News, Notes and Game Recaps from Sept. 5

Tennessee’s Chesny Young finished second in the Southern League batting race, Iowa ended the year with a sweep in front of the home crowd, South Bend blanked Dayton, and Dylan Cease set a career-high in strikeouts on the final day of the minor league regular season.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 12, Colorado Springs (Brewers) 3

Iowa completed the sweep and ended the season with four straight wins.

Hitting Recap: Cubs collected 16 hits as 1B Tim Federowicz (.293) went 3-for-5 with two knocked in and RF Juan Perez (.276) had three hits and added three RBI. 3B Jeimer Candelario (.333), C Taylor Davis (.251), and 2B Kris Negron (.256) all had two hits and two RBI. 

Pitching Chart: RH Jordan Pries (7-3, 4.67 ERA) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk over six innings and got credit for the win. LH Jack Leathersich (0.00 ERA) worked around two walks by striking out the side in the seventh. LH Joe Thatcher (4.43 ERA) retired the only hitter he faced and LH Gerardo Concepcion (7.29 ERA) got the final two outs of the eight. RH Jose Rosario (2.95 ERA) tossed a scoreless ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: Look for OF Albert Almora, 3B Jeimer Candelario and RHP Spencer Patton to join the Cubs on their current road trip. All three are already on the 40-man roster. Also on the 40-man are LHP Gerardo Concepcion, RH Pierce Johnson, LH Giovanni Soto and IF Munenori Kawasaki.

Southern League—AA—Montgomery (Rays) 6, Tennessee 2

Smokies dropped the season finale to the Biscuits.

Hitting Recap: DH Chesny Young went 1-for-2 and it assumed he had won the the Southern League batting title  with a .303 average. However, Braves prospect Ozzie Albies was given the title even through he was seven plate approaches short of qualifying for the title. By rule, an 0-for-7 was added to his total and declared the winner with a .315 average. Smokies were blanked the first eight frames and scored twice in the ninth on a throwing error and  a RBI single from RF Kelly Dugan (.266), who finished 2-for-3.

Pitching Chart: Making his second AA start, RH Jonathan Martinez (1-1, 5.25 ERA) blanked the Biscuits for four innings but gave up three runs in the fifth and finished with a line of 7 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. David Berg (6.07 ERA) allowed two runs in the eighth.

Carolina League—High A—Potomac (Nationals) 3, Myrtle Beach 1

Potomac blanked the Pelicans for eight frames and took the season finale.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans only run scored in the ninth on a RBI single from SS Andrew Ely (.237), scoring 2B Bryant Flete (.285), who reached on an error. RF Daniel Spingola (.231) doubled while CF Jeffrey Baez (.241) and LF Charcer Burks (.247) added singles as the Pelicans were held to four hits.

Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null (5-6, 4.20 ERA) only threw three innings, surrendering a run on six hits. He fanned one in the 50-pitch outing. Craig Brooks (8.25 ERA) gave up two runs in the fifth and fanned five in two innings of work, hit first game since coming off the DL. James Norwood (1.93 ERA) blanked the P-Nats for two frames and Scott Effross (5.25 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 eighth. 

Pelicans News: Myrtle Beach hosts Game 1 of the Carolina League Southern Division playoffs against Salem on Wednesday with a 6:05 p.m. local start. The final two games of the best-of-three series will be held in Salem.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 3, Dayton (Reds) 0

South Bend ended the regular season at 84-55 as three pitchers combined to blank the Dragons.

Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI back-to-back doubles by 3B Adonis Paula (.204) and C Tyler Alamo (.243). CF Connor Myers (.221) launched his third homer in South Bend in the third. DH Eloy Jimenez (.329) was 0-for-3 in his first game since Aug. 27.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (9-7, 3.03 ERA) fanned six over six shutout frames and limited the Dragons to five hits. Tanner Griggs (2.67 ERA) struckout three in two scoreless innings and Mark Malave pitched the ninth for his first MWL save.

SB-Cubs News: South Bend opens the best-of-three first round playoffs at West Michigan on Wednesday night with a 6:35 p.m. local start. The final two games of the series will be at Four Winds Field in South Bend.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Hillsboro (D-Backs) 6, Eugene 1

Hillsboro completed the regular season-ending series sweep against Eugene.

Hitting Recap: Only two hits for the Ems—singles from 1B Trent Giambrone (.292) and DH Marcus Mastrobuoni (.227). Eugene took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Wladimir Galindo (.243) walked with two outs, advanced to third on Giambrone’s single and scored on a balk. 

Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease (2.22 ERA) had his best outing of the season, limiting the Hops to one hit over five innings while striking out 10, a new career-high. The hard-throwing right-hander threw 71 pitches, 52 for strikes, didn’t issue a walk, recorded six ground ball outs and had a game score of 78. Alex Santana (3-1, 7.57 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss, allowing five runs on two homers over 1.1 frames. M.T. Minacci (4.03 ERA) gave up a run over the final 1.2 frames.

Emeralds Notes: Eugene (54-22) opens the best-of-three first-round series at Hillsboro on Wednesday night with a 7:05 p.m. local start. The final two games of the series are at PK Park in Eugene.
