A look at Cubs news and prospects playing in Winter Leagues

Gerardo Concepcion tossed a pair of scoreless relief innings in the Venezuelan Winter League on Thursday. Eloy Jimenez making noise in the AFL and the Cubs get ready for the Dodgers.

Cubs News

Jon Lester was named the Game 1 starter for Saturday night against the Dodgers, 4-3 winners over the Nationals in their Game 5 winner-take-all on Thursday night. Kyle Hendricks is expected to go in Game 2 after getting hit by a line drive in his last start against the Giants in Game 2 of the NLDS. The best-of-seven series will be played in the two oldest NL parks.

Arizona Fall League

Eloy Jimenez got the start at DH and was 0-for-4 with a walk in the Solar Sox 7-5 win over Salt River. He was the only Cub that played. Look for the 19-year-old to get a lot of publicity in the AFL because 1) a lot of scouts are seeing him for the first time; 2) He’s really, really good at several aspects of the game.

Venezuelan Winter League

LH Gerardo Concepcion fired a pair of scoreless relief innings and fanned three in Magallanes’ 4-3 loss to Zulia. 2B Bryant Flete had two singles, drew two walks and scored once for the winners......2B Gioskar Amaya had two hits, including a double, and knocked in a run in Aragua’s 7-5 loss to Margarita.

Dominican Winter League

OF Juan Perez (Iowa) is the only Cub position player returning to the DWL. Pitching last year in the DWL included Andury Acevedo, Juan Paniagua, Felix Pena and Starling Peralta

Mexican Pacific Winter League

3B Christian Villanueva (.429) singled and walked is Obregon’s 4-2 loss to Hermosillo. Villanueva’s days as a Cub may be numbered as he’s currently listed on the Cubs 60-day DL and is out of options. 

Puerto Rican Winter League

Among the Cubs prospects playing last year in Puerto Rico were Javier Baez, Fernando Cruz and Miguel Mejia. The season begins on Oct. 27.
