Rosario added to 40-man roster
Right-handed reliever Jose Rosario was added to the Cubs 40-man roster of Monday. Rosario would have become a free agent as a six-year minor league veteran. Signed by the Cubs in April of 2008 out of the Dominican Republic, Rosario has made the slow rise through the Cubs system and missed the 2015 season with Tommy John surgery. In his return in 2016, Rosario was throwing his fastball in the upper 90s and finished the year in AAA Iowa (22 G, 1-2, 2.95 ERA, 5 SV, 21.1 IP, ). He is the cousin to Cubs third base prospect Jeimer Candelario. Rosario elected for free agency in 2015 and resigned with the Cubs for the 2016 season.
In other roster moves, the Cubs activated 3B Christian Villanueva, RHP Aaron Brooks, RHP Conor Mullee and LHP Zac Rosscup from the 60-day DL and are part of the 40-man roster. RHP Dallas Beeler, C Tim Federowicz and RHP Andury Acevedo were all outrighted to AAA Iowa. With the retirement of David Ross, the Cubs roster is at 40 players.
Cubs give qualifying offer to Fowler
The Chicago Cubs extended a qualifying offer to free agent Dexter Fowler. If he accepts, Fowler will receive $17.2 million for the 2017 season. He has a week to decide and if choses free agency, the Cubs would receive a first-round pick as compensation if he signs with another team. The Cubs leadoff hitter during the championship season, Fowler hit .276/.393/.447 with 13 homers and 84 runs scored in 125 games. Free agents not given qualifying offers were LHP Travis Wood, RHP Joe Smith, RHP Trevor Cahill, OF Chris Coghlan and IF Munenori Kawasaki.
