Clifton named top Carolina League pitcher
Trevor Clifton was named the Carolina League’s Pitcher of the Year on Saturday. Clifton leads the Carolina League with a 2.87 ERA and paces the circuit in WHIP (1.19) and K/9 (9.7). The right-hander is also second in the league in BAA (.229) and he’s posted a 7-7 recorded over a career-high 113 innings. A 12th-round pick in 2013, Clifton was tabbed the Cubs’ Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May and named to the Carolina League All-Star game.
Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, Omaha (Royals) 0
Jake Buchanan and three relievers combined to blank Omaha.
Hitting Recap: Cubs grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run homer from SS Kris Negron (.254). RF John Andreoli (.253) and LF Chris Coghlan (.400) knocked in runs in the fifth. CF Albert Almora (.308) returned to the line-up after going on the DL with a thumb injury on Aug. 14. He went 1-for-4 with a single. 3B Jeimer Candelario (.323) had his 31-game on-base streak snapped as he went 0-for-3. DH Tommy La Stella went 0-for-3.
Pitching Chart: Jake Buchanan (12-8, 4.34 ERA) scattered five hits and two walks over six innings and blanked the Storm Chasers. Buchanan threw 89 pitches, 55 for strikes, and finished with a game score of 65. Jack Leathersich (0.00 ERA) tossed a scoreless seventh and Joe Smith made his first rehab appearance for Iowa, working a 1-2-3 eighth. Gerardo Concepcion (7.62 ERA) pitched the ninth.

Southern League—AA—Birmingham (White Sox) 4, Tennessee 2
Birmingham scored twice in the top of the ninth and beat the Smokies in the series opener and snapped the Smokies five-game win streak.
Hitting Recap: Smokies tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run double from RF Lane Adams (.300). LF Kelly Dugan (.261) was 3-for-4 and 3B Jason Vosler (.238) had two hits and scored once.
Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (2.23 ERA) tossed six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk. The right-hander fanned five and surrendered a solo homer in the 90-pitch outing. Juan Paniagua (3.75 ERA) worked two scoreless frames, striking out two. Nick Sarianides (3-3, 3.68) surrendered a solo homer with one out and then gave up back-to-back singles that plated another run in the ninth.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 7, Wilmington (Royals) 1
Pelicans made it six straight with a 10-hit attack and the right arm of James Pugliese.
Hitting Recap: LF Charcer Burks (.250) led off the game with a homer and finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in. 2B Bryant Flete (.306) added a pair of RBI while 1B David Bote (.344), 3B Jesse Hodges (.212) and RF Daniel Spingola (.230) all had RBI.
Pitching Chart: James Pugliese (6-5, 3.92 ERA) fanned a career-high nine hitters and blanked the Blue Rocks for six innings. The right-hander allowed two hits, walked two and threw 92 pitches. Tommy Thorpe (3.89 ERA) surrendered a solo homer and Daury Torrez (3.84 ERA) tossed two scoreless frames.

Midwest League—Low A—Great Lakes (Dodgers) 7, South Bend 2
Great Lakes beat South Bend for the second straight night.
Pitching Chart: Casey Bloomquist (8-8, 2.95 ERA) fanned six over 5.1 frames but got tagged for six runs on seven hits and a walk. Bloomquist threw 85 pitches and had a game score of 38. Pedro Araujo (1.80 ERA) gave up a run over 2.2 innings and Dillon Maples (3.04 ERA) tossed a scoreless ninth.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 14, Salem-Keizer 9
Eugene came out on top of a slugfest with the Volcanoes.
Hitting Recap: 2B Trent Giambrone (.301) hit his fourth homer and finished the night 2-for-5 with four RBI. 1B Jose Paniagua (.216) smacked a three-run homer in the Ems six-run sixth while SS Yeiler Peguero (.252) was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two knocked in. DH Zack Short (.255) plated a pair while C Tyler Payne (.246) and RF Jose Gonzalez (.136) both collected two hits
Pitching Chart: Bryan Hudson (4-4, 5.53 ERA) gave up three homers and surrendered eight runs on 11 hits and two walks over five innings. The left-hander fanned three and got credit for the win. Michael Rucker(0.00 ERA) gave up an unearned run over two frames and Andin Diaz (4.24 ERA) fanned three over the final two scoreless frames.
Emeralds Notes: Erling Moreno (2-0, 0.45 ERA) makes his fifth start for the Ems.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 6, D-Backs 4
Cubs scored twice in the top of the ninth to down the D-Backs.
Hitting Recap: 2B Jhonny Bethencourt (.222) walked with one out in the ninth and scored on RF Yohan Matos’ single after the catcher missed the throw to the plate. Matos (.228) went to third on the error and scored on a single from SS Edgar Rondon (.268), who finished 2-for-3. 1B Jhonny Pereda (.287) went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a RBI.
Pitching Chart: Brian Matusz struckout the side in the first but allowed a run on two hits in his only inning. Josh Conway gave up a run in the second and Nathan Sweeney (12.46 ERA) tossed a scoreless third. Junior Marte (5.77 ERA) fanned six over three innings, allowing four hits and a walk. Enrique De Los Rio (1-1, 1.98 ERA) got charged with a blown save and earned the win, allowing a run over three innings.
Dominican Summer League— Mets 1 (2), Cubs 1 (0)
Mets blanked the Cubs for the second straight day.
Pitching Chart: Yunior Perez (4.13 ERA) got the start and tossed two shutout frames. Riger Fernandez (2-6, 4.53 ERA) fanned five over four innings but took the loss, surrendering two unearned runs on two hits and a walk. Freddy Tineo (3.76 ERA) worked the final three scoreless frames.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 2 (10), Mariners 2 (1)
Cubs (38-32) closed out the season with a win over the first-place M’s.
Hitting Recap: Cubs clobbered M’s pitching for 14 hits and tallied six runs in the sixth. Ten different Cubs collected hits with DH Abraham Rodriguez (.255) going 2-for-6 with two RBI. CF Fernando Kelli (.240) had two hits, plated two runs and scored twice. RF Luis Ubiera (.200) and C Daniel Diaz (.178) both had two hits and knocked in a run. SS Aramis Ademan (.254) went 1-for-3 with a RBI.
Pitching Chart: Emilio Ferrebus (2-6, 4.25 ERA) closed out the 2016 campaign with two solid starts as he held the M’s to one run over five innings, allowing five hits and a walk while fanning six. Maikel Aguiar (2.82 ERA) earned his second save with four shutout frames. The 19-year-old right-hander coaxed 10 ground ball outs and fanned two.
