Carolina League Playoffs—Myrtle Beach 8, Salem 1
Myrtle Beach scored six times in the third and took the first game of the best-of-three series.
Hitting Recap: The Pelicans sent 12 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the third and chased the Red Sox’s top pitching prospect, scoring six runs. CF Donnie Dewees led off with a walk, took second on a wild pitch and scored on 3B David Bote’s single to center. Two more wild pitches sent Bote to third and 2B Bryant Flete scored him on a single to right. RF Jeffrey Baez added a RBI single and chased Salem’s Michael Kopeck. SS Andrew Ely greeted the new pitcher with a RBI double and LF Charcer Burks added another run-scoring single. Dewees plated the final run of the frames with a single to left. Myrtle Beach grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Burks was hit by a pitch, stolen second, advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on Bote’s single. Baez smacked a solo homer in the fourth for an 8-0 lead.
Pitching Chart: Carolina League Pitcher of the Year Trevor Clifton lived up to the billing, blanking the Red Sox for the first five frames before yielding a run in the sixth. The right-hander fanned six in the 82-pitch outing and had a game score of 67. RH Tommy Nance fanned three in two shutout relief innings and RH Scott Effross set two down on strikes in a scoreless ninth.

Midwest League Playoffs—West Michigan 3, South Bend 2
A two-out single in the bottom of the 11th gave West Michigan the win.
Hitting Recap: South Bend grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on three straight singles by RF Eddy Martinez, SS Isaac Paredes and DH Alberto Mineo. They regained the lead in the fifth when Connor Myers singled, advanced to third on a pair of ground outs and scored on a wild pitch. Cubs had plenty of chances but were just 1-for-11 with RISP and stranded 10. Martinez finished 2-for-5.
Pitching Chart: RH Oscar De La Cruz fanned seven over six innings but allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits. He threw 90 pitches, 67 for strikes, and had a game score of 61. LH John Williamson got the first two outs of the seventh and RH Pedro Araujo got the final out and tossed two more shutout frames. RH Jared Cheek worked around a single and a walk in the tenth but didn’t survive the 11th. David Gonzalez led off with an infield single and took second on Paredes second throwing error of the game. He advanced to third on a balk, and after a ground out and a strikeout, scored on a single by Jose Zambrano.
SB-Cubs News: Cubs look to even the series on Thursday night at Four Winds Field and are expected to send Jose Paulino to the mound......1B/3B Matt Rose was named the Midwest League’s Player of the Month for August. The Cubs 11th round pick in 2015 led the league in extra base hits (15) and homers (7) and was second in runs (19) and RBI (22). In 27 games he hit .291/.362/.573.
Northwest League Playoffs—HIllsboro 4, Eugene 3
A single in the bottom of the 10th gave Hillsboro the walk-off win in the opening game of the best-of-three series.
Hitting Recap: Eugene tied the game in the third on a solo homer by RF Robert Garcia, his third of the season. They grabbed a 2-1 lead the following frame when 3B Wladimir Galindo walked and scored on a double from SS Zack Short. With the game tied at 2-2 in the fifth, LF Kevonte Mitchell led off with a single, stole second and came home on a single by 2B Yeiler Peguero. Ems were held to five hits, two from Short.
Pitching Chart: LH Manuel Rondon got the start and gave up two runs over five innings on four hits and a season-high four walks. He fanned two and one of the hits left the park for a game score of 44. RH Michael Knighton fired two scoreless relief innings and RH Dakota Mekkes got charged with a blown save, allowing an unearned run in the eighth on passed ball by C Tyler Payne. In the 10th, RH Michael Rucker surrendered a one-out double and after another strikeout and an intentional walk, allowed the game winning single.
Emeralds Notes: According to the Eugene website, Pedro Silverio (3-2, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to pitch Game 2 at PK Park on Thursday night. However, some reports have LH Bryan Hudson (5-4, 5.06 ERA) getting the ball.
