News, Notes and Game Recaps from Sept. 2

Eugene made it eight in a row while Iowa and Myrtle Beach posted wins in the season’s final Friday. Ian Happ blasted a pair of homers in the Smokies loss.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 3, Colorado Spring (Brewers) 2

Hitting Recap: Cubs grabbed a 2-0 led in the second when 3B Jeimer Candelario (.327) walked and trotted home on a homer by 2B Juan Perez (.272). The eventual winning run scored in the seventh as RF John Andreoli (.257) led off with a double and came home on a two-bagger from CF Albert Almora (.308).

Pitching Chart: Bullpen day for the I-Cubs. Joe Thatcher (4.57 ERA) worked around in a hit and a walk in the first while Miguel Mejia (5.70 ERA) retired all six hitters he faced, striking out three. Pierce Johnson (4-6, 6.14 ERA) tossed three scoreless frames, issuing just a walk and fanning three to earn the win. Brian Matusz (3.38 ERA) added two scoreless frames and Jose Rosario (3.10 ERA) got credit for his fifth save, despite allowing two runs on four hits.

I-Cubs Notes: Josh Collmenter (0-0, 1.96 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night.

Southern League—AA—Montgomery (Rays) 10, Tennessee 5

Ian Happ smacked a pair of homers but it wasn’t enough as the Biscuits scored nine unanswered runs.

Hitting Recap: CF Ian Happ went 3-for-4 and knocked in three runs with two homers (8). 1B Benjamin Carhart slugged a solo homer and C Gioskar Amaya (.178) went 2-for-3. SS Chesny Young (.301) went 0-for-5 but still holds a one-point lead in the batting race. 

Pitching Chart: Rough outing for Jen-Ho Tseng (6-8, 4.29 ERA) as the right-hander allowed seven runs on 11 hits and a walk. R.J. Alvarez (7.71 ERA) gave up two runs over two frames and David Berg (6.00 ERA) got charged with an unearned in the eighth.

Smokies News: Tyler Skulina (4-12, 5.39 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 2, Potomac (Nationals) 1

Pelicans took the series opener at Potomac.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans tied the game in the sixth on a RBI single from SS Andrew Ely (.247) after a pair of walks. C Ian Rice (.250) doubled with one out in the eighth and scored the winning run after an error by the first baseman. Only four hits for Myrtle Beach.

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood threw 74 pitches, 42 for strikes, allowing a run on three hits. He fanned two and had a game score of 61. Pelicans bullpen tossed 4.1 scoreless frames. James Norwood (1-0, 2.45 ERA) earned his first CL win, working 2.1 frames. Daury Torrez (3.66 ERA) worked the eighth and Ryan McNeil (2.39 ERA) fanned two in the ninth for his 22nd save.

Pelicans News: Erick Leal (10-4, 2.98 ERA) takes the hill on Saturday night.....Myrtle Beach is 31-8 over their last 39 games.

Midwest League—Low A—West Michigan (Tigers) 3, South Bend 0

Two West Michigan hurlers combined for 13 strikeouts and blanked the Cubs. 

Hitting Recap: 1B Matt Rose (.239) went 3-for-4 while P.J. Higgins (.279) added two singles. 

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay (4.34 ERA) blanked the Whitecaps for for five frames, issuing three hits while fanning three. Tanner Griggs (2-2, 2.86 ERA) surrendered three runs over two frames on four hits and a walk. Mark Malave (0.00 ERA) pitched the eighth.

SB-Cubs News: Casey Bloomquist (8-8, 2.95 ERA) takes the hill on Saturday night.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 9, Tri-City (Padres) 3

Ems scored three times in the first and won their eighth straight.

Hitting Recap: Ems had nine hits, all singles, with Darryl Wilson (.262) going 3-for-5 with a RBI, two runs scored and stole his 21st base. 2B Yeiler Peguero (.264) and RF Robert Garcia (.294) both had two hits and a RBI. C Tyler Payne (.258) was 1-for-3 with three drive in.

Pitching Chart: Bryan Hudson (5-4, 5.06 ERA) bounced back after a pair of rough outings, blanking the Dust Devils over five frames. The left-hander fanned seven and allowed two hits in the 66-pitch outing. Alex Santana (6.23 ERA) allowed a run over two frames and M.T. Minacci (3.98 ERA) surrendered a pair of runs over the final two innings.

Emeralds Notes: Erling Moreno (2-0, 0.72 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night in HIllsboro.
