tennessee. James Farris 1-3, 3.09 ERA) got the win, retiring all four hitters he faced. 

Smokies News: Brad Markey (7-7, 3.15 ERA) gets the start for the Smokies on Thursday while Paul Blackburn (8-5, 3.23 ERA) faces his former team.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 2, Carolina (Braves) 1

The Pelicans clinched a playoff spot with an extra inning with over the Braves.

Hitting Recap: SS Andrew Ely’s RBI double in the top of the tenth gave the Pelicans the lead for good and clinched their second straight playoff trip as a Cubs affiliate. Pelicans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth when LF Charcer Burks (.245) walked, took second on a wild pitch and beat the throw home on a single from 2B David Bote (.332). Bote and Ely (.251) both finished with two hits as the Pelicans were held to five.

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (3-0, 2.12 ERA) made his fifth start and lasted five innings, allowing one run on six hits and a walk. The right-hander fanned five and threw 75 pitches, 48 for strikes. Game score 58. Erick Leal saw his first action since going on the DL July 21. The right-hander kept the Braves off the board for 2.1 frames, striking out four. Tommy Nance worked a scoreless frame and Daniel Lewis (4-0, 3.28 ERA) got the win with 1.2 innings of relief. 

Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (11-6, 4.10 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night.....Myrtle Beach activated Erick Lealfrom the DL......Pelicans have clinched a playoff spot because Salem won the first half title and Myrtle Beach’s second-half lead over Winston-Salem and Carolina. 

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 11, West Michigan (Tigers) 10

South Bend recorded their 11th walk-off win in a wild one at Four Winds.

Hitting Recap: Cubs scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth as DH Adonis Paula’s shot to center scored Matt Rose with the bases loaded. LF Eloy Jimenez led off the ninth with his 39th double and took third on a single by Rose. RF Eddy Martinez (.260) then double home Jimenez and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Paula ripped a hit to center for the game-winner. SS Andruw Monasterio (.214) never reached second and the Whitecaps threw to second for the force out while the Cubs were celebrating and Paula was not credited with a hit. Cubs held a 9-2 lead only to see West Michigan score in four straight innings and tie the game. Rose (.236) went 3-for-5 with his 12th homer and two RBI while Jimenez slugged his 14th homer and added to his MWL lead total with three RBI (81). 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.326) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored while CF Roberto Caro (.255) collected three hits and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: Rough first inning for Adbert Alzolay as the Whitecaps scored twice on two hits and a walk. After three shutout frames, Alzolay surrendered a three-run homer in the fifth and finished with a line of 5 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. Greyfer Eregua got charged with three runs (one earned) over two innings and Dillon Maples allowed an unearned run in the eighth and tossed a scoreless ninth. Jared Cheek won his first MWL game but the Whitecaps scored a run in the tenth on a walk and a hit.

SB-Cubs News: Justin Steele (5-6, 5.51 ERA) makes his 18th start in the series finale Thursday night.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Everett (Mariners) 1, Eugene 0

Three Aqua Sox pitchers combined to one-hit the Ems. 

Hitting Recap: A single by Trent Giambrone was the only hit of the game. It was the second game of the series that Giambrone got the only hits of the game for Eugene. 

Pitching Chart: Manuel Rondon (6-1, 1.20 ERA) suffered his first loss, allowing a run on five hits and three walks in the 90-pitch outing. Rondon fanned three and had a game score of 46. M.T. Minacci tossed 2.1 scoreless frames. Alex Santana left after only getting one out and issuing two walks in the seventh. Dakota Mekkes worked 1.2 scoreless and Mark Malave pitched the ninth.

Emeralds Notes: Ems have Thursday off.

Arizona Rookie League—Angels 4, Cubs 0

Five Angels pitchers combined for the shutout.

Hitting Recap: CF Luis Ayala (.291) went 4-for-5 with a double as the Cubs were held to six hits in the shutout.

Pitching Chart: Pablo Ochoa (1-6, 6.03 ERA) threw four solid innings, allowing a run on four hits while striking out three. Yapson Gomez (2.55 ERA) fanned three over three innings and Jordan Brink (3.86 ERA) was charged with an unearned run over the final two innings.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 1 (2), Yankees 1 (1)

Cubs scored twice in the top of the seventh and won a in  game shortened to eight innings by rain.

Hitting Recap: 1B Franklin Tineo (IFA13-DR, .239) and 2B Orian Nunez (IFA15-DR, .277) led off the seventh wiht singles and moved up on base on a bunt by 3B Jose Rojas (IFA14-V, .209). C Erick Gonzalez (IFA13-DR, .313) brought a run home with the third single of the inning and a RBI groundout by DH Henderson Perez (IFA15-V, .230) plated the second run. LF Jonathan Sierra (IFA15-DR, .266) was on base three times with a double and two walks.

Pitching Chart: Andres Bonalde (IFA14-V, 2-6, 4.84 ERA) blanked the Yanks for six innings, allowing six hits while fanning three. The left-hander recorded 11 ground ball outs and had a game score of 67. Luis Silva (IFA15-V, 7.02 ERA) earned his first save, allowing a run in the seventh in the only inning he pitched.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (0), D-Backs 2 (0)—Suspended in fourth due to rain

Game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth with the Cubs hitting and a runner on second with one out.

Hitting Recap: Only one hit for the Cubs, a single by SS Aramis Ademan (IFA15-DR, . 254)

Pitching Chart: Hector Garcia (IFA14-M, 1.59 ERA) tossed four scoreless frames before the rains came. He fanned two, allowed two hits and a walk, and recorded six ground ball outs.
