News, Notes and Game Recaps from Aug. 26

Iowa’s Jeimer Candelario extended his on-base streak to 31 games with three hits, including his ninth AAA homer, as the Cubs downed Omaha. Jeremy Null pitched the Pelicans to a win and Eugene improved to 47-18.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, Omaha (Royals) 5

Jeimer Candelario was a triple shy of the cycle as the Cubs scored four times in the fourth to even the series with Omaha.

Hitting Recap: Jeimer Candelario (.327) went 3-for-3 with two doubles and extended his hit streak to 11 games and on-base streak to 31 straight. The 22-year-old smacked his ninth homer in the second, knocked in three and scored three times. 3B Tommy La Stella (.297) went 2-for-4 and scored once while DH Chris Coghlan (.429) had two hits as he continues his rehab stint. C Tim Federowicz (.291) had two singles and knocked in a pair.

Pitching Chart: Jordan Pries (5.09 ERA) got the start and lasted four innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks. Armando Rivero (5-3, 2.14 ERA) fanned four over two innings and got credit for the win. Pierce Johnson  (6.63 ERA) tossed two scoreless and set four down on strikes. Jose Rosario (2.00 ERA) kept the Storm Chasers off the board for his fourth save. 

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa sends Jake Buchanan (11-8, 4.53 ERA) to the mound on Saturday night......OF Albert Almora is expected to return Iowa this weekend after going on the DL on Aug. 14 with a thumb injury. Almora had the thumb looked at by a specialist and has been cleared to return to the team, per Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register. 

Southern League—AA—Tennessee @ Jackson (Mariners)—Rained Out

Friday night’s game was canceled and will not be made up as the two teams don’t meet again. The Smokies return home on Friday and send Zach Hedges (3-2, 2.36 ERA) to the hill against Birmingham.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 5, Wilmington (Royals) 0

Pelican scored five times in the first and Jeremy Null and two relievers blanked Wilmington in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans did all their damage in the first. LF Charcer Burks (.245) and CF Donnie Dewees (.286) led off the game with back-to-back doubles. Singles by 2B David Bote (.346) and 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.255) scored Dewees and DH Ian Rice (.256) followed with a RBI double. RF Jeffrey Baez (.243) ripped a single to left to score Balaguert and 3B Jesse Hodges (.210) capped off the scoring with sacrifice fly. Dewees, Bote, Balaguert and RIce all finished with two hits.

Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null (4-5, 4.44 ERA) has struggled this year at Myrtle Beach but the 6-foot-7 right-hander turned in his best outing of the year on Friday night, tossing seven shutout innings. He only surrendered two hits and a walk while striking out four in the 93 pitch outing. Game score 80. James Norwood (3.60 ERA) and Ryan McNeil (2.49 ERA) each threw a scoreless frame.

Pelicans News: James Pugliese (5-5, 4.25 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night in Wilmington.

Midwest League—Low A—Great Lakes (Dodgers) 2, South Bend 0

Yadier Alvarez and three Loons relievers blanked the Cubs in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: A double from 1B P.J. Higgins (.273) and singles from 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.320) and SS Andruw Monasterio (.218) was the offense. Higgins extended his hit streak to nine games.

Pitching Chart: Jose Paulino (2-1, 3.34 ERA) tossed six solid innings but took the loss, allowing a run on five hits. The left-hander fanned two, recorded nine ground ball outs and had a game score of 65. John Williamson (2.41 ERA) tossed 1.2 scoreless frames and Jared Cheek (3.65 ERA) gave up an unearned run in the ninth.

SB-Cubs News: Casey Bloomquist (8-7, 2.76 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 6, Salem-Keizer (Giants) 4

Eugene rallied late to take the series opener at Sale-Keizer.

Hitting Recap: Ems grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third as they took advantage of two errors and three wild pitches. 3B Wladimir Galindo (.244) delivered a RBI single while a wild pitch and an error plated the other two runs. Darryl Wilson  (.265) went 3-for-6 and knocked in the tying run in the eighth. SS Zack Short (.260) went 2-for-5 and scored once while Galindo finished with two hits and two RBI.

Pitching Chart: Ems used five pitchers in the win. Pedro Silverio (5.08 ERA) got the start and went four frames, allowing two runs on five hits and a two walks. He fanned three and had a game score of 47. Tyler Peitzmeier (3.18 ERA) gave up two runs in the fifth on three hits and a walk. Marc Huberman (3-0, 0.77 ERA) got credit for the win, tossing two shutout frames while fanning three. Chad Hockin (7.20 ERA) worked a scoreless eighth and Wyatt Short (0.00 ERA) worked around a walk and a hit for his sixth save. Short has not allowed a earned run in 13 innings.

Emeralds Notes: Bryan Hudson (3-4, 4.62 ERA) gets the ball on Friday night at Salem-Keizer.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Cubs have the day off and play their final regular season games against the D-Backs and the last two against the A’s. The Cubs have already qualified for the post-season and are likely to play in the first round of the six-team single elimination format.

Dominican Summer League— Mets 1 (1), Cubs 1 (0)

Two Mets pitcher combined to one-hit the Cubs.

Hitting Recap: A single by LF Jose Jules (.223) in the top of the eighth was the only hi for the Cubs.

Pitching Chart: Jose Mac Donna(5-3, 2.06 ERA) tossed six solid innings and the only run he allowed was unearned. Mac Donna surrendered six hits and fanned five. Edison Novas worked two scoreless frames.

Cubs Notes: Cubs end the season against the Mets on Saturday.

Dominican Summer League— Mariners (2), Cubs 2 (0)

The playoff bound Mariners blanked the Cubs on two hits.

Hitting Recap: Singles by SS Aramis Ademan (.252) and 2B Luis Diaz (.253) was the only offense for the Cubs.

Pitching Chart: Alfredo Colorado (3-7, 3.61 ERA) made his final start of the season and went five innings, yielding two runs on four hits and two walks while fanning four. Wilfre Delgado struckout three over three scoreless and Yan De La Cruz worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

Cubs Notes: Cubs end the season against the M’s on Saturday.
