Tennessee extended their win streak to five games while David Bote’s bat helped Myrtle Beach to a victory.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Omaha (Royals) 8, Iowa 1

The Storm Chasers rolled into Des Moines and took the series opener behind a 12-hit attack.

Hitting Recap: Only three hits for Iowa and they scored their only run in the fourth on a RBI double from 3B Jeimer Candelario (.318), who extended his on-base streak to 30 games and finished 2-for-3. In his first rehab game at Iowa, LF Chris Coghlan went 1-for-3 and scored. 

Pitching Chart: Drew Rucinski (6-13, 6.07 ERA) worked seven innings, surrendering four runs on nine hits. He fanned three and had a game score of 55 in the 87-pitch outing. Corey Black got charged with two unearned runs over 1.1 frames and Joe Thatcher allowed two inherited runners to scored and allowed two more to cross home in the ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: No starter has been named for Iowa for Friday night.....OF Chris Coghlan has joined the I-Cubs after going on the 15-day DL on Aug. 17 with a right rib contusion. Traded from Oakland to the North Side in June for Arismendy Alcantara, Coghlan has made two trips to the DL this season for rib injuries and is hitting .222/.377/.333 in 27 games for the Cubs.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 5, Jackson (Mariners) 4—10 innings

Tennessee won its fifth straight on a RBI double by Kelly Dugan in the tenth

Hitting Recap: LF Kelly Dugan (.253) scored DH David Freitas (.294) from first with a double in the tenth to give the Smokies the win. Dugan finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Freitas and RF Lane Adams (.303) both finished with two hits. Smokies battled a familiar face as Paul Blackburn saw his old team for the first time since being traded to the Mariners. The Smokies knocked Blackburn out of the game in the fourth, scoring four times on nine hits. Former battery mate C Benjamin Carhart (.263) smacked a solo homer (5) in the second and added a RBI groundout in the Smokies two-run third.

Pitching Chart: RH Brad Markey (7-7, 3.22 ERA) worked six innings and threw 94 pitches, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks. Game score 44. Stephen Perakslis (1-4, 3.63 ERA) fired three shutout frames and earned the win, yielding two hits and a walk while fanning four. David Berg (6.30 ERA) worked around two hits and two errors in the tenth for his third save.

Smokies News: RH Zach Hedges (3-2, 2.36 ERA) gets the ball on Friday night at Jackson.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 8, Carolina (Braves) 4

David Bote had four hits, including a homer, and knocked in three runs in the win.

Hitting Recap: 2B David Bote (.342) slugged a two-run homer in the seventh and finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. CF Donnie Dewees (.278) knocked in three runs while SS Bryant Flete (.312) had two hits and a RBI. DH Charcer Burks (.245) delivered a RBI double and scored in the three-run second.

Pitching Chart: Jonathan Martinez (12-6, 4.19 ERA) gave up four runs over six innings but earned his 12th win of the season. The right-hander scattered nine hits, walked one and threw 90 pitches, 62 for strikes. LH Tommy Thorpe (3.82 ERA) worked 1.2 scoreless frames and RH Scott Effross (3.24 ERA) got the final four outs.

Pelicans News: Jeremy Null (3-5, 4.79 ERA) takes the mound on Friday night in Wilmington. 

Midwest League—Low A—West Michigan (Tigers) 2, South Bend 1

West Michigan pitching fanned 16 Cubs and scored twice in the second.

Hitting Recap: Cubs scored their only run of the game with three singles in the sixth, the third off the bat of 3B Vimael Machin (.241). DH P.J. Higgins (.273) extended his hit streak to eight games with a single in the eighth. Cubs only extra base hit of the night was a screaming double off the bat of LF Eloy Jimenez (.335), his 40th.

Pitching Chart: Justin Steele (5-7, 5.30 ERA) matched his season-high with six innings but took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits and five walks. The left-hander fanned two, recorded nine ground ball outs and had a game score of 50 in the 91-pitch outing, 53 of strikes. Tanner Griggs (2.28 ERA) returned to the South Bend lineup from the inactive list and tossed three shutout relief frames, fanning three while giving up two hits. Griggs threw 37 pitches, 29 for strikes.

SB-Cubs News: Jose Paulino (2-0, 3.72 ERA) makes his sixth start in the MWL and is coming off his worst outing of the year, allowing six runs over four innings....Activated Tanner Griggs from the inactive list and placed LHP Carson Sands on the inactive list.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene

Eugene had the day off and are back in action on Friday at Salem-Keizer. No starter has been named.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 3, Angels 2

Cubs scored three times in the third and downed the Angels. 

Hitting Recap: C Carlos Diaz (.154) and 2B Edgar Rondon (.253) led off the third with back-to-back doubles and after an out, RF Kwang-Min Kwon (.278) doubled home the tying run. Kwon took third on a single by SS Isaac Paredes (.305) and scored the eventual winning run on a ground out by DH Gustavo Polanco (.329). 1B Kevin Zamudio (.241) and Parades both finished with two hits.

Pitching Chart: RH Matt Swarmer (3.38 ERA) got the start and lasted two innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks. Jose Leidenz (2-0, 6.68 ERA) got credit for the win with four shutout innings. Holden Cammack (3.86 ERA) fanned three in two perfect frames and Luis Aquino (4.88 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save.

Dominican Summer League

The entire league was rained out on Thursday and its unlikely the games will be made up since there’s only two days left in the regular season.
